Nerd Conflict

Nerd Conflict

So  what do you think of the word Nerd?

Do you prefer Geek, or insist, like my mother, that  nerds rule the world? that is, after our uniiqueness is conitinously attempeed to be stifled?

So, thoughts???

I must say, I am a nerd and I am proud! I don't think of the word "nerd" as offensive, or mean, although I prefer "fangirl". I have gotten to the point where when someone calls me a nerd, I take it as a compliment. There is absolutely nothing wrong with liking books or tv shows or movies. I am very proud to be nerd.

I'm pretty much a nerd, but more in the classic sense. I like using computers and I wear glasses and the dentists says I'll probably get braces. O.o But hey! The new glasses I picked out are nerd shaped!

Tbh, I don't like putting titles on ppl, either, but I don't mind if someone calls me a nerd. I don't really say "Thank you," but rather, "Oh yeah, that's funny."

If you ask me, geek I think is used more as an adjective and nerd as a noun.

Honestly, I rather consider myself a nature nerd. I love learning about animals.

I don't know where I got this idea but I always think of nerd as more along the lines of braces, glasses, and kind of brainy and more interested in academics than sports or popularity, while geek is more computer-y, if you know what I mean. (by the way, I qualify for both categories under my definitions). I don't usually like giving people titles like that, even myself, as they often can be used to make fun of someone, but hey, if nerds rule the world then I'm up for it!

Personally, I don't like calling other people "nerds" because I'm afraid it might hurt someone else's feelings. I also don't like calling people nerds, because it's considered "labeling" and I don't like to judge others by labels.

As for me, I'm ok with calling myself a nerd, and I'm proud of it. I mean, we all have a little bit of nerdiness in us somewhere right?

Preferance between nerd and geek: Both words are cool, and I don't care if I'm called either a nerd or geek.

I just don't even care. Nerd is more pleasing to my ears. I always call myself an "editor nerd" and it is for the most part true.

I think that both words are stereotypical and shouldn't be used. Maybe it's just because I'm Asian, but I hate the fact that I'm supposed to be smarter than everyone else, because my eyes are small. There are many white people much smarter than me, and I don't like that I'm expected to be better.

In the Oscars, a cruel joke was played portraying stereotypical Asian, children at that. They mocked child labor and the Asian stereotype all together!

The terms "nerd" and "geek" are offensive, they are prejudiced, and they put large boxes around people that they can't escape.

But they can! They can if we stop prejudice.

As another Asian, I must say I disagree with you, Mei-xue. I self-identify as a nerd. Personally, I'd say that you should never call anyone something they don't want to be called. I like being called a nerd, a geek, a fangirl, an overachiever.

My image is that geeks are members of the big fandoms: Doctor Who, Star Wars, Harry Potter, World of Warcraft. Nerds love learning and are enthusiastic about life (may I refer you to the great John Green). Fangirls can be both, but specifically girls and specifically superexcited.

Of course, this is just me. I totally see why nerdiness and geekiness might be politically incorrect terms. If you think someone might not want to be identified that way, don't call them that!

I personally don't mind being called "geek" but I agree with Air in that you shouldn't call people things they don't want to be called. I beleive that "geek" can mean having a love of learning or just being really into something. For example, when I was in Lake Tahoe with this girl, Zoe and her family, we watched a show on the American Revolution called Liberty's Kids. My mom said something like "I'm glad you have someone to be geeky with." We stayed up late at night watching that show. On the other hand, recently when I think we were walking to the car from the theater in which we viewed Boy and the World, my mom said, "We're like the GKIDS geeks." GKIDS protains to Art house films for family like Spirited Away, Ponyo, Boy and the World, Song of the Sea, etc.

Well, I still don't like grouping people together.

#DownWithPrejudice

I hate that "nerds" have specific traits, like all nerds get As, or all nerds have glasses.

And something innocent like, "All Chinese are short" could turn into, "All Muslims are bad". Even Taylor Swift said that she doesn't like labels. She said it stifles your creativity.

Oh my gosh Air! Are you Asian also? This . . . this is incredible! I must stop myslef from becoming over-excited!

Ahem.

Mei-Xiu: You are absolutely right! People like that should't be grouped together. I would never call someone a nerd/geek, even if they said it's okay. I don't even like saying that thing how people's colors are organzied (you know, white, black).

And not all Asains are short or have small eyes! I've seen lots of Asians that are tall (including myself, as my parents say). O.o

I AM A GEEK!! Ahem. Sorry, but let me straighten this out for you guys. Au least how I think of it.

Nerds  vs.  Geeks

Nerds, are of the academic profession. Straight A's, yeah, that whole lot. You know, I almost might be a nerd as well … THIS IS SCARY!

Geeks, are people who read a lot and play geeky games such as King of Tokyo, Pokémon, Munchkin (my personal fav), or Magic: The Gathering.

See? Aren't we all nerds AND geeks?

Did you guys know that Donald Trump asked an Asian fifth-grade girl, "Besides studying, what can you do?" Yep, he literally discriminated against someone like that. He also refused to touch her, along with refusing to touch a Latin American child.

I can do much more than studying. I can do anything I want.

And I don't care if being a nerd is a compliment. I am against any sort of grouping people up.
