CB Updates -- We Need Your Help!

Hey Chatterbox, it’s the admins. After the CB went down earlier this year, we’ve been working with the Webmaster to get the CB a shiny new upgrade. We’re in the early stages of info gathering right now, and we need your help!

Please share in the comments anything that you hope for in a new version of the CB. You can suggest brand-new features, but also include anything you really would like to stay the same. We want to consider all possibilities (even if we can't use all of your wonderful ideas) to create the best possible place for you! Comment by May 31st any new (or old!) things you might like in a fresh CB.

We can’t wait to hear from you.

PS. An updated CB does not mean an update to our guidelines, so please know that suggestions that explicitly go against the guidelines will not be considered.

Whoa this is cool! Thank you, Admins! :)

I love everything about the CB so I'm hoping nothing gets deleted, just added to (I had a dream where there were eight new sections of Chattebox...not joking).

I like the pronoun box idea. I also think that maybe the print under the name and location boxes saying "first and last initial" and "general location" could be changed to a CB/not irl name and a fictional or not-actual-place location, because once I figured out someone's irl first and last name, and it's just extremely scary to think that's a possibility. Sealed I also like the captcha update idea...I'm not sure if it works anymore because AI's developed a lot since then.

I'm not sure about the bio/profile/account idea or the direct messaging idea, because I feel like it would make the CB more focused on individual people rather than community. Also, on the http version of CB, Google Chrome constantly reminds me "You should not enter any sensitive information on this site (for example passwords or credit cards), because it could be stolen by attackers." I don't exactly understand what that means, but it makes me sort of nervous...there is an https version of CB that I used to use, but for some reason it wasn't working and so I switched back to the http version (oh, and now it's working again...yay!) I agree with Poinsettia that accounts/profiles would make CB feel more like social media, and that makes me kind of sad because I like seeing how CB hasn't been extremely modernized and I'm sentimental about that.

I'm another CBer who really wants the CB colors to stay the same (because they are perfect!!). I like the idea of titles for threads just like in BaB and love Peri's Main Street Idea.

@Celine, yeah, I see what you're talking about by too many sections...right now I think there are just enough at six. Maybe there could be "Main Street" (would the MCUs go there?), a section for @[insert CBer] that I think someone suggested should be called "Let's Chat!", Games/currently Chirp at Cricket, fandoms (could that be combined with/replace BaB?), AEs, Pudding's Place, and Inkwell (with Kyngdom in its current location). Did I miss any section ideas?

@Peregrine, I love the folder idea! (it's almost like in Kyngdom, where on the main page there are links to the RP Board and Groups) It might be hard, but it'd definitely make things a lot more easier to find!

The Main Street idea Peri suggested sounds great! I'm not rlly sure about accounts, though. It would be cool to have pfps and to prevent impersonators, but idk it would make cricket feel more like a social media site. I would also suggest maybe having the Add new Comment button on the bottom of a thread as well, so you don't have to scroll all the way up after reading something. Being able to send videos would also be cool.

I'd honestly rather not have profiles. When you meet people in person, you probably don't have a piece of paper or something that says "Hello, my name is --, I like this and dislike this..." and so on. I also think that there is some sort of search thing that you type into the space for URLs in your browser, but I don't remember what it is. And different captchas--perhaps "Select the dogs in this tiled grid of pictures" or something similar? The Main Street section sounds helpful, but if there are too many sections, then that could get confusing. And yes, please, keep all the old threads! A pronoun box would be helpful. I think that accounts could make it harder to post if you were short on time, and also it would be difficult to create new accounts, if, say, you're writing a ski lodge under a pseudonym and in two different SIs at the same time.
Thank you, Admins, for letting us be a part of this!

Finally, I have time to add some of my suggestions~

-Not sure about Profiles. It would be nice to have stuff on there enabling quick access to someone's sona to make picturings for them, or info about AEs for AE shipping. And pasword protection against Impostors (Flashback impostor war). That was terrible. But then again that would be very complex for the admins to monitor since they're already very busy, and what about SI's? The CB is the CB, and it's hard to discern what to keep and change when one wants to keep the spirit of the forum intact.

-Fixing the 'second comment' glitch. And the Evil '...' title.

-The ability to upload multiple pictures in the 'My Art' box! And allowing the upload of pictures when a thread is created.

-Search box yesssss! I would love having one to help locate threads of olde times.

-I would wish for a decorative update! I still haven't forgotten Cricket and Ladybug at the bottom of the page, and I think it's about time they get something new to talk about other than marathons and hidden loot. If they can get an update it would be amazing.

-I agree the Captchas are a bit hard every once in a while. What about trying the 'slide bar to complete picture' type captcha? Just a suggestion.

Kyngdom suggestions:

-Rearranging Kyngdom's format? Since it's up to the CBers to keep it running now, perhaps a format update making everything more RP and worldbuilding centered would be welcome. There's a lot of unused sections on the front page currently, like the four power sections and fourthe map fragment and whatnot. If the RP board and Bog and Burrow could be moved higher, everyone might be more intrested in joining. Not to mention making Kyngdom easier to navigate! (I recall that Kyngdom was rearranged to its current appearence around four years ago, so I hope that you could give it a try once more)

-Oh yes! And making Kyngdom into an independent section of the CB instead of a part of Inkwell would help revive it as well! But that's just a suggestion. Kyngdom was the first part of the CB I ever came into contact with, and even if I don't have enough free time to be an active part of it, I do hope that it keeps going strong.

oh, another thing-- could posted pictures be better quality (as in, more pixels), please? also, sometimes pictures come out sideways, maybe somehow that could be fixed.

If there are going to be profiles, I'd definitely ask that they be optional; I still think it would be better to have none, though. As people have pointed out, it makes the CB less welcome and opening, and I also feel like it takes away from its originality - so many websites separate people into individual profiles instead of letting them navigate freely, and I love that the CB doesn't. I also think it might lead to some competition...? e.g. feeling that someone else's profile is cooler than yours, or that yours is cooler than someone else's, etc.

Adding an alternative captcha might be a good idea, but please leave the ones we have right now!! They're such an integral part of the CB <3

I agree with Zeal that an update to Cricket and Ladybug at the bottom might be nice :) And that rearranging Kyngdom would be helpful, considering how its most active sections have changed since the last time it was rearranged.

"Let's Chat" and fandom sections would be great, and a main street could work (especially for ultimate guides and things), but I'd rather the existing sections were kept. They're all fairly active and flexible; even TM is coming back into focus. Anyway, those are my suggestions :)

Maybe the Main Street section could be like a home page for the Chatterbox rather than just a section. Also, I do think Random Thoughts should be left in DtE; I like how it's always the top thread there, and that way it's more conveniently situated when you want to just quickly post something random. I really like the Main Street idea, though!

And I agree with everyone that the old threads and posts should definitely be kept!! I love reading through them, and they encompass so much creativity and originality. Deleting them would mean deleting a whole world. They're part of us and this community, and they hold so much value on their own too. Even just deleting the old posts on the Regular Poetry Thread, for example, would mean that so many masterpieces (the poems on there are some of the best I've ever read, and they've really shaped my own style) could no longer be read; they'd be lost forever. Besides, a lot of people may have posted writing or art on here that they don't have copies of, or want to reread creative works by others, like ski lodges or poetry. A lot of people may also enjoy rereading the conversations they've had with others, like when old CBers come back for the reunions. These posts are all we have of each other; they shouldn't be deleted!

Maybe the Author and Artist Corner could be revived. Of course I don't know if the authors/artists themselves would be up for that, but it was such a cool idea while it lasted! I'd love the chance to chat with some of Cricket's authors if it could be possible :)

I'm kind of neutral about a pronoun box... as CelineBurningBright said, it just kind of increases the stress that many people already feel about their pronouns, and it doesn't add that much as people can already specify their pronouns if they want to. So I would say that's not a top priority for me personally. But it's not like I'm wildly opposed to it :)

....stress? i don't think the pronouns box would be required in order to make a comment?

No, you're right. It's just that if you're questioning (or even if you're not), it can be kind of stressful to be reminded at every turn "think about your pronouns, you still haven't figured them out,  that's just one more important thing you need to decide and spend all your time over" and even if a pronoun box wasn't required, it could still have that effect. If it isn't there, people can forget about the issue altogether for a little while. To be honest, I'm not questioning myself so I don't know this from experience, but I've seen so many people even here on the CB stressing out about what pronouns to use; that's what makes me think it would be easier on everyone not to have to think about it at all. But of course those are just my thoughts on it :)

as someone who is very much not sure of their gender/pronouns, I'd say you both have points. There would definitely be some days when being reminded of it would be frustrating, but I would also say that the benefit of knowing other people's pronouns easily would outweigh that, as long as there's an option to not fill it out. a pronouns box is not in my top priorities but also probably wouldn't hurt.

(also I agree with Scuttles that an Open Dyslexic font option might be good)

*gasps* yes, look, it's actually North Star, who hasn't been around the cb in literal ages and who's probably been forgotten about by everyone. hey, lizards, i'm ~back~ for a couple of days.

it's slightly sad that we're updating. i'd also say probably no on profiles. the chatterbox doesn't feel like a very profile-y place? and pronoun boxes would be ok, but i'd def prefer that they're optional, and it doesn't feel like absolute priority. omg please please keep the old posts/threads, they're hilarious and amazing and creative and we'd lose so much if we lost them! literally, they always make me happy if i'm down (and even if i'm not down)

fixing the sideways-picture glitch is a great idea, if that's possible.

thank you sm to admins and webmaster for giving your time and thoughts to this and asking us about it!

A pronouns box, an update to the topping algorithm so that pages don't get bottomed after the first comment, an image-based captcha alternative (for those with reading/sight related disabilities), a title box for threads (instead of just using the first line), maybe a search function. Those are the things that come to mind first, I'll probably have a few more ideas over the next few days. Pass my thanks along to the webmaster!

Also maybe an option to put the website in Open Dyslexic font?

Sorry for the third comment, keep thinking of more ways to make CB more accessable. I like the CB colors the way they are, but I think a high contrast option could be another handy feature.
