here's the 2024 book log! if you don't know how this works, here's the drill: once you finish a book, post the title and author here (if you want, you can also include your thoughts on the book, its genres, how many stars out of five you'd rate it, whatever). at the end of the year, you can see how many books you've read, plus you get a ton of recommendations from other people's lists!

oh, I really liked that book too!! I read it around a year ago so I don't remember it too well, but it was very reality-questioning in the best way. I'd 100% recommend The Poppy War by the same author—I personally loved it more than Babel but they're both awesome. It's a bit darker/more violent than Babel but still very well done.

Like a Charm by Elle McNicoll (not my favorite, but great neurodivergent rep)

Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Boy by Emmanuel Acho (very well written + age-accessible discussion on systemic racism!)

Rain is Not My Indian Name by Cynthia Leitich Smith.  (so so good, very short but well-rounded characters)

The Boggart by Susan Cooper. It was much lighter and shorter than most of what I read now, which was nice!

After Iris by Natasha Farrant

A pretty good book about a middle-school girl named Blue whose twin sister Iris died three years ago. Since then, her family has been a bit of a mess. I rate 7.5/10

Leeva at Last by Sara Pennypacker 

A really great book about a girl named Leeva Thornblossom who has been stuck at home her whole life, not knowing what the outside world is like besides through TV and newspapers, until one day, she asks a question: What are people for? I rate 8/10

Exhalation by Ted Chiang! A really awesome collection of short story sci-fi, but some mature themes.

Singing with Elephants by Margarita Engle

A really good book in verse about a girl named Oriol who meets a famous poet and aspires to write poetry as well. It also includes topic on xenophobia (fear of outsiders/foreigners) and animal cruelty. I would definitely recommend this book. I rate 8.5/10

Cinder: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

A sci-fi version of Cinderella set in the future in New Beijing where Cinder is a cyborg mechanic amidst a deadly disease and danger from a race called the Lunars (who live on the moon). Yet Cinder has a secret she doesn't know about herself, until one day she realizes she's immune to the disease. I rate 9/10

Pilar Ramirez: The Escape from Zafa by Julian Randall

It was an okay book about a girl named Pilar who goes to investigate the disappearance of her cousin Natasha and ends up on the fantasy island of Zafa. I rate 6.5/10

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Sequel to Cinder, it's a great book full of action and mixing the fairy tale Red Riding Hood and sci-fi, while still continuing Cinder's story. I rate 8.5/10

Cress: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Third sequel to Cinder, a sci-fi fantasy based on Rapunzel but not focused on it. Cress is a hacker who lives in a satellite orbiting space. Her isolated life intertwines with Cinder, Scarlet, and the rest of the main characters. I rate 8.5/10
