The Phantom of

The Phantom of the Opera (the movie)

So I watched this Saturday night with my sisters. Epic. Epic epic epic. That music!! I cannot get over it. I've heard it, of course, before, but to see it in action was a whole different thing. Gosh, it's so hard to believe that one man can write all that gorgeous music. I've been fortunate enough to see the real thing on Broadway. I was only nine, so I don't remember the whole thing, and I couldn't appreciate it as I do now. Funny thing is, my sister's high school put it on a few weeks ago. It was good for a high school, but let's face it: it stinks compared to the real deal.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a real genius/prodigy. Not only did he write Phantom, but also so many other musicals. Each one is great and so different from all the others. Plus he wrote a Requiem. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Starlight Express are two of my other favorites!

I just saw this movie, too! It was so awesome! The music was amazing--I'd heard it instrumental before but I don't think with the lyrics. Did any of it scare you slightly?

I would like the movie on general principle except that I hate Gerard Butler's voice with the FIERY PASSION OF A THOUSAND SUNS, so...

The musical itself is fantastic though. I've never seen it live, unfortunately.

That was a down side...I don't really like his voice either, and I thought he was a little too good-looking to be the Phantom. Also, his eye behind the mask was perfectly normal until he took it off, and then it was pulled down on the bottom. The black mask he wears in Don Juan shows a scar-free forehead, but later his "deformity" goes all the way up into his hair. AND, he says something about the face a mother could never love, but they looked like burn scars or something similar to me, not a deformity he was born with.

Anyway, those are the things that bothered me.

But then, I am a stickler for slightly obvious continuity mistakes, so maybe they don't bother anyone else.

@ Brynne and TNO--I thought Gerald Butler was pretty good for a non-professional singer, but NOWHERE near as good as the original (Michael Crawford). I thought Christine had quite an impressive voice too (and she was only 18, I think, when she was cast).

I have noticed that the guy who plays Raoul has no singing talent whatsoevah. He can carry a tune, but he can barely go low or high. Oh, and while I think Gerald Butler is ok, I HATE how he whispers really low notes because he can't hit them. Seriously, that's not what you're supposed to do. That's why you use something called recording studios and editing systems.
