Well... You post lyrics, to songs, possibly fragments of lyrics if the songs are too long. It's all good fun.

Happy/Sad from The Addams Family

by Andrew Lippa

Right and wrong, who's to say which we should refuse?

All we know, love survives either way we choose.

Here you are at the edge, go ahead and fall.

Don't resist; I insist love still conquers all.

I'm feeling happy, I'm feeling sad.

A little childish, a little dad.

I think of all the days you've known.

All the ways you've grown.

See you on your own, and then

I'm feeling happy and sad again.

I think I'm rested, but then I'm tired.

Today requested, tomorrow fired.

And now a boy says he adores

She who once was yours.

How can I ignore such news?

I'm sad and happy, why should I choose?

Life is full of contradictions, every inch a mile.

And the moment we start weeping

That's when we should smile.

In every Heaven, you'll find some Hell.

And there's a welcome in each farewell.

Life can be harsh, the future strict

Who would dare predict?

And the boy you've picked, not bad.

So let's be happy

Forever happy

Completely happy...

And a tiny bit sad

I seriously love Nathan Lane. Seriously. And the Addams Family. And this song.

No, it isn't. I agree, though!

@ Leaf: I feel exactly the same way. I don't really like the way the video sounds very much, but I absolutely love the lyrics and the animal. Actually, I don't think it was even the same person making the lyrics and the video...

Oh, and I forgot that the admins want us to add the artist who wrote/performed the song. The lyrics writer was Mal Webb. I'm not sure who made the video; someone in America, I think...

Ahem.  I know this probably isn't the kind of lyrics TNÖ intended, but whatever, they're lyrics.

from Ruddigore, or The Witch's Curse.  Lyrics by W.S. Gilbert.  Music by Sir Arthur Sullivan.

Bridesmaids.
Hail the Bride of seventeen summers:
In fair phrases
Hymn her praises;
Lift your song on high, all comers.
She rejoices
In your voices.
Smiling summer beams upon her,
Shedding every blessing on her:
Maidens greet her –
Kindly treat her –
You may all be brides some day!
Bucks & Blades.
Hail the bridegroom who advances,
Agitated,
Yet elated.
He's in easy circumstances,
Young and lusty,
True and trusty.
All.
Smiling summer beams upon her,
Shedding every blessing on her:
Maidens greet her –
Kindly treat her –
You may all, may all be brides some day!

(Background to following section:  Robin Oakapple is actually Ruthven Murgatroyd, the heir to the Baronetage of Ruddigore.  These baronets are cursed to do a bad deed every day, so Ruthven ran away from home and disguised himself.  Now he's found out.)

Robin & Chorus.
When I'm/he's a bad Bart. I/he will tell taradiddles!
On very false fiddles I'll/he'll play a bad part!
I'll/He'll play a bad part on the falsest of fiddles.
And tell taradiddles when I'm/he's a bad Bart.
Chorus.
When he's a bad Bart. he will tell taradiddles!
On very false fiddles he'll play a bad part!
He'll play a bad part on the falsest of fiddles.
And tell taradiddles when I'm/he's a bad Bart.

(Spoken/sung by Ruthven's foster brother Richard, this I think is one of Gilbert's funniest lines EVER.)

Within this breast there beats a heart
Whose voice can't be gainsaid.
It bade me thy true rank impart,
And I at once obeyed.
I knew 'twould blight thy budding fate –
I knew 'twould cause thee anguish great –
But did I therefore hesitate?
No! I at once obeyed!

(A chorus of ghosts visits Ruthven later in the operetta because his bad deeds aren't bad enough.)

Sir Roderic.
When the night wind howls in the chimney cowls, and the bat in the moonlight flies,
And inky clouds, like funeral shrouds, sail over the midnight skies –
When the footpads quail at the night-bird's wail, and black dogs bay at the moon,
Then is the spectres' holiday – then is the ghosts' high-noon!

...

As the sob of the breeze sweeps over the trees, and the mists lie low on the fen,
From grey tomb-stones are gathered the bones that once were women and men,
And away they go, with a mop and a mow, to the revel that ends too soon,
For cockcrow limits our holiday – the dead of the night's high-noon!

...

And then each ghost with his ladye-toast to their churchyard beds takes flight,
With a kiss, perhaps, on her lantern chaps, and a grisly grim "good-night";
Till the welcome knell of the midnight bell rings forth its jolliest tune,
And ushers in our next high holiday – the dead of the night's high-noon!

(Mad Margaret, a lovesick woman, laments her fate.)

To a garden full of posies
Cometh one to gather flowers,
And he wanders through its bowers
Toying with the wanton roses,
The wanton roses,
Who, uprising from their beds,
Hold on high their shameless heads
With their pretty lips a-pouting,
With their pretty lips a-pouting,
Never doubting – never doubting
That for Cytherean posies
He would gather aught but roses!

In a nest of weeds and nettles
Lay a violet, half-hidden,
Hoping that his glance unbidden
Yet might fall upon her petals,
Upon her petals.
Though she lived alone, apart,
Hope lay nestling at her heart,
But, alas, the cruel awaking,
But, alas, the cruel awaking
Set her little heart a-breaking,
For he gathered for his posies
Only roses – only roses!

Ahhh, Ruddigore is my favorite now and forever.

JOE
So we'll do a new show,
So you'll meet a new dame,
So you'll take some time for personal pleasure.

CHARLEY
There gotta be endings
Or there wouldn't be beginnings —
Right?

LES
You got talent to blow
And you're making a name
And that song you wrote's a national treasure.

TED, JEROME
You're looking at losses
When you should be counting winnings —

JOE, LES, CHARLEY, TED
Right!

CHARLEY
Best thing that ever could have happened —

FRANK
Right.

ALEX
So you'll get a new flat
And you'll have a few things,
Start a whole new life and learn to adore it —

KATE
If you want to have weddings,
Then you gotta have divorces —
No?

TERRY
Though it's sad and all that,
You get over these things,
And you come out somehow better for it —

JEROME
Just because you change horses
Doesn't mean you're changing courses —

ALL
(except Mary)
Right!

JEROME
Best thing that ever could have happened,
I say best thing that ever could have happened — !

TERRY
Best thing that ever could have happened — !

ALEX
One more thing not to think about —

TED
It was all getting much to complicated —

FRANK
Right!

MARY
All right, now you know:
Life is crummy.
Well, now you know.

I mean, big surprise:
People love you and tell you lies.
Bricks can fall out of clear blue skies.
Put your dimple down,
Now you know.

Okay, there you go —
Learn to live with it,
Now you know.

It's called flowers wilt,
It's called apples rot,
It's called theives get rich and saints get shot,
Okay, now you know.

Okay, now you know,
Now forget it.
Don't fall apart at the seams.
It's called letting go your illusions,
And don't confuse them with dreams.

Yes sir, quite a blow —
Don't regret it,
And don't let's go to extremes.
It's called what's your choice?
It's called count to ten.
It's called burn your bridges, start again.
You should burn them every now and then
Or you'll never grow!

Because now you grow.
That's the killer, is
Now you grow.

You're right, nothing's fair,
And it's all a plot,
And tomorrow doesn't look so hot —
Right, you better look at what you've got:
Over here, hello?
Okay, now you know,
Right?

TERRY
It's a month at most —

LES
Sure, you'll spin a few wheels —

ALEX
But you don't look back —

KATE
Just leave all the pieces.

GROUP I
When you haven't got one choice,
Might as well enjoy the other.

GROUP II
Right!

TERRY
You'll come out to the coast —

JEROME
We can set a few deals,
And I'm talking strictly major releases.

GROUP II
An exit from one place
Is an entrance to another.

GROUP I
Right!

CHARLEY
Best thing that ever could have —

MARY
I mean, socks have holes,
I mean, roads have bumps,
They make meatheads champs and nice guys chumps —

CHARLEY
— Happened!

MARY
I mean, even cream of wheat has lumps —

ALL
(variously, overlapping)
Best thing that ever could have happened! …
It was all getting much to complicated anyhow …
Best thing that ever could have happened!

FRANK
(to Joe)
Right, we'll do a new show —
(to Charley)
No, we'll do a whole batch! —
(to Mary)
And it's over with, I'll cut the connection —
Gotta have endings,
Or there wouldn't be beginnings.

ALL
Right!

CHARLEY
When you're flattened this low
And you're starting from scratch,
You can only go in one direction!

ALL
The side is retired,
But there still are lots of innings,
Right?

GROUP I
Best thing that ever could have happened!
Best thing that ever could have happened!
I say, best thing that ever could have happened,
I say, best thing that ever could have happened!
It's your time, your time!

GROUP II (overlapping)

Yesterday is done!
See the pretty countryside!
Soon enough you're merrily, merily
Rolling along!
Rolling along!

GROUP III (overlapping)
You're beginning again,
Got another clean slate,
Got a whole new life,
You'll learn to adore it!
It's your time!
It's your time!

ALL
Now you know!

What's your choice?
It's called count to ten.
It's called burn your bridges, start again.
You should burn them every now and then
Or you'll never know!

And tomorrow doesn't look so hot —

ALL
Right, you better look at what you've got:
Over here, hello?
Over here, hello?

MARY, CHARLEY, JOE
Over here, hello?

ALL
Now you know!
Right!

@Christina: No, Leaf isn't my real name, as Ima said.  That would be rather cool though... :)

@Ima: Okay, that makes sense.  I went back and looked at the video which said it was a parody, so it's all good. :)  I proceeded to look him up and saw one of his videos during a life show, and oh my goodness, he is talented!  If you look up Mal Webb on YouTube, the first video that comes up is the one I found, something about sampling beat box.  It's hard to believe that he's actually making all those noises.

Now for another song.  This is "My Eyes," from Dr. Horrible.  Music by Jed Whedon.  Lyrics by Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon, and Joss Whedon.  Performed by Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day.

HORRIBLE

Any dolt with half a brain

Can see that humankind has gone insane

To the point where I don’t know

If I’ll upset the status quo

If I throw poison in the water main

Listen close to everybody’s heart

And hear that breaking sound

Hopes and dreams are shattering apart

And crashing to the ground

I cannot believe my eyes

How the world’s filled with filth and lies

But it’s plain to see

Evil inside of me is on the rise

PENNY

Look around

We’re living with the lost and found

Just when you feel you’ve almost drowned

You find yourself on solid ground

And you believe

There’s good in everybody’s heart

Keep it safe and sound

With hope, you can do your part

To turn a life around

I cannot believe my eyes

Is the world finally growing wise

‘Cause it seems to me

Some kind of harmony

Is on the rise

HORRIBLE (overlapping with Penny below)

Anyone with half a brain

Could spend their whole life howling in pain

‘Cause the dark is everywhere

And Penny doesn’t seem to care

That soon the dark in me is all that will remain

Listen close to everybody’s heart

And hear that breaking sound

Hopes and dreams are shattering apart

And crashing to the ground

I cannot believe my eyes

How the world’s filled with filth and lies

But it’s plain to see

Evil inside of me is on the rise

PENNY

Take it slow

He looks at me and seems to know

The things that I’m afraid to show

And suddenly I feel this glow

And I believe

There’s good in everybody’s heart

Keep it safe and sound

With hope, you can do your part

To turn a life around

I cannot believe my eyes

How the world’s finally growing wise

And it’s plain to see

Rapture inside of me is on the rise

Let's not die just yet, thread.

***

Here's a little story that should make you cry,
About two unhappy dames.
Let us call them Lucy X and Jessie Y,
Which are not their real names.

Now Lucy has the purity
Along with the unsurety
That comes with being only twenty-one.
Jessie has maturity
And plenty of security.
Whatever you can do with them she's done.

Given their advantages,
You may ask why
The two ladies have such grief
This is my belief,
In brief:

Lucy is juicy
But terribly drab.
Jessie is dressy
But cold as a slab.
Lucy wants to be dressy.
Jessie wants to be juicy.
Lucy wants to be Jessie
And Jessie, Lucy.

You see, Jessie is racy
But hard as a rock.
Lucy is lacy
But dull as a smock.
Jessie wants to be lacy,
Lucy wants to be Jessie.
That's the sorrowful précis;

It's very messy.

Poor sad souls,
Itching to be switching roles.
Lucy wants to do what Jessie does;
Jessie wants to be what Lucy was.

Lucy's a lassie
You pat on the head.
Jessie is classy
But virtually dead.
Lucy wants to be classy.
Jessie wants to be Lassie.
If Lucy and Jessie could only combine,
I could tell you someone
Who would finally feel just fine!

"I Know the Truth" from Aida.  Music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice

Amneris:

How did I come to this?

How did I slip and fall?

How did I throw half a lifetime away

Without any thought at all?

This should have been my time

It's over, it never began

I closed my eyes to so much for so long

And I no longer can.

I try to blame it on fortune,

Some kind of shift in a star,

But I know the truth and it haunts me

It's flown just a little to far,

I know the truth and it mocks me

I know the truth and it shocks me

It's flown just a little too far

Why do I want him still?

Why when there's nothing there?

How to go on with the rest of my life

To pretend I don't care

This should've been my time

It's over - it never began

I closed my eyes to so much for so long

And I no longer can

I try to blame it on fortune

Some kind of twist in my fate

But I know the truth and it haunts me

I learned it a little too late

Oh I know the truth and it mocks me,

I know the truth and it shocks me

I learned it a little too late,

Too late.

Also, YAY SRS LOVE, she is so amazing. And that song is amazing too. <3

***

Loving you is not a choice,
It's who I am.

Loving you is not a choice
And not much reason to rejoice,
But it gives me purpose
Gives me voice to say to the world:
This is why I live
You are why I live.

Loving you is why I do
The things I do
Loving you is not in my control.
But loving you, I have a goal
For what's left of my life...

I would live,

And I would die for you.

***

"Loving You" sequence from Passion, which is technically one long song broken up by scene changes and dialogue. Because Stephen Sondheim is awesome that way.
