KaiotaParticipantFinally. Free period.
So far I had survived the whole week. After Millicent's encouraging advice at the beginning of the week, I had tried ever harder to find my specialty. And I still couldn't do even beginner magic.
My free period was my last, so I had an extra hour or so before I had to eat dinner. Dehlum had strict eating times, and you did not want to break curfew. At least that was what our teachers told us.
After dropping my stuff off in my dorm, I ran through the halls and out into the grounds. I wanted to get away from the constant noise of the school and all of the people. Back home, the most people I had ever seen in one place was maybe fifty. That had been at a clan gathering. At school, over 1000 students roamed the halls, and it was easy to get lost.
The grounds were a vast expanse of magical terrain. I saw a jungle that bordered a partched desert. The desert blended into a delta that stretched as far as the eye could see. Every single biome you could think of was mushed into the magically enhanced space, complete with specific wildlife.
I decided to try the jungle and see where it led me. Starting off into the dense foliage, I began to see familiar trees and flowers. It looked exactly like the jungle that could be found at the very heart of our island, and the sight of the plants made me happy.
A small breeze ruffled through the trees, twisting around my hair and cooling my skin. I twirled my fingers absently, imagining the wind winding around my hand like thread.
To my surprise the breeze moved from my head and swirled around my hand. Smiling, I lifted my arm and the wind followed. I threw it out it front of me, and it scattered like sand. I twirled around and around in circles and felt a small whirlwind begin to grow. The surrounding bushes were whipped in the gusts, and I laughed with the sheer pleasure of controlling the wind.
Then I stopped suddenly. The wind stopped abruptly as well, and the forest again filled with the cacophony of insects and birds.
Controlling the wind. I had controlled the wind.
Suddenly exhilerated I whooped with joy. I had found my specialty.
