First Sentences, Favorite...

First Sentences, Favorite

Okay, guys, this is the thread for favorite first sentences. I'm sorry, I have one, but my baby sister is sleeping in that room, and I can't remember it! So put down the sentence, the title of the book, and who wrote it. I'll be back later to put mine up...

"Everything was silent, except for the screaming." M.T. Anderson, The Game of Sunken Places

It's not exactly my favorite first sentence (I'm not sure what is) but it's actually kind of humorous....

My favorite first sentence is from Through A Brief Darkness by Richard Peck. "The week before Karen was taken out of public school, she found thee verse scraled in grease pencilon the mirror of the sixth-grade girls' washroom."

The Lightning Thief

"Who's there?"

From Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. How can you not love that?

Just kidding. On such short notice, I pulled four of my favorite books off the shelf and couldn't decide between the opening sentence of three of them. Here they all are, from Emily of New Moon, Emily's Quest, and The Story Girl, respectively, all by L.M. Montgomery.

"The house in the hollow was 'a mile from anywhere' -- so Maywood people said."

"'No more cambric tea' had Emily Byrd Starr written in her diary when she had come to New Moon from Shewsbury, with her high school days behind her and immortality before her."

"'I do like a road, because you can be always wondering what is at the end of it.'"

I especially like the last one, but there's something charming about the first one, and the second one is kind of cool. If you didn't notice, I like L.M. Montgomery. No doubt, if I pulled my other favorite books off the bookshelf there would be eight or nine more to add to these, but I'll stop here, as it's getting late.

The Hobbit.  This is most likely one of the most memorable first sentences of all, ever.Laughing

I never thought about how I would die, but going in the place of someone I loved seemed likea good way to go.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Twilight. I mainly thought of it because I hear it so often, thanks to twiight fans, but it's purdy cool all the same. Twilight, Meyer
Okay, I think the Admin modifies my posts sometimes, because once I made a thread, and it started "Okay, so remember..."  but the click-on thingy for it said "Audition: Okay, so..." and I DIN'T PUT THE AUDITION THERE! and now this says "First Sentences, Favorite..." and I would never ever word it like that.
Admin, is it you, or what??
Yes, Brynne, sometimes we do that, stating the subject at the beginning of the comment, so people scanning can easily see what the topic is. Does that make sense to you? Hope you don't mind.
