POOOOOOOOOOOST!!!!ParticipantTOP

Rose budParticipantWhen the poem says "I was a child and she was a child" that doesn't necissarily mean children. It is also a symbol for innocence and joy.
-
Rose budParticipantI wrote a poem for the prompt titled "Heaven Sends Its Love." I am not going to post it because I am going to probably submit it somewhere, and though it probably won't be published, I won't post it as a precaution. I did write a poem about "love" though!

TexasOkay, I did some research about Poe, and I think this poem may be connected to Poe's beloved wife, Virginia.
Apparently she caught tuberculosis, a disease that had killed so many of Poe's loved ones. She died in Poe's arms. It was a great blow for Poe, and I can imagine he put a lot of his sorrow and loss into his poems.
"I should have lost my courage but for you – my darling little wife – you are my greatest and only stimulus now to battle with this uncongenial, unsatisfactory and ungrateful life." Poe said.
Also, when Virginia knew she was dying, she promised Poe that after death, she would be his guardian angel. Maybe that plays somewhere into the last lines:
“For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the sounding sea.” (BTW, I think we should discuss this verse a lot.)
Maybe she sends him dreams? IDK, I just think this sounds so much like Virginia, his “darling…life…and…bride”.
That’s what the poem means to Poe, I believe. Though we’ll never know for sure, because only Poe knows exactly what he means. I can almost imagine him, looking down at us, smiling and shaking his head…”Ah, those studious youngsters, they are so entertaining, but they have it all wrong.”
Now what does the poem mean to ME…that’s a little different.
This poem, to me, really has a nighttime setting, with the full moon and the stars. I
gtg for just a tiny bit, will finish later.

TexasWhat this poem means to me…….Eternal love. Passionate love. The idea that nothing can sever you from your true love, not even death. When I read this poem, I get a picture in my mind of the two lovers, first holding hands by the sea, alone, and with cliffs surrounding them as the waves crash gently on the shore. The wind blows Annabel’s long hair lightly, and she and the lover gaze into each others eyes (sorry if this sounds totally sappy; I cant help what I imagine!)I imagine Annabel Lee as a tall, pretty young woman with long, golden hair. She has silvery blue eyes and pale skin. The features of her face are gentle; and you feel calm when you look upon her. She has a lovely smile. She wears a long, simple red dress.I imagine her, then, alone, without her lover, standing by the shore. The wind chills her, and she feels cold, but she stays. The angels up in the clouds have their hands open, wind coming from their palms, smirks on their faces. Annabel Lee closes her eyes as the wind takes her away…Then the lover, standing alone on that same spot where they kissed, and where she was lost. And then I see a ghost of Annabel, whispering in his ear.So, um, yeah. The lover feels so overcome with sorrow that soon he becomes numb, and all he can do is see her everywhere. When I read the poem, it seems light and lyrical, but the more I discuss it, it feels well, a little more depressing. Funny how poems change as you dig deeper into them.I pose two questions- no, actually three, to the group:What do you picture when YOU read this poem? It doesn’t have to be what’s going on in the poem. It could be something sort of symbolic, like uh….something in real life, or like, two doves or something.Do you think the end of this poem is beautiful? Do you think its weird subject matter makes it more or less appealing? And like always……what does this poem mean to YOU?please answer the questions. and submit your poetry, if you want to, of course.then we will move on to a new poet, when i say so.im looking for a little more modern, a little less traditional than Poe and Frost. More surreal, or abstract, or lighter, or just…..you, know, different,Two possible candidates so far are Mary Oliver and Shel Silverstein.Any other ideas? do tell; i need at least three candidates.-
Rose budParticipantwheretheredferngrowsWhat do you picture when you read the poem:
I picture a girl with long brown braids and a dress, and these blowing around her in a wind from the nearby sea. Her dress is layered, with a brown and white striped underdress, and a top layer of blue-green blue, and orange-red. Her eyes are brown. I also picture a man with black clothes, black eyes and a dreary expression standing beside Annabelle Lee.
Do you think the end of this poem is beautiful? Do you think its weird subject matter makes it more or less appealing?
No, not a very beautufil ending, though it does have that sad, romantic affect. More or less appealing… by weird subject matter I suppose you mean the angels and all that. I have to say less.

Hogwarts#1 What this poem means to meWhat really draws me to this poem is what happens AFTER Annabel Lee’s death. The lover’s reaction. He doesn’t quite willingly remember her, but he can’t help it. He dreams of her, and he can’t stop thinking about her, because he loves her so much, he will never truly be apart from her.I don’t think he’ll suicide, but he won’t be too unhappy about death, I guess… “Finally, I shall see Annabel….”You’re right, Owlgirl about the mood change as you dig deeper. Now that I think of it, the poem sort of ends on a depressing note. But it’s still beautifully written.I mean, it’s Poe!#2 what I imagine….I imagine very abstract images, like…watercolor. I imagine lots of things about the last verse, sprt of the different theories we have about the speaker lying down next to Annabel Lee.First, the creepy image, him lying in her coffin, like Romeo and Juliet or something. I push that out of my mind and imagine Annabel Lee lying on top of the clouds, a hazy image, sort of a spirit. She has long, tangled black hair and wears a long, tattered, white dress, like a wedding gown, only its not a edding gown. She has ghostly pale skin. I cant really see her face. She looks down at the speaker, wistful. The speaker stands below, staring at the sky. He can’t see her, but he believes she’s there.Oh, and somewhere in there, I imagine a rose. I don’t know why.Oh, and a full moon.#3 about the endingUmm…it doesn’t really make it more or less appealing for me. Just makes me feel sad. Like, “And so they all died, and he was never happy again. The end.”If I had rewritten the poem, I would have made something weird happen, like before the angels chilled her to death, the lover jumped in front of Annabel lee and blanketed her and carried her off.If I still wanted a sad ending, id make it so the speaker dies of cold onstead of her, from shieding her.um, maybe have Maya Angelou as a nominee? -

Texasoooookay, I start school on the 24th, so I have a little over a week until my summer vacation ends. i will not be able to do Cricket a lot during the school year.
therefore, i want to do as much as i can in the poetry club before my summer is over.
i want to start the voting for the next poet. you can still submit your poems for Annabel Lee.
Once again, we shall vote between three poets. I think I will include Mary Oliver and/or Shel Silverstein.
Any ideas for a nominee?
once again, im looking for more modern or abstract or, just very different from what we've studied so far.
please submit your ideas.

What about Lewis Carroll? I read Alice in Wonderland for my summer reading and his poetry is amazing- like How Doth the Little Crocodile and Father William and The Walrus and the Carpenter.
I have an Annabel Lee poem, I just felt a little weird posting one about love because it's not like I actually have the experience. But I'll post it anyway.
If only
Love were as easyAs the fairy tale princeAnd the beautiful girl.If onlyAs soon as you met themYou knew in an instantThey were the one.If only.ButIn real lifeLove means tryingAnd failingLosingAnd waiting.Having no clue what you're doing. But everyone finds loveSomewhereAll it takesIs patienceAnd hopeAnd some dayYour heart- often brokenWon't breakAnymore. The ending is kind of abrupt…-
Rose budParticipantI vote for Mary Oliver and nominate Barbara Groce. I don't think I will be posting anymore of my prompt-poems, but I will write them.
-
Rose budParticipantI also nominate Robert Lynn.

Texas@Sydney C: That's okay, no need to feel awkward in this club! I haven't had the experience, but I've written some pretty convincing poems… I get the idea from all the books and poems I read.
I like the idea of your poem, and the rhyming around losing and waiting…
