Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Sleep.I know

Sleep.

I know we've had this thread before, but I want to start another.

Okay, I don't know if something's wrong with me, but I CAN'T fall asleep at night. I've tried so many suggestions. I listen to soft music, read, only use my bed for sleeping, go to bed at the same time every night, don't watch screens or have caffeine, and don't eat anything spicy. IT DRIVES ME INSANE!! I'll lie there for hours, just tossing and turning. I'm exhausted, but I can't fall asleep! I'm tempted to take sleeping pills, but I don't want to rely on them. And you know what's weird? For a few weeks, this will continue, then all of a sudden, it will stop. I'll start going to sleep really fast. After a couple of weeks, I can't fall asleep. And so it continues.

Does anyone have this problem? My mom says it might be because my body is changing, but I don't know. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah I've gone through/have this problem, which is why I now label myself as an insomniac. It infuriates my mom, cause I normally don't fall asleep till anywhere from twelve to three am.

I understand your not wanting to take sleep inducers. (Another thing that infuriates my mom is my stark aversion to any sort of medication, even simple allergies pills or pain killers.) But if you're really having this much trouble, try taking something like a Tylenol PM. These are supposed to be non-addictive. Try taking them just a couple times, enough to get a few nights of going to sleep at the same time regularly, and it might help.

What I do when I can't sleep is instead of letting my mind wander off anywhere, I focus it in a particular direction. Thing is about me, I CAN'T let my mind relax. Somehow for some weird reason that just winds me up. I HAVE to keep thinking to tire myself out. So I think on stories, plots, and create things in my mind. It keeps me from thinking on school, life, activities, anything that could even remotely stress me out. I can think on any sort of plot, from sad to exciting to scary to comforting, and it all just tires me out. I have NO clue why, it just does. So maybe it would work for you. I dunno.

And if worse comes to it, you could ask your parents to get a doctor's appointment, and they could tell you if there's anything in particular that might keep you awake. Like maybe something in your diet that you would never think of, or maybe even a mild medicine to help you sleep until your body is used to it.

Anyway, your mom honestly is probably right, that your body is just changing and it's just a faze. Either way, I hope your able to conquer this soon, and get a good night's sleep!

Something else to try: Read a boring book.

Thanks so much, BHR! I have actually tried taking some Benedryl (did I spell that right?) before bed, and I take it for a few nights until I'm on a regular schedule.

Another thing I did. My sister and I share a bunk bed, and I sleep at the top. We switched beds, and now I fall asleep super fast! I don't know why, but it works!

Thanks again for your help!

Your few weeks on/few weeks off reminds me of this thing my teacher told me that I didn't really believe in. Our bodies sleep differently when the moon changes, so when a moon cycle is at a certain point, the body is able to sleep easier.

What have you tried to get yourself to sleep? (Try and turn off electronics an hour before you try and go to bed, don't eat or drink caffine or sugar in the evening, and try to have a routine to go through to tell your body that it's time to go to sleep.)

Oiy vey......

Last night 4 moi.....

Once upon a time I was reading pjo at 10:30 when my dad told me to go to sleep, and I was all like "NOOOOO!!!!!!!! AT THE BEST PART!!!!!!!!!" so iIgot a flashlight and read for another hour. Then I tried to fall asleep, but simply couldn't, so I acted out the last 2 hr of reading with me as  Annabeth, and a stuffed bear as Percy, but then I realized that there are more then 2 charactors in dat book, so i frantically looked around for another good stuffed animal. I got good ones 4 Rachel and Grover, but then I was all like "Oh my gosh i need TYSON!!" So I used only what I could. A giant stuffed unicorn that barely fits on  my bed. He is bigger then the rest of em... Acting Challenge!!! (jazz hands). Once I was done, I sang the whole deluxe Taylor Swift album twice, and daydreamed about dounuts. It was a little late after I sang nintey nine bottles of beer on the wall 3 times, and the nyan cat song for what seemed like centeries, but I fell asleep!!!! Yay!!! Of course the next morning I woke up supa early, sang nyan cat some more, and didnt feel tired at all though. That's just me. No-sleep Savvy. Sorry, but I can't help u.

I'm an insomniac, so, yeah. What I do is I read, into the wee hours of the night (till four or five am), or do something to entertain myself. Like go on the Chatterbox (That is why you see posts from me, that say three am), YWP, Camp Nano, YouTube, other stuff. One night, I literally was awake till my eight thirty alarm went off. I slept zero hours, and had a test. Sometimes tea, and a hot shower help.

Oh yeah, JOIN THE CLUB. I read, go on Chatterbox, go to PBS kids and watch episodes of Wild Kratts (yes, I'm more than 6 yrs old and I watch Wild Kratts; don't judge)... it drives mom NUTS. I am SOOO not supposed to do it, but I do it anyway, which is why I also post at 3 am. 12:00-6:00 are my favorite hours to be under the covers with just my stuffed animal (a cat), my iPad, and myself... and mom is in bed at that time so PERFECT TIMING.

You wake up at 8:30?!? LUCKY!!

I used to have that problem, not as much as you guys, the latest I would be up at was 12, but.... yeah, it was really annoying. But then I got my own room and I went to sleep fine! (maybe I was kept awake because my brother snores like a hippopotumus; okay, he doesn't snore, but he breathes like Darth Vader).
