Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

Earth Club

I wasn't really sure where to put this. I think it'd fit best in DtE, but DtE gets a lot of traffic, so I put it here instead.

Here we can discuss about climate change and what we can do to fight it! This is also a place to be enthusiastic about the environment in general - feel free to talk about favorite animals, gardening, ect.

Here's an interesting fact: did you know there's a search engine that uses its money to plant trees? It's completely free to use and functions like any other search engine. There are other environmental search engines, including ones that remove plastic from the ocean, but I find the one that plants trees to be the most functional and reliable. I think that's a really interesting and clever way to contribute to the battle with climate change.

Recently, there was discussion on the Random Thoughts thread about writing letters to rich/powerful/famous people such as Taylor Swift about climate action. Would anyone be interested in planning that?

I think this is a really great idea!! Public transportation definitely helps with climate change. The idea of asking Taylor Swift to advocate more for things like electric transportation and the reduction of a ton of harmful things to the environment is a good one, mostly because she's super popular right now. But really any powerful figures would help. Anyway, just wanted to say that I entirely support this idea-- it has potential. And it would be great if all (or at least a majority) of Cricket readers helped.

Yes, here are some ideas:

- We can all take different approaches and express different ideas so various points get across to those whom we write letters to.

- Letters should be polite and well-written! Remember that it's much easier to convince someone of a cause when you are polite and kind to them. If the person you're writing to has some accomplishments or has previously donated to other causes you care about, it might help to briefly point that out.

- I think it might help for us each to pick a different focus point we are actually passionate/knowledgable about rather than all trying to do the same thing. Someone who's passionate about fighting extinction might focus on that, whereas someone who's more interested in fighting plastic pollution would be better off talking about that. Does that make sense?

- We should also do research about what we're talking about, of course

Maybe we should work on a template of sorts (which nobody has to follow ofc but someone might find useful), like:

Dear [name of person],

[Hello/other somewhat formal greeting]! I'm [introduce yourself with your name and your age]. I'm writing to you about climate change because [instert reason this person can make change (you are a governor of my state, you are a famous person with a large fandom, ect.)]. [If applicable, you can acknowledge good stuff this person's done, like "I really admired when you helped provide food to starving people by donating to this charity; here's why I think you should consider taking on fighting climate change as a serious cause as well"].

So I guess that'd be an introduction. I don't know where we could go from there.

Dear Taylor Swift,

Hello! I'm Periwinkle, a 14-year-old fan of your music. I'm writing to you today about climate change because you are a very significant and influential person with the power to make a lot of change from where you stand. I really some of the other causes you've supported in your career; I thought it was amazing when you encouraged people to vote! Voting is such an important thing in our nation, and it was great to see you reminding people about it.

Something like that? Obviously we'd all want to do something different (I would find it super creepy to receive many letters following the same template lol), but it's a good place to start a simple draft. It will probably take me a while to actually get around to doing this as I am extremely busy, but I don't mind starting the planning now.
