First Sentences, Favorite

Okay, guys, this is the thread for favorite first sentences. I'm sorry, I have one, but my baby sister is sleeping in that room, and I can't remember it! So put down the sentence, the title of the book, and who wrote it. I'll be back later to put mine up...

"In a city called Stonetown, near a port called Stonetown Harbor, a boy named Reynie Muldoon was preparing to take an important test."

~ The Mysterious Benedict Society, by Trenton Lee Stewart

My autocorrect hates me right now. But aside from that, I love this sentence probably for no reason other than that this book was a defining feature of my childhood (I listened to it on audiobook when I was about three years old and have read it about once a year since then.) So, obviously, the first sentence of something that means so much to me makes me feel happy and at home just reading it.

"Who are you?"

~ See You in the Cosmos, by Jack Cheng

This sentence is just so perfect. I rarely see books with a first sentence that can so perfectly tell the reader what the main character is like, and this sentence (especially combined with the next few sentences, but even just that sentence by itself) basically sums up who the main character is: a boy who wants to explore the universe and ask questions about everything he sees.

"Rain fell that night, a fine, whispering rain."

~ Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke

Just a beautiful sentence, and it describes the aesthetic of the rest of the book so well.

I love how most of these are from Rick Riordan books! Here are some of my favorites:

- (there's a prologue before this one, but I think it still counts) "Grace Somerfield was the first to die." (The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken)

- (also a prologue before this one) "Callum Hunt was a legend in his little North Carolina town, but not in a good way." (The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare)

- "Sophie had waited all her life to be kidnapped." (The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani)

- "Mitsi Kashino packed her sketch pad, her binder, and her worry into her book bag." (Dash by Kirby Larson)

- (this one is part of the prologue) "I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extrordinary things began to happen." (Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ranson Riggs)

- "Of the first few hauntings I investigated with Lockwood & Co. I intend to say little, in part to protect the indentity of the victims, in part because of the gruesome nature of the incidents, but mainly because, in a variety of ingenious ways, we succeeded in messing them all up." (The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud)

- "We only have a few hours, so listen carefully." (The Red Pyramid by, you guessed it, Rick Riordan)
