Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

Earth ClubI

Earth Club

I wasn't really sure where to put this. I think it'd fit best in DtE, but DtE gets a lot of traffic, so I put it here instead.

Here we can discuss about climate change and what we can do to fight it! This is also a place to be enthusiastic about the environment in general - feel free to talk about favorite animals, gardening, ect.

Here's an interesting fact: did you know there's a search engine that uses its money to plant trees? It's completely free to use and functions like any other search engine. There are other environmental search engines, including ones that remove plastic from the ocean, but I find the one that plants trees to be the most functional and reliable. I think that's a really interesting and clever way to contribute to the battle with climate change.

Recently, there was discussion on the Random Thoughts thread about writing letters to rich/powerful/famous people such as Taylor Swift about climate action. Would anyone be interested in planning that?

Yes!!, I would!!! :DD ok, well, seeing as I'm the one who suggested that in the first place, duh of course I would, but... still? :)

I actually did some research a few days back (pro of self-isolation at lunchtime: you Get Things Done with the time that would have been used for socialization) and... it's actually pretty interesting. There's way more controversy surrounding Taylor Swift than I'd originally thought. And, I think we can all agree that she is doing things to help others, but the question is/was- could she be doing more? But yeah, I'll come back with notes later :) tysm for making this @Peri!!

oh and btw, more about the club itself: we could all take a pledge to help save the environment! Every little bit counts! I'll come back with some ideas too if you all want :) :)

Ideas that we could pledge to?:

1. Do NOT follow my example. Seriously. I just spent 30 minutes showering because I was too busy... guess what? Daydreaming. About quite literally nothing. :/ idk my mind just kinda turns to autopilot when I'm underneath warm water... don't do this!! Take short(er) showers!

Some tips: time yourself! With a timer or with a clock or by singing a set song... though the song may distract you (I have experience). Put the timer/clock in a place where you can see it while showering! When you first turn on the shower, usually you have to let it run for a time before it's the temperature you want it to be. Collect this water with a bucket and then use it! Ok but back to shorter showers... if you're prone to a wandering mind like I am, I find it helpful to sorta internally narrate exactly what I'm doing as I'm doing it.

And if you really truly need help, hire a family member to knock on the door after like 10 minutes or whatever and shout at you YOU GOTTA HURRY UP YOU'VE BEEN IN THERE WAY TOO LONG :) don't ask your annoying siblings to do this though, sometimes it goes to their heads

and I actually won't post the others now bc woah that was way too long... anyways, just random ideas bc why not :)

i knowww i'm so bad at taking short showers :// i try, but my hair is really thick and takes foREVER to wash out (although if my parents would let me get that shorter haircut i want, it'd wash out a lot faster--) :P you do have some good tips though :D

oh and also!! my school finally put compost and recycling bins in the cafeteria :DD there is the slight issue of people completely disregarding signs and just throwing their trash in whichever bin, but...it's a start, at least?

but yes!! we should definitely write letters to Taylor Swift/other prominent people! :D i guess we should start with Taylor Swift because that's what got this whole earth club started - what topics do we want to bring up in our letters?

yes! Joining!

@Celine, good idea with the shower! I generally take, mm, 13 minutes? Sometimes more, so I definitely should stick with the 13.

@Peri, the writing letters sound like a solid idea, and I hope someone does do it ;) Um... but not me, lol

Lights! If you have a streetlight outside your house, and it goes out, ask your parents NOT to replace it. It's not really a necassary, and it causes light pollution. And ofc, turn off lights if you aren't in the room! Or if it isn't dark out, just open a window, letting natural light. And maybe any outside lights you have on your house, turn them off? I mean, if your parents can list some reasons to leave them on, whatever, can't really do anything (especially if they're solid-ish ideas)

That's all I have for now...

Oh! I actually have a tip on the shower thing. I've heard of people making short playlists of music to listen to while they shower, so they can keep track of time. Ideally it would be a five minute playlist, but even ten minutes is better than thirty.

I too need to get better at taking short showers :/ Maybe I will make a shower playlist…

As for the letters to Taylor Swift, here's some things we can consider asking her to advocate for climate change on social media, to publicly (or privately, but doing it publicly can help inspire others) donate to good charities that fight climate change, and to help pay for things such as planting more trees. We can also consider pointing out that flying in her private jet is not good for the environment. While she's so famous it's probably unsafe and hard for her to simply fly on a regular airline, she could, in theory, plant more trees, making her carbon neutral (I think that's how it works?), or if there's such a thing as a jet that doesn't pump dangerous gases into the air, use something like that. I'm not sure.

I'm so glad to see another thread about the environment :D Short showers... *sighs and shakes head* I never can take short showers. Yayy writing to Taylor Swift/other influential people would be a good thing to do; I'd propose mentioning the emissions caused from flying, because although I think it is difficult for celebrities to fly on normal flights, the best thing would be to just not fly at all as much as is possible. Also, I think it would help if she publicly endorsed electric cars and anti-climate change causes - if people see that someone like her is involved in stopping climate change, or even just acknowledging its existence, I think it might have a large effect.

At my school, the fourth graders write essays every year about whether the cafeteria should serve bugs or not. I think at some point we should actually make it happen. Has anyone else eaten bugs? (not related to Earth Club)

Ooh and we could also ask Taylor Swift to consider writing a song about climate change! That might help :)

*gasp* Origami says <awtwo>! Yes, Origami, that's two words! Good little captcha.

Ooh, writing letters to influential people would be a great idea! Maybe we could suggest to Taylor Swift that she endorse, and travel on, trains. I think trains are a really good method of transportation, especially high-speed ones, because they can carry so many people, they can be made electric, and they're really fun to ride on lol :)  We could also remind her that climate change is something that is very important to her fanbase, so if she wants to retain their support, advocating for climate action would help. Probably the two most important proposals, in my opinion, would be: a) ask her to reduce her carbon emissions by hook or by crook, both for her fans and for her own sake and b) ask her to advocate more for things like electric cars, reduction of harmful practices like constantly flying on unnecessary trips, reduction of consumption and especially consumption of foreign products,  a shift to solar and wind energy rather than coal and oil, reduction of fracking and mining, the end of military intervention in other countries, and reduction in pesticide use (ohhhhh my gosh if Taylor would just speak up and say "Stop using pesticides because it's ruining the health of humans and the environment!" I would be so happy) I could draft a letter and post it on here if y'all would like that, just to get us started?

I also just had the idea of writing to senators and representatives, who are after all the ones who govern the country (or try to). My mom is always sending off letters to our representatives, but unfortunately we only live in one state and can't really influence anyone except our particular Congressmen/women - but since CBers are scattered all over the US, it would have a much greater effect if all of us did that! Again, we could basically demand of them that they enact policies to support all the things I listed above (electric cars, solar energy, etc). We could even get our parents to send off letters too, as they're the ones who actually wield the Power of Votes. There's so much our government needs to be doing, and so much that people need to do to make sure it carries out its duties. Interestingly I think politics is a two-way street, especially in democracy. Democratic govenments can really have enormous potential, but citizens need to put in some effort too.

Anyway, those are my ideas!

Yess!! I'll try and post replies later, but just wanted to say-

so, topic of conversation at the dinner table 2 days ago: Taylor Swift gossip. Again. XD so heh I was sorta eavesdropping like some secret undercover spy (ok, fine, I was just sitting there listening, but it sounds cooler that way) and here is what I learned...: so basically it was about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce again, sigh, and so TK said he isn't going to the Grammys with TS bc he has to focus on the super bowl but he might dress up and go in disguise bc the Grammys is like TS's superbowl but also remember that TS wouldn't drop a concert just to go hang out with TK football is TK's professional career and anyway TS is gonna have a concert in Tokyo or somewhere and so she's going to have to go there and take a flight all the way back here really quickly to make the superbowl and then we started talking about wait does she have a private jet at which I intervened YES!! cuz I was super excited cuz we were just talking about that here XD

umm so that's the Intel I gathered. Not very helpful Ig, but sorta interesting. And is that flight halfway around the world really necessary? And if it is, then couldn't you have planned the dates a little bit better (unless she hadn't been dating TK at the time or whatever) so you wouldn't have to fly so quickly around the globe in order to make it bc I think for planes when you go faster you burn more fuel, right?

also haha I was just thinking: we're all kinda like a super secret spy network (except that, y'know, the whole internet can read all our plans and know our moves and whatnot)! We're so widespread - Ik we have a lot of people all over the US and some people in Canada and I think Zeal/Ultimatum's in China, right?, and oc Verde is in, uh, Switzerland?? Or somewhere around Italy??, but anyways I think we could all make a real difference around the globe - oh!

@admins, could cricket/muse/another mag do issues on climate change (I think muse might've once, but I forget)? I think that'd be really cool! You could have all the stories and puzzles be climate change-related and the contest be kids writing about climate change and give tips or whatever - even for Cobblestone: would it be possible to do an issue about the history climate change in America and where it might be taking us in the future or whatever?

andd now I gtg, bye! :)

ASK once a whole issue on climate change (ASK “Changing with the Climate” Mar 2017). Other issues that talk about climate change (more than usual; it comes up often!) are: Islands Ask Jul 2022, Pole to Pole Ask Mar 2021, Can Cars Change? Ask Sept 2020.

The January issue of Muse was about ice and our November/December about changes coming to aircraft. Both issues have some climate change-related pieces in them.

Here's a sample letter!

Hello Taylor Swift,

I am writing this

Aw, screw it. So much for a sample letter. Anyone else have ideas?

I don't think the representative idea will work. I wrote to Biden asking him to offer an subsidy to make solar energy cheaper but he simply responded with an encouraging letter. It was a reply but still.
