Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

I think I

I think I finally know which college I want to get into! I know, it's a bit early, but I've been looking through colleges for about four months, and I had been having no luck! But then I was looking at an article about John Mayer, and it said that he'd been a dropout at Berklee College in Boston. So I Googled Berklee, and looked at their site, and it looks totally awesome! But wow, it'll take a lot of talent for me to get in!

So, I've decided to post a couple questions about college (I'm into questionnaires, if you haven't noticed. I like finding out people's opinions).

1-What college do you want to get into, if you've decided, and why?

2-Have any of your friends/acquaintances gotten into any famous colleges, and if so, how?

3-Do you even want to go to college at all?

4-What subjects do you want to study?

5-What do you want to major/minor in?

My answers

1-As I said above, Berklee, because it seems like a very nice school, and it's all about contemporary music, not classical like Juilliard.

2-Yes, my former ballet teacher, H, got a full scholarship to STANFORD. I'm not sure how, but she's just that smart. =) Her picture actually got posted on the website when she attended a football game. I saw it, and her face was all covered in face paint. XD It was SO funny.

3-Yes, I do. I didn't used to, because, as I thought, it's just another four years of school! Yes, it is, but if I don't get into college, then I probably won't ever get to follow my dream of being a really good musician. So, I'm going to college, ha ha!

4-Well, I was looking at the courses Berklee offers, and several looked interesting: Songwriting, Composition, Contemporary Writing and Production, Performance, and Professional Music

5-Probably major in Songwriting and/or Professional Music, minor in any of the other three (four), maybe a combination of them.

So, I'm not really going to answer your questions outright here, since I don't really have answers, but here are my college ramblings:

I have no idea where I want to go to college at this point in time, though I have been actively looking into colleges.  I've toured the campuses of Haverford (near Philly), Oberlin, St. Olaf (my friend is going there), and Ithaca College.  I'm leaning at this point towards a small, private, liberal arts college and less toward big university.  I don't want to go to school in California FOR SURE so no USC, UCLA or any UC schools.  (I live in CA and I sorta want to go somewhere else and get out of there for college...)  And I like small schools (though I've never actually been in a big school).  I just love the community of small schools.  My friend is going to Reed currently and she was telling me how much she feels at home there.  She knows so many people there and she really feels a connection to all of them.  I want to feel a strong connection with my fellow classmates and not an overwhelming sense of people, if you know what I mean.

Has anyone heard of St. John?  If so, what's your opinion?  I heard about it from a magazine and was very intrigued.  Everyone who goes there studies the classics and learns things and they were figured out originally, not as facts of life.  So, for example, repeating early experiments of early scientists to figure something out.  And the whole school does everything the same so everyone is on the same page.  There are many discussions and debates about the classics and it just sound like a very interesting environment.

Okay, major/minor deals.  I want to do something with music, whether I just play in an orchestra on campus and not major in music or doing something big.  I know I don't really want to major in solo performance because I don't want to be a solo performer. :)  If I do end up performing, I'd want to be in chamber music.  (I play violin and piano for those who are wondering.)  It could be fun to major in something else music, but I'm not sure that's what I want to do with my life.  I also want to have writing be part of my life.  I love to write and have taken many (like... 3-ish?) writing courses.  I really enjoy it.  Those are my interests currently, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to go into science, though you never know.  My dad wanted to go into cinematography and ended up getting a PHD in biology.  So we'll just see.

Wow, so you're not even quite sure what you want to do for college! I've only recently decided, and I guess Cornish is my second choice, but I'm not sure, you know?

3-Do you even want to go to college at all? Yes!

4-What subjects do you want to study? I don't really know what's available to take...

5-What do you want to major/minor in? I want to major in biology, definitely.

1-What college do you want to get into, if you've decided, and why?

Whitman! It has an awesome curriculum and a really good theatre program and it's in Washington and focused on academics and it's small (~3,000) and the campus is well-maintained and nice looking and- and- basically it's wonderful. Plus it has a huge Christian group.

2-Have any of your friends/acquaintances gotten into any famous colleges, and if so, how?

Well, Alison's at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, not really sure how famous it is as it's mainly a geek school, and she's there because, of the three colleges she applied to, it was (a) her top choice and (b) the only one that accepted her.

3-Do you even want to go to college at all?

Of course.

4-What subjects do you want to study?

Um. Everything. I don't know, I can't decide, but at the moment I'm planning on a theatre major. The freshman Encounters program is so epic though.

5-What do you want to major/minor in?

Er... see 4. Theatre major, and as for the minor my current top choices are English, economics, and music.

Of course, 4 and 5 are highly subject to change-- Joshua, the admissions officer for my region, started off as a physics major and ended up graduating with a major in religion, of all things. So who knows.

@Leaf: haha, I've been getting tons of stuff from St. John's and St. Olaf's and Reed, and I visited Reed recently (nuclear power plant?! On campus?! THAT IS SO AWESOME.) In fact I'm probably not going to any of them (if I don't get into Whitman, I go to Gutenberg. The odds that I don't get into Gutenberg [which is so small it pretty much can't afford to be exclusive-- 50 students] are as close to zero as makes no difference), but still.

Gutenberg has more or less the same curriculum as St. Johns, actually, but it's smaller (50 students, as I said) and Christian. It's in Eugene, Oregon, and it's really quite amazing. If you're interested in St. Johns, definitely look into Gutenberg too. It has great dorms, and a pretty lawn/backyard (one building, not an actual campus, you see), and it's right next to the U of O and so you could very easily take traditional classes in addition to the MASSIVE AMOUNTS of reading you will be doing. Plus, the best part? Tuition is only ~$17,000, and they supply all the books. ((The only reason it's my fall-back and not my first choice is that Whitman's Harper Joy Theatre is rated in the top 20 college theatres in the nation.))

Also, there's a book called Colleges that Change Lives which I would highly recommend.

...

Also also, college apps are the BANE OF MY EXISTENCE.

1-What college do you want to get into, if you've decided, and why?

Harvard because it's Harvard and it's right here in MA.

2-Have any of your friends/acquaintances gotten into any famous colleges, and if so, how?

I don't think so.

3-Do you even want to go to college at all?

Yes

4-What subjects do you want to study?

I want to avoid math.  I know that.

5-What do you want to major/minor in?

Probably literature or creative writing if those are real majors.

I think literature is a legit major, not sure though... Harvard is cool!!!! You can be like Elle Woods. =)

My mum and dad are both English majors, which I think is basically the same thing. And I'm fairly certain that there are colleges that offer Creative Writing courses. Also, Analesia, I don't want to crush any hopes and dreams or anything, but I wouldn't have my heart set on Harvard if I were you. It's incredibly incredibly hard to get into.

Also, trust me, a lot of the reason you hate math is that you're either in sixth or seventh grade (I don't know which). Everybody hates middle school math. People who grow up to become math majors and teach geometry hate middle school math. I hated middle school math. That's because you're in a slog of boredom and review - and that's if you have a good teacher. Just hang in there till geometry, because geometry is a blast.

Well, speaking as someone who is currently taking geometry...I enjoyed the algebra courses I took after middle school math (as you put it) much more. However, that is probably a matter of opinion, and partially due to the fact that I wholeheartedly dislike proofs. :)

I haven't had Algebra yet, but I'm in Geometry now, and I think it's fun because I love proofs. At any rate, you have to admit it's better than middle school math.

Yeah, I know Harvard is unreachable.  But I have never gotten less than an A, not even an A-, so I'm hopeful.  And I'm in 7th grade.

Yeah, I did some research yesterday and  you can get a degree in English/Literature.  I'm going to get an Accociate's Degree in English Creative Writing.  Not sure where yet though, you can't get an Assosiate's in English in Colorado, but I don't want to go far from home.

1-What college do you want to get into, if you've decided, and why? No idea. :) Probably just a state school, because it's what we can afford.

2-Have any of your friends/acquaintances gotten into any famous colleges, and if so, how? My friend went to Julliard.  And why?  Because he's an amazing singer and musician.

3-Do you even want to go to college at all?  Yeah, I guess, but it's not what I'm gonna spend high school obsessing about.  I just wanna go somewhere I can learn to start my career or whatever.  Or somewhere that has a good cafeteria.  That'd be cool too.

4-What subjects do you want to study? Not really sure...  Stuff like writing (creative writing I guess.  I don't know the fancy names for subjects...), music, art, photography, cooking, etc.

5-What do you want to major/minor in? All I know is that at the moment I'd like to major in some sort of cooking and minor in photography, but my plans will probably change soon.:)
