If you don't know much about Pokemon, join anyway! It's pretty easy once you get used to it.

So I was thinking that we can be in the Kanto region. After all, Kanto is the original.

Step by step to creating a trainer:

Step 1:

Start with the regular basis for characters. (I'll use mine as example.):

Name:Hikaru

eye color: green

personality: extremely competitive, likes to have a good time

hair: black, always in a braid

Step 2 :

Choose your starter:

>charmander- a fire type

>squirtle- a water type

>bulbasaur- a grass type

(mine is a charmander)

It's okay to choose the same starter as someone else, just not too many of the same one. All starters are received from Professor Oak in his lab in pallet town. (You may want to look up a map of Kanto.)

Step 3:

Know these important points

-traditionally, trainers come from Pallet town

-Professor Oak is the character with the least common sense (he will ask you things like "are you a boy, or a girl?")

-the goal is to collect eight gym badges to move on to the Pokemon league

-1st gym- Brock in Pewter City- rock types- boulder badge

-2nd gym- Misty in Cerulean City- water types-cascade badge

-3rd gym- Lt. Surge in Vermillion City- electric types- thunder badge

-4th gym- Erika in  Celadon City- grass types- rainbow badge

-5th gym- Koga- poison types- soul badge

-6th gym- Sabrina- psychic types- marsh badge

-7th gym- Blaine- fire types- volcano badge

-8th gym- Giovanni- ground types- earth badge

- team rocket will keep popping up to cause trouble (not always the stereotypical Jesse and James, though)

-once all eight gym badges have been obtained, you will go the the indigo plateau to battle the elite four:

-Loreli- ice types

-Bruno- fighting types

-Agatha- ghost types

-Lance- dragon types

-and then if you defeat them, time for the champion, blue

I would give you a type chart, but I can't type anymore. It's all over the internet though.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, after my long rant, what you do to make the story is first get your starter and develop rivalries and use your imagination for the rest. :)
I stand outside Professor Oak's lab. My breathing quickens as I realize what a crucial moment this is in my life. I am going to get my first pokemon and go on a journey. Enough of my boring old life. I need adventure. And Professor Oak is just the person to give that to me. Funny how everyone claims him to be a nutcase, yet all look up to him as the best pokemon professor that ever lived. I guess that's becuase he invented the pokedex. As I walk inside, a man and a woman, both tall with black hair and glasses, smile at me but say nothing. The professor turns around and a warm, welcoming smile crosses his face.
"Hikaru! What a surprise. You're just in time, because I was looking for someone to go on a journey for me." No surprise really. As if he didn't advertise it enough. The professor walks up to me, and surveys me for a second. "But, before you start, I'll ask some things about you." I start to get uneasy.
"O-kay..." I say slowly. The professor looks thoroghly at me again.
"Are you a boy, or a girl?" he asks. I can't imagine how he can keep a straight face. Is this some kind of joke?
"A girl," I manage to say after an awkward silence. I'm starting to see what people mean about his sanity.
"Okay. What's your name?" He still seems to think that these are perfectly reasonable questions, weird, especially since he just called me by my name.
"Hikaru" I say, more confident this time. If this is what I have to go through for my pokemon, then it will definitely be worth it.
"Okay Hikaru! Time to choose your partner." That came quicker than expected. He lets them all out of their pokeballs. "You can choose from Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur." I quickly choose Charmander, because it's the only one actually moving right now. I don't want a passive pokemon. I smile up at him and then down to Charmander. It jumps into my arms and I suddenly wonder what I had ever done without a pokemon before.
@ Sakura
I've only seen Pokemon Indigo, but I think that at first your starter Pokemon is only allowed to be a Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle.
Name: Uki
Gender: Male
Appearance: Unnaturally blond hair, violet-ish gray eyes, light skin, skinny, average height
Personality: Loves exploring, impatient, competitive...
Pokemon: Squirtle
 I am walking down Route 5 with a large backpack on my back and my faithful Meowth trotting along at my heels. My Meowth isn't really my first Pokemon. He hatched out of his egg on the day I was born so we have exactly the same birthday. I'm not really his trainers because we are more like best friends. That's why I am walking to Pallet Town- to receive my first official Pokemon.
In my bag, I have 50000 Poke for spending. Trainers receive Poke when they win battles, but i have to get a Pokedex first. I can get my Pokedex, my first Pokemon, and some Pokeballs at Professor Oak's lab in Pallet Town. I'm very excited!
"We have a long walk ahead of us, Meowth," I say.
Meowth meows, "Niyaa".
Note on Poke:
Poke is the currency of the pokemon world. There should be an accent over the 'e', but my computer can't do that. Poke is the same as the Japanese yen. While conversion rates change often, a fairly accurate conversion is 100JY (or, in this case, 100 poke) = 1USD. So 50000 poke is $500.
Uki~
I walk nervously into Professor Oak's labaratory. "Err... Professor?" I ask catiously. I had never actually spoken to him face-to-face.
He turns around. "Hello!"
"I'm ready to get my Pokemon..." I say, still a little nervous. Things are said about the professor, and although I'm pretty sure it's all talk, I don't really want to find out. I had said I'd come here today.
"Okay, go ahead. By the way, Uki, what's your name?"
I try really hard to keep from laughing. I manage it but end up sneezing instead. "Err... Uki?"
"And you want to get your starter Pokemon today?"
"Yes," I reply impatiently. Isn't that what I said when I walked in?
"Follow me. By the way... are you a boy, or a girl?"
Now that's just plain offensive, but I'm so close that I don't want to get into an argument. It took me forever just to convince my mom that I'm responsible enough to handle Pokemon. She trusts my older sister Syra, who's in the League, but she doesn't feel like I'm responsible enough to take care of anything. Not even her favorite potted plant.
"A boy!" I exclaim, tired of all of the questions. They finally stop, and he leads me into a room, and lets three different Pokemon out of their balls. I'd hate to be a Pokemon owned by someone, because I'm claustrophobic.
"This is a Charmander," he explains, "A Bulbasaur... and a Squirtle."
I know all that, but I'm not even listening. I'm watching the Pokemon, speechless. I've seen them before, of course, Syra had many, but...
Squirtle walks  up to me curiously, and the way he looks up at me makes me want to melt. "S-Squ-Squirt..." I begin hoarsely, then clear my throat. "Squirtle."
Oh, I'm so sorry! I had no idea :( See, I know practically nothing about Pokemon.
Actually, I acted like a bit of an idiot because I knew  that Charmander Bulbasaur and Squirtle were only the standard. After all, Ash's starter was a pikachu.
I still think Pikachu is the most adorable Pokemon. But anyway, I'm sorry. I acted like some really bossy know-it-all.
