Hunters?

Anyone here who hunts? I do, as of the end of September. I'm chasing this hyoooooge doe, we named her Bleep because whenever she comes in she blows at us and scares away anything within five miles of us.

We've also got a big nine-point buck named Straight Faced Ace, we call him Ace. I sAw HiM wHiLe HuNtInG tHiS mOrNiNg BuT hE sPoOkEd OfF

It was below freezing this morning my toes almost fell off but you better believe I'm shooting Ace this week. It's the height of the rutt, deer mating season, and the bucks, well, they get pretty stupid. Just put out a scent stick that smells like a doe in heat and they don't give a stick for that pile of corn lol

Anyway, who else here hunts or shoots a bow or something like that?

Do you hunt with a bow or a fire arm? I am hoping to go hunting with my dad next year, but that's not really relevant. It's totally cool that you do that. It sounds like it would be fun but really hard.

I'm a bow hunter, Strawberri! It's fun, but it is hard. I use a compound bow, since it 1) Shoots farther than a crossbow with a lighter draw weight, and 2) Even though it needs to have a 40lb draw weight to be legally lethal, when you draw it all the way back, the weight gives off and it's easier to hold steady while you aim.

I love hunting, it's a cold business, and disappointing a lot, but it's so peaceful to hang out in the woods for hours. The past few days, it's been so quiet that I could hear the leaves falling. It sounded like a tap dancer.

I personally think that hunting is morally wrong. The whole purpose of hunting dates back to thousands of years ago, when it was necessary in order to eat. If they didn't hunt, they starved, so it was their only option. I really don't understand why hunting is a thing that people still do now. Most people today have enough resources to buy food at the store, so why do you hunt? Most people will say "because it's fun," but there are so many other fun things to do, and why would you kill a harmless animal that isn't trying to attack you? It doesn't make any sense and I think others will agree that it's wrong. Take up a different hobby like archery, but using a target block (not killing anything).

i understand this thinking. Though I disagree, i am able to respect it. i think that if you kill an animal, you should put it to good use and do it in a humain way.

I appreciate your opinion, but I would like to point out a few things. One, the majority of hunters will tell you that people who hunt for sport, aka because it's fun, are very wrong. An ethical hunter wouldn't kill an animal for any reason other than for food, although occasionally they will have a contest to see who for the biggest animal. We also don't kill animals that haven't had a chance to live a full life. Two, and this one is short, hunting animals is in fact a more humane way to harvest them than the way that the animals you get from the store are treated.

Again, I appreciate your opinion, but I will continue hunting.

To be honest, I agreed with the anonymous poster to begin with, but I do understand where you're coming from, and you make a good point. If you're going to be eating meat anyway, it's much better, in my opinion, to eat meat that came from an animal that lived a good life in the wild and was killed humanely than to eat factory-farmed meat from animals that were abused their entire lives.

Also, it's really cool that you hunt with a bow! I'd love to get into archery (inspired by Ranger's Apprentice), but it seems really challenging and like you'd have to practice a ton to get that level of accuracy.

It is pretty hard to get accurate. I can shoot pretty well though, I've practiced since I was five or six.

Yeah, I used to be totally opposed to hunting, but as Nyx pointed out, it's way more ethical than the way farm-bred animals are treated. Like, at least they get to have a life before they die, whereas in factories they're basically just tortured their whole lives. I personally would never hunt because I couldn't kill animals, but I'm not going to argue with anyone who actually does. (Also it's really cool that you can shoot a bow and arrow, I've kind of always wanted to learn how)

Same as Lupine. The last part of Nyx's statement really stood out to me, I had never looked at it in that light before. I think it's more that, to me, being a total softie and animal lover (despite eating meat) I could never do that.

I do not agree. While I personally would never hunt, I do understand that it's much better for the environment. I admire Nyx for being able to hunt.

Reasons why I do not hunt:

I don't live in a good place to hunt.

I can't shoot an bow AT ALL. Believe me, I've tried shooting a bow before.

I can't stand the sight of an animal dying.

However, I admire that Nyx has the courage to shoot an animal, and I think that's amazing, because it's much better fot the animals and environment.

I've never been hunting but my family hunts. I'm not sure that I would be able to shoot a deer, but I'm fine with my family hunting. This is because as people have previously mentioned, it's better to eat an animal that had a good long life, than one that's raised in a cramped farm. I don't think it's good to hunt just for fun especially if you don't use the meat, but I think it is okay to enjoy the sport. Also when we get a deer it lasts my family for about a year, so that's a whole year of us not having to buy other meat from the store. Now I understand if you are a vegetarian and don't support hunting, but if you do eat meat I think that hunting is a better way to get it than from a store. Also I have been to state parks in Michigan and some of them have signs about how hunting deer can be a good thing because it keeps the population in check. I also like to shoot a bow and a pellet gun I have at targets, we have a compound bow but we somehow managed to lose all the arrows for it, but we have like other bows so it's okay.

I do archery, but I would never kill another animal. I do think hitting targets is fun, though! For one thing, they stay still.
