Chatterbox: Crowd Sorcery

What are your favorite types of fantasy worlds? What kind of setting would you most like for our Crowd Sorcery story?

1. Medieval European-like: This is the setting of most fairy tales we know--kings, queens, knights, castles . . .

2. Original Fantasy Land: This is harder to do, because the land will be less familiar to readers--a land that's not like a real place or time period on Earth--but it can be lots of fun! Anything becomes possible, but we'd have to work all the harder at developing the world.

3. Classical World: How about a story in a fantasy Greece or Rome in the time of the gods, goddesses, and monsters like the Hydra, the Cyclops, or the Chimaera?

4. Not-So-Distant Past: What about a story in the era of carriages, lanterns, top hats, and maybe a dirigible or two?

5. Urban Fantasy: Would you like to see a story set in the modern world, but with fantasy elements?

6. Future: Maybe you enjoy future settings, when the world is a little or a lot different from the way it is today. If you choose this option, then try to decide on near future or far-distant future.

Others: Do you have a strong feeling about some other setting that isn't mentioned here? Let us hear about it!

Hey, Fred! I have a question.

Is this the last one of these you are making or will there be more?

Greetings from the Place of Wonder!

It's very hard to write a good background for your characters without a setting! I made mine set in a famine, poverty-stricken country with many magical creatures such as elves.

Ohh! One of my favorite book series of all times(The 13 Treasures Trilogy) is an Urban Fantasy. I also like Medieval-European-Like and Original Fantasy Land stories, but the others sound like a bunch of fun too. ^~^

I think the Medieval European-like is very story esk, but I think it would be cool if you combined it with the Future so it's like something happened that launched the human/magical races back to using medieval materials. The cause of that could be a huge part of the story.

I think it would be neat to have a mix of medieval and original fantasy! Maybe have a few made up creatures and some dragons.

Medieval European-like is my favorite. I will not ever stop trying to write stories in the setting. not that they're very good, but will probably not stop trying to write them :)

I think not-so-distant past would fit in the best, but fantasy land is reallly cool too!

My favorite kind of fantasy world has to be a mix between Original Fantasy World and Not-So-Distant-Past known as "steampunk". It's a sort of historical science fiction about a world that never existed.

Steampunk is a world set in Victorian England, but with a decided mechanical twist. While there's dresses of lace, and upright manners (of course, you're not limited to Victorian civility; there's plenty of ragged street rabble, slightly daft mad scientists and leather-clad 'ordinary' rebels to go around), there are also gears, machines, mechancal menageries, dirigibles and airships, and nearly everything's steam-powered. There might be a few digiscreens about, but everything really revolves around good, old-fashioned mechanics.

Steampunk worlds are a personal favorite of mine because they give the author a loosely-structured time period and an idea of setting to be used as a jumping-off point, while not limiting the imagination any. For example, if you chose a historical setting, such as Greek, Roman, or Renaissance, you'd probably be limited to only the technology and ideas they had back then (such as horses and carts and polytheism) whereas original fantasy settings like steampunk give you free range to invent whatever machine or newfangled robot you might wish (even a time machine, if you really want that gladiator).

I would love to read a story set in a steampunk era because it's an intriguing place to be, since you get that nostalgic feel without having to be limited by historical facts. Also, steampunk-set books are few and far between in popular literature.

P.S. To anybody who takes the time to read this: thank you!!

Being odd in this way, I feel that combinding 1, 2, 5, and 6 would provide a quite remarkable challenge that would provide exceedingly fun. Combining a mix of past, present, future and the completely unknown would challenge all expectations of doing one or the other. There could be regions that could seem to start of in one time, then turn drastically into their opposite. I find that this challenge of when and where we are could prove a confusing to the charactors as to us, which could be quite a bit entertaining.

I think you have a good point -- that would be a lot of fun, AND give the writer a lot of leeway to make the story into anything they felt like. Perhaps the setting could be a bit of the plotline itself, having the hero/ine (I forgot who the hero turned out to be) travel through all these regions on a grand adventure.

I like original fantasyland best. It would be so much fun  to create a completely new land. And there would be no restrictions.

I personally think that the Original Fairy Land mixed with the medieval times with all with the dragons and fairies and Knights is the best because everybody's sounds fairy land and medieval to me.
