TANGLED VS. OTHER

TANGLED VS. OTHER

TANGLED VS. OTHER RAPUNZEL RETELLINGS, PRINCESS MOVIES AND THE ORIGINAL FAIRY TALES.

SOOOOOO, long title, but Tangled just came on Instant streaming on Netflix and I re-watched it last night. The first time I watched it I agreed with my dad that the songs weren't very memorable, but after last night I was like WOW these are catchy and I went and bought the downloadable version of "When Will my Life Begin." The songs all remind me of songs from musicals, especially "Mother Knows Best." At the beginning, when the music starts, and she sings "something will go wrong, I SWEAAAAAAAR!" It just sounds like something I've heard in Hello, Dolly! or something similar. The ending credits song makes no sense. "I want something that I want"? "I need something that I want"? That sounds a little bratty for Rapunzel. Anyway, OTHER RAPUNZEL RETELLINGS... I liked Rapunzel's revenge, and I still have not read the original fairytale. And PRINCESS MOVIES in general I don't like, not to offend anyone who does. Snow White is too... good. I don't like all the romance, especially because nowadays all the Disney princess merchandise is geared toward little girls. Most of the movies went WAAAAAY off the fairytales (but I'd better read them before I say too much about that!). I mean, Ariel was supposed to DIE! Her name wasn't even supposed to be Ariel. And Rapunzel wasn't even supposed to be a princess (!), but I liked how she married a thief and not a prince. More interesting. The glowing hair stuff didn't make sense, but it tied together all the added stuff. They didn't even explain why her name was Rapunzel because that part about stealing the lettuce wasn't in it.

Ok, reading that over, it's not very organized, but oh well. I'm not retyping it.

re: Mother Knows Best: Me being... what I am... I need to point out that Donna Murphy is an incredibly accomplished stage actress [i.e., two Tonys for Best Actress, plus several more nominations for the same], and her voice was COMEPLETELY UNDERUSED in Tangled and her song was AMAZING and the best part of the movie and the reprise was EVEN BETTER even though she was weirdly breathy when she sang in Tangled for some reason. /Donna Murphy fangirling. [[her belt is fantastic and she is the best Fosca ever. That is all.]]

Nothing will ever beat the interpretation of Rapunzel's story in Into the Woods. EVEN THOUGH Tangled ripped off their witch's appearance from Bernadette's witch, there is no comparison. That is all.

Ummm as for other retellings, I can't really say I'm that familiar with other versions of Rapunzel, at least not enough to be able to recall specific ones besides the ItW plotline and Tangled. And admittedly ItW isn't even straight up Rapunzel, but a mash-up of numerous fairy tales.

In regards to Disney!fairytales: Well, one doesn't go into a Disney movie expecting faithfulness to the source, now, does one?

@TNO: You're right about Donna Murphy and Mother knows best. It also just has this-musical feeling, meaning from a musical. I'm going to see about rerewatching Tangled.

I loved Tangled! It was definitely really well done. One of the other retellings of Rapunzel, that I like is by Gail Carson Levine and about a girl named Parsley. The witch is a good fairy in that one.

Mother Knows Best was definitely my favorite song from that movie, though. Epicness.

Hey, it's not Ariel's fault the Disney people wanted to make the story better.  I like the Disney versions of most stories better because they add excitement and make it a little less sad.  With the exception of when in Princess and the Frog //spoiler alert// Ray dies //spoiler over//.

Little Mermaid 4eva!!!!

Heeeeeey, The Little Mermaid is a classic! Sometimes tragedy is what a story is about. Sometimes death is more powerful than "and they all lived happily ever after." It's like... Disney decides to make a retelling of Romeo and Juliet and they end up living! In fact, to make it a little less sad, they also take out the parts about the family rivalries and then there's no point of the story!

Not to offend you, of course. If you noticed I used no caps.
