Phantom of the

Phantom of the Opera!!!!!!!!! On my birthday (last Sunday) my parents surprised me by taking me to a live broadcast from London of Phantom of the Opera's 25th Anniversary Performance at Royal Albert Hall!!!!!!!!!!! It was shown at a movie theater so it had pretty awesome sound and a giant screen. It was AMAZING!!! The next best thing to seeing it live (something that, sadly, hasn't happened yet). The actors and actresses were AMAZING (I even loved Raoul, a character I despise)!!!!! At the end of the show Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and almost all of the original cast come on stage. Sarah Brightman sang, along with four differend Phantom actors (including Colm Wilkinson, the original Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and an incredibly talented singer), "Phantom of the Opera". The four Phantom actors sang "Music of the Night", and then the entire cast (original and 25th anniversary cast) sang it together! It was INCREDIBLE!!

So, who else loves PotO? Any favorite actors or actresses for certain roles? Opinion on the movie?

What a great present, Emma! You'll have the memories for the rest of your life! Phantom has great music. I did see the show awhile ago in Chicago, but we were in about the last row of the theater. We could see the whole stage, but the actors looked like ants. I've now decided that if you're going to a show, you should get at least a fairly good seat or else stay home.

WOW, that's amazing Emma!!  I saw Phantom about a year ago at the Pantages theatre in LA, and it was fantastic to say the least.  And oh my goodness Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford and COLM WILKINSON! *swoon*  You are one very lucky person.  What a great birthday present.

Anyway, I just saw the movie last week with a friend who is completely obsessed and I have to say it was not as good as the play.  Gerard Butler kinda annoyed me - he just wasn't as good as he was on stage and certainly wasn't as good as Michael Crawford.  Emily Rossom I thought was fine - awhile ago, I preferred her to Sarah Brightman because well, Sarah Brightman's voice is unique and takes some getting used to.  But now, I think they're both good and I can't quite decide.  However, I think I'm leaning towards Sarah at this point.

I think the Phantom is a wonderful character, chock-full of angst (squee!!) with a twisted past to boot!  He's so wonderfully crafted, which reminds me - I must read the book soon!  In fact, I didn't used to mind Raoul too much, since I loved "All I Ask of You," but in the movie, he was just plain annoying.  If I were to chose between the Phantom and Raoul, I'd definitely go with the Phantom.

Oh, and happy belated birthday!!  Best wishes and balloons: O~~~~  O~~~~~  O~~~~~

Angst: A-N-G-S-T. Angst. Definitely one of my easier Spelling Bee words.:P Whenever I run across one of my Spelling Bee words I spell it out loud. I should make a Spelling Bee thread but I'm too lazy.

Spammythecat says cppc. =^..^=

Sorry I have nothing to say about PotO.

I've never seen it before, but I've heard that it's really good! :)

And Emma, you live in CA? What part of it? Any chance you live in the LA area?

@Leaf: I want to see it performed live SO bad!! (Well, the broadcast was live, but you know what I mean.) Colm Wilkinson is AMAZING! His version of "Music of the Night" is incredible!! On that last gorgeous high note of the song he starts on a veryyy high note and then goes up.. and up... and up... and up!! His range is just amazing!!!!! It was an amazing birthday present!!

Gerard Butler is okay, but he has these notes throughout the movie down in his chest that he just growls out, and they sound awful!! They're just gross and harsh and icky! I watched the movie before I had heard any of the originals, and I also used to prefer Emmy Rossom over Sarah Brightman for the same reasons as you. Now, I like both of them (Sarah just takes getting used to, like you said). I think Emmy could be a little stronger on her high notes. She also has almost no vibrato which I think can hinder her volume and strength.

The Phantom is just phantastic (hehehe)!! I lovvvveeeeee him! My parents think I'm crazy, but I would definitely have chosen him over Raoul!! I also love "All I Ask of You", but in the movie Raoul just wrecks it! I hate him in the movie!! He was super great in the play, though, and I could sort of see how she might love him, but I still would have chosen the Phantom!!

As to the book, I bought it and was about half-way through it when I lost it somehow!!!! I NEED to find it!!

Thanks for the birthday wishes!!!

@ZB: Nope, I live near-ish Modesto and San Jose and Sacremento.

You should really watch PotO! :)
