Duolingo! Atentio

Duolingo! Atention Duolingo learners! (Well, if there are any...)

This is a thread to talk about duolingo (What level are ya'll on? Which languages are you learning?), other language learning programs (or school or co-op classes, obviously), traveling abroad, and any current foreign language aspirations. You may post about Foreign Language Learning (FLL) struggles and difficulties, FLL joys and triumphs, and any time you actually got to use your FL skills.

I am learning French with duolingo, and am on level 6. I tried Rosetta Stone in 6th and 7th grades for Spanish, but I just never felt like I really learned anything with it. I can't stand when I feel like I'm just doing stuff to have done it and I don't really gather any real-world knowledge. Duolingo has been stunning (and I'm sure it would be a wonderful supplement for school classes)! I feel like I've learned more phrases and words in a month or so with duolingo that I did with literally years of RS. I have not had the chance to talk to anyone who actually speaks French (sadly), and my only previous background with French was Muzzy when I was 3 or 4. After using duolingo with such success and enjoyment, I think I might also try the Spanish Duo program someday soon!

Well , I'm half Hispanic and I live like 5 hours from the Mexican border , so as you can tell , the area I'm in is mostly populated with Hispanic people .

So I know A LOT of Spanish just from hearing it often .. I'm also almost done with level 2 in Rosetta Stone ( I don't like it . It's too simple . I'm looking to learn to be fluent in Spanish . I've learned more from my dad ( who is fluent in English , Spanish and even knows a bit of German and Portugese ) and my surroundings than from this stupid thing ) and I have the Duolingo app on my phone .

It's really great ! So far it hasn't taught me much because I already know so much ( I mean I can understand almost everything I hear . I just can't speak back -.- ) but it's simple and it makes me think ! I like it a lot !

I'm hoping that by the time I graduate I will be fluent in Spanish ...

I'm learning Spanish now from books and my mom wants to get Rosetta Stone, but is Duolingo better? I've got to say the idea of free is a lot more attractive than the $500 you have to pay for the RS program. :/ If you've got any feedback on the pros and cons of both that would be great!

Wow! This Duolingo thing sounds awesome. So, do you just download the app and then learn any language you want? Or is there more to it? I would love to learn Spanisch and Italian.

Yep, it's as simple as that! They have both Spanish and Italian.

@ Everinne: I have never tried RS, but Duo is amazing. It does have a few mistakes here and there in the lessons, but it is so effective. RS will teach you a lot of vocabulary, but Duo will teach you vocab and how to make sentences, bringing you much closer to fluency.

@ Elizabeth: If you prefer, you can also use the website rather than the app. The site is a bit different from the app, because they've added a few new features recently, but it's the same on the term of lessons (if this is wrong, someone please correct me.). Also, they currently have only Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and English from all of the languages mentioned above. They also have beta versions of French to Spanish speakers, German for Russian speakers, French for German speakers, Portuguese for Spanish speakers, and English for Polish, Greek, Indonesian, Turkish, Japanese, Hindi, Romanian, Dutch, Russian, and Hungarian speakers. The betas are full of mistakes and are not close to perfect yet, however. They're also working on other languages, including some more for English speakers!

I just started it with German and Spanish (even though I learn Spanish in school) and I'm level two for each.
