So my church

Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

So my church

So my church is really small, and there are about four people in it who can play piano decently. One of them always plays but she has three kids, one of whom has autism, so she's really busy. The other rarely comes, and the third person is okay, but I'm better. (Excuse the stuck-upness- I don't mean to be rude or anything- but I do play a few grades higher.)

Anyways, I've been filling in for the main piano person for the prelude (song before the service or something), the hymn, offering, and the welcome song. I'm chill on the prelude, offering and welcome song, but the pastor just told me the music for the hymn half an hour ago. And the service is tomorrow morning. And I can't really practice right now because my brother doesn't like it. *annoyed* I was able to get a decent hang of it before I had to stop. But still.

Yeah... I felt like ranting. I should probably go do my science journal homework now. *does not like science*

I would ask your pastor to please give you more advance notice about any music he wants you to play next time. And for accompanying a hymn, I would just keep going with the right hand/melody if you can't do the whole thing on short notice. The main point is to keep the melody going for the singers. I would say just because your brother doesn't like it is not a good reason to have to quit practicing when you've had such short notice. Won't your parents support more practice time?

Can you practice early tomorrow morning? Anyway, if someone else in the congregation could do better than you, then they'd be up there playing. So just do you best.

Awww! Thanks, Admin! You're so sweet!

Anyways, according to my dad, the pastor has to write a sermon then find a hymn to accompany it, which takes a few days I guess. And I'll probably do what you suggested for the hymn, since the music is for vocals making it mostly just chords. And my brother is autistic and his tantrums are annoying, so he gets some perks. :)

And I'll probably practice early tomorrow. My mom will probably make me. A few minutes ago, she made me play some of my pieces again because I made a few mistakes. *sigh* But I got brownies (which I made earlier today) a la mode as a reward, so I'm happy! :P (Oh, and my brother's already sleeping which is why I got to practice.)

I'm sure you'll do fine and the congregation will be appreciative. I still think the pastor should be able to give you more notice. He should pick the theme of his sermon early in the week. I read a mystery novel last year that had a pastor in it, and he said he always read the lessons for the next Sunday on Tuesday and decided what he would preach about by Tuesday night. Then he still had several days to work on the sermon.

I did okay today, a few mistakes and a missed cue... and I'm too shy to ask the pastor anything. Hopefully last week he was just busy and will give me more advanced notice. :)

Well, maybe your parents would speak to him on your behalf.

That's cool that you're playing for the church. Our church had an "artist in residence" until May, and he got pretty famous. They played a song that he wrote in my grandmother's church. In Pennsylvania. And she had nothing to do with it. He moved, and we got a new pianist.
