Chatterbox: In This Month's Issue

@Poinsettia & Amethys

@Poinsettia & Amethyst - Scarlet Group Reboot!

So here's our chat thread again! I hope you found it okay now that it's on the TM :) I'm so bad at starting things but ... how were your summers?

My family went to the Pacific Ocean! I've always wanted to go to the ocean for forever, and it was so beautiful and inspiring that I left with pages and pages of writing ideas! I also ate seafood for the first time! I liked the crab but not the clams or mussels. I did like the clam chowder- for some reason it tasted like potato soup? Have you ever eaten seafood?

After that we went to Canada to visit my family there, and that was very nice. I always have trouble keeping track of my cousins though- there are so many and they're mostly all babies.

So now I'll end *awkwardly lol* and wait :)) Apparently I'm bad at ending things too ...

Yay yes this again! I missed our amazing conversations :)

Ooh, going to the Pacific must have been spindiddly. I saw it once, which I'm eternally glad of because it would have been sad to have never seen the ocean, and I remember that it was absolutely beautiful - also amazingly powerful, though, and it made me wonder how sailors ever tried setting off across it in the voyages of discovery. And no, I've never actually tried seafood - I had a chance to try some - oysters? - once but they looked so awful that I refused XD And wow, it must have been so nice to see your family in Canada! I have a baby cousin in Mexico who I've never even visited yet, if you can believe it...

As for our summer, it was really nice :) We didn't go anywhere that far away, but we visited some amazing parks that are fairly close-ish to us. And, of course, I took advantage of the free summer days to read read read and write write write, which was an edifying experience lol. And we went to libraries and to a couple of activities, which were really fun. Besides, of course, the baby bunnies which habitually come to our garden in the summertime :))))

Anyhow, I'm so glad to be seeing (reading?) you again! Don't worry about awkward beginnings - I can never think of things to say to begin conversations either :/

Flamie hiii!! I've missed being able to chat with you!

The Pacific Ocean and Canada sound wonderful! I've been to Montreal and I loved it :) I have eaten seafood - I think it was mussels or something. I haven't gotten many opportunities to branch out and try different types, though.

My summer was pretty good, like Amethyst said! We went exploring in nature a lot, going hiking in the nature areas nearby, which was fun. And we also took some chess lessons with a very hilarious, fun teacher who made lots of witty remarks; he was very no-nonsense, but in a sparky way. (We already knew how to play chess, but it ws fun to play it with other people). Have you ever played chess?

I have to go now so I'll stop there... but it's so nice that we can go on chatting now!

Hey guys! I definitely missed this too- it's like having online pen-pals!

I've played chess a few times with my brother, but he almost always beats me. We usually play more games in the winter; in the summer we like to be outside :) What other games do you like? Settlers of Catan is of course my favourite. My second favourite is Carcassonne, and then maybe Clue.

Hiking and going to parks sounds awesome! There's a small nature park close to my house, and I love going off the paths to explore. (I know in nature parks you aren't supposed to go off the paths, but in this one it's allowed. And it's hard to resist- there's so much to explore!) I love all the trees, making forts on hills with my siblings, imitating bird calls, just everything. One time we saw two fawns in the woods! There is also an old ski lift from the 1960's with the old posts and pulleys which we explored once! It was cool, but a little eerie the way old buildings are.

Are you still homeschooled? I wish I were, but I'm back at my freezing cold school. The air conditioners are always on and I get cold really easily. The best part of the day is the bus ride home when I get to unthaw :/ Uggh, I know I should be thankful for my education, but it's hard sometimes ...

Oops, sorry I always write so much! Hope to hear from you soon!~

Oh dear. Beaten by a brother :( Poinsettia and I play sometimes, and usually we're fairly well matched. I agree with Poinsettia, though - the chess lessons were so much fun, to get to play with (and meet) other people. Yess of course Catan is a Favorite Forever. And oh my gosh, you play Clue?!?! We do also, now and then - I enjoy it, though it might not be one of my favorite games. I also love Chinese Checkers, and Othello, and Pente.

Wow, the nature park near you sounds great :) A couple of times we've seen fawns too... they're so sweet, and I love seeing them. Yeah, it's strange how old, deserted buildings have an entirely different vibe to them. Making forts on the hills with your siblings... *dreamy sigh* That sounds wonderful. I've tried a couple of forts too, sometimes; once I managed to make a small one, but generally it's vErY dIfFiCuLt.

Yes, we're still homeschooled. Help, on-all-the-time air conditioners must be awful :/ I suppose that there are, in the end, a lot of advantages of homeschooling. Honestly, the purpose of air conditioning is entirely destroyed if it makes the air too cold.

Aah don't worry, I always tend to ramble on forever too XD Which reminds me, actually - in our last Scarlet Group thread, you mentioned wanting to read The Last Battle this summer... did you manage to?

I'm alive!! Sorry it's been a while, I had tests in Spanish, Chemistry, History, Geometry, P.E., and chair placements in band that I was practicing for! Now I'll go on a posting spree and catch up w/ everything :D

So I didn't get to reading The Last Battle this summer. You probably know how it is when you find more books you want to read and read them first instead, and you don't actually get to reading the books you wanted to read in the first place! I'll let you know when I read it though- hopefully soon!

Do you do any art: drawing, painting, ect.? I like sketching sometimes, mostly horses :) I took an art class 2 years ago and also had landscape painting lessons a reeeally long time ago. I'm a perfectionist, and I always hate how my paintings turn out because they're nothing like how I imagine them to be! I've been reading some graphic novels with very beautiful art lately, and I kind of want to try doing some sort of a story in a graphic novel format now.

I hope you had good weekends! Bye for now!

Yayy you're alive! Sorry for taking so long to respond myself :( i haven't had as many tests as you did ~luckily~ (in fact I haven't had any), but still the week's been fairly busy. Hope your tests went well :)

Yess I definitely know that feeling. There are always so many good books to read, and no time better for reading them as summer. I basically spent this summer finding new books and reading them. (And doing all those other things Poinsettia and I mentioned, but reading and going to libraries still made up about 50% of the summer ;) )

I've been doing some art, most of it because it's obligatory for sChOoL but some for myself. Over the summer I got more into calligraphy (I'd been doing some before, but I did some more, and some illumination as well), and i say that counts as art :) I used to draw horses a lot more... I'd like to get back into it, but I haven't done it for a while. Other than that, I'll basically draw anything; I like using markers and colored pencils for some reason. I always used to have the same problem of having my artwork not turning out how I'd imagined, but actually it's been coming out better lately, which is something I'm very happy about. Ooh, a graphic novel, that sounds nice!

Thanks, I had (two by now, oops) good weekends :) I hope you have a good week, too!

*random interesting fact: i'm listening to Mai by Giuliano Desideri while I write this, in case that's interesting. it was on the September CB playlist*

Hello again! Calligraphy and illumination sound beautiful! I feel like talking about books and writing, so hopefully that's good with you! :) *launches into book discussion!*

I'm currently re-reading The Mysterious Benedict Society, which is very good and very funny! I love books that can make me laugh, no matter how serious the situation the characters are in! I've had it before with other series (have you read the Green Ember??) that I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time, so I just sort of made an awkward choking noise!

I often dream about the books I'm reading, and meet the characters in my dreams too. When I was reading Lord of the Rings for the first time, I dreamed that one of the characters was bad, and then I didn't trust that character for a long time. (He turned out to be good, which was almost a disappointment!).

Are you two writing any stories at the moment? When I write stories, I have so much fun with my main characters, and then I struggle getting conflict, or making antagonists. Part of me just wants everyone to be nice and good, but then it's not a story! Do you have any tips on making villains and things? I also want to write about meaningful things, and topics I care about, but it's so hard to incorporate that without making the story too serious, so I'm not sure what to do. Any thoughts about that?

Hope to hear from both of you soon!

That's definitely good with me! There's nothing more interesting than talking about books and writing :)

No, I haven't read The Green Ember, though I've heard of it - I should probably try reading it. And yes, definitely books with some humor are The Best.

Omg, I've dreamed about book characters once or twice too! Only after I'd finished the books they came out in, though. Oh dear, he was good :/ He should have had a proper respect for how he appeared in your dream. I myself just finished reading Ivanhoe - it was better than I'd expected it to be, and though it does go into long, long descriptions, it somehow manages to keep you interested all the way to the end. I finished it in about three days ;)

Yes, I'm writing stories - four of them, two of which are solo writes :/ Rather obviously, none of them are advancing that quickly. Probably I ought to just leave one of them for later, but now I'm wrapped up in all of them, and so it gets very difficult. Oh dear, yes, I sympathize - antagonists are very tricky to inlude in stories. My tips would be to either go ahead and make the villain wIcKeD but know that he/she will be ousted in the end (which usually makes the ending wonderful and worth all the things your characters went through in the rest of the story), or introduce a villain who has a reason for doing the things he/she does (for example, a troubled past), and have him/her/whatever relent in the end. Also, it helps to make the villanies of the villain open new paths for the heroes or force them to take new routes that might be better for them in the end.

Yes yay, it's great to hear that you also try to incorporate things that matter to you in your books :) I also do that, where possible. In fantasy, it's helpful to include those elements but in a semi-disguised form - for example, if you want to talk about the wildfires in Canada, you can have the heroes have to fight a string of fires or something like that. In realistic fiction, if you don't want it to become too serious, you can have your protagonist worry about it (e.g., taking the same example of the wildfires, "Grandma was adamant that 'The wildfires can't touch me', but when I thought about the fires encircling her tiny town out there in Canada, I couldn't help hoping she'd be all right.") I've found that that also helps to add depth and meaning to my writing.

Anyway, I sould probably stop there for now, but I hope this long ramble helps :)

Yay, that helps! I've also had a writer's block *double frown, sad face, & grimace of pain* but yay I'm over that too!

I'm making an oral conlang right now! It's interesting to try to focus on sounds instead of how the words look, because I'm such a visual person. I want my conlang to have a certain feel or ambience to it, which I'm still trying to figure out. It's supposed to be pretty simple and nature-orientated ...

Have you been up to anything fun irl? My family stayed over at my grandparents' house because we were getting our insulation fixed last weekend. My grandma works at a bakery and loves to spoil us with cookies, and we had a lot of fun!

Oyez, oyez, oyez! I'm back! I've missed chatting with you sm, it's great to finally re-join the conversation :)

Ooh, congrats on getting over your writer's block! What are you writing right now (if you'd like to share?) I've been going through a kind of stagnant writing phase for like two years; I write and write, but it just doesn't feel right, somehow. But I'm gradually advancing out of it, and finding inspiration all over the place. Just this summer I had like ten ideas for rom-coms?? Oh, and your conlang sounds amazing - I'd love to see some of the words, if you'd like to share! I definitely know that feeling of wanting a conlang to have a particular sound or ambience. I think that's honestly one of my favorite things about them. I've begun work on a language to be spoken in a desert world, which I may never finish, but I love the way it sounds so far. Btw, how's it going with your Vafalian conlang? I remember you were working on it a while back, and it sounded lovely :)

Wow, staying at your grandparents' house must have been wonderful. Spending time with family members is always the best, in my opinion. Especially spending time with grandmas who spoil you with cookies... ;) My grandma also makes cookies and brownies and stuff like that; I guess it's a grandmotherly thing to do in general. Hmm, well, answering your question, I went to a book sale recently with my mom and sister. We staggered out of there with about twenty-six items! And that's despite having gone to book sales for years. We're a very book-oriented family :) Have you been reading anything interesting lately?

How's school going? Mine is taking up a lot of my time, but it's pretty interesting. I'm learning French! It's my first time learning a new language, so it's exciting, and speaking Spanish helps because French is sort of similar to Spanish in some things.

Hmm, it looks like I'm being summoned to eat lunch, so I'd better go... hope to hear from you soon! :)

Yay, you're back! I missed talking with you!!

So you're learning French?! I really want to learn French after I learn Spanish! I love languages, and French sounds so sophisticated and aesthetic. My Dad knows some French and taught me all the numbers. I used to be able to count to one hundred, but it's been a couple years so I forgot some (or most) of it. I also want to learn Latin, Quenya, and Sindarin (although I know they aren't practical). My brother and I also know a few words of Klingon. We like to speak it during family dinner to get everyone's attention!

Vafalian has kind of morphed into the oral conlang I mentioned. Its proper name is Vafalagharigh, but that's kind of wordy so I just refer to it as Vafalian :D. I'll share a few words as long as it's fine with the admins :)

      harra - a bone-chilling wind

      mari - sorrow

vafa - noble/regal (root word of Vafala, my fantasy world)

vaghar - honour/reverence (a weighty concept in Vafalian tribal culture)

I'd love to hear some of your conlang too! Mine has a few rules so far: words may not begin with vowels, there is no "t" sound, only "th", and no "e", but the letter "i" makes the long "ee" sound.

Sorry it took me so long to respond! School has been okay, but very very busy. I'm glad your classes are interesting!

Hi! ack I'm so sorry it took me a while to respond. I went on one of my intermittent breaks from staring at a computer, but I really should have been more prompt - I do apologize :/

Learning those languages would be so cool! As for practicality... well... who cares :)  There's actually a book in my house with all the words of one of the languages Tolkien invented. I can't remember which conlang it was, but it's super fun to browse through. It's amazing how much they sound like real languages.

And Vafalian sounds beautiful! Tysm for sharing those words! I especially like the word "harra" for some reason - it just sounds so much like a bone-chilling wind, somehow. I have a feeling that whenever I think of a cold wind, that word is going to be coming into my mind... All those other words are lovely too :)

For my desert conlang, I'm trying to give all the words a sort of rounded, lush sound; not too many vowels or throaty noises, and not too many consonants.  It sounds a little like Arabic so far, but smoother, I think. Here are a few words of it:

-larina - luscent daughter. the lar- prefix has to do with light, and -ina means daughter.

-zardina - daughter of the garden (zard meaning garden, and -ina again meaning daughter)

-j'assam - of bravery. Assam is bravery, and the j' beginning means "of". If the following word begins with a consonant, the j' changes to jar'. The j sound is pronounced like the Spanish j.

-ekara: loved one. kara = love, and the e- prefix means "one", as in a person.

-Destira - the name of the desert

-Almedi - the name of the ancient tribe that used to inhabit Destira, and that still exists as a remnant of its old glory

I saw that you started a thread on Inkwell about worldbuilding - I hope to post on it when I get a chance :) Worldbuilding is definitely a topic I can talk about for hours...

In other news, my family and I went to a small forest nearby and saw a gorgeous waterfall! It was just pouring down into a little stream, and it was pretty large considering the size of the stream. We went there with friends and had a great time in general :) Have you been able to go on any interesting nature outings?

Oh, and I've been meaning to recommend the song "Old-Fashioned Girl" by Lisa McHugh! I'm not quite sure if it's the style you like, but the lyrics are just so much like the three of us that I wanted to mention it. It's like it was written for us specifically :)

Have you been reading anything good lately? I went to the library the other day and got four or five biographies about Dolly Parton, Agatha Christie, and others. I love reading biographies about people I'm familiar with - it's fascinating to enter their worlds and discover what they were like. It's like reading a novel, but almost better, because the characters are real and you don't have to finish the book and sigh wistfully, "I wish this person actually existed..."  If you could meet any famous person, which one would you choose?
