Piano playing
How many of you guys play piano? How many do the National Piano Evaluations thingy where someone goes to your piano school and you play something for them? And, which level? I'm Intermediate Section C.
Also, what piece(s) are you guys currently playing?

Yeah, like you said, you did algebra at 6?! And I thought Coco was really smart. She's doing Algebra at 9. I was doing fractions. No wait, that was 8. What was I doing at nine ...?

@ Pearl:

Could you take a picture of some of the algebra that you did? Also, can you show me what you're doing now? You seem so smart, I'd bet two weeks of my allowance that you're doing calculus…

Well, I don't have a camera, but right now I'm planning my little sister's birthday party. I've made her a beautiful card, and I just know she'll love it. I was thinking of writing it in Italian, but she wouldn't be able to translate it.

Hey Pearl! :D

Speaking from personal experience, when people told you you weren't practicing or commiting yourself enough, when your schedule hadn't changed, they weren't trying to be unjust or embarrassing. Your schedule when you are very young and are just starting out, or have only been playing a few years is going to be different from the schedule you'll need to advance. Just having a natural knack for something doesn't ensure one's success or mean that you don't need practice-- actually, it means you should practice more to improve and use your talent. I have been told the same things people have told you-- and, in my experience, they were quite right. Even Mozart had to practice-- and if a once-in-the-history-of-the-world musical genius like Mozart had to practice, I'd say we should too! ;)

Yes, Cho!!!!! I'm glad someone else has heard of the Piano Guys :D :D :D :D :D
Are we allowed to hear the long story of your Piano Past? Or is that private? I'm sorry, I have this natural knack (one that certainly doesn't need practice) of vocalizing my inquiries in such a way as to make them sound like demands. You don't have to answer if you don't like :)

Okay, here I go.

The organist at our church was an amazing lady. She was teaching Coco and me piano, along with one other homeschooled kid. She was so nice, she didn't want us to pay her! Then, she moved up to Virginia. Coco and I continued to work at our piano as well as we could.

Then, we got Liam. He's our no-longer-new-adorable baby brother! So, I started helping Mama out a lot, and I didn't have any more time for piano. Then, our dryer caught on fire. Nobody was hurt, but the smoke got into everything. And I mean everything. So we had to move out of our house for about three months and stayed in a beach house.

(That's when I started Cricket!) When we came back, I no longer needed to help with Liam, but all my spare time had been transferred to writing and Cricket. I can almost play all of the Imperial March!

So exactly how much should an eight year old practice? Isn't an hour a day AND additional practicing when I feel bored enough? Also, I had clearly stated for years and years since before I started piano that I WANTED TO BE A DOCTOR. I had also talked with my father about what I was going to do when I grew up. And he told me that although it took some time, I would eventually figure out what I wanted to be. Then all of a sudden everyone in my family is spreading rumors about me giving up piano and telling me that I'm too lazy?

I play piano, I think I have been for four or five years. I use the Piano Adventures books (which I previously thought were not very well-known, but I was proved wrong), and I'm on level 4. I'm pretty excited about that because it actually has some nonabridged songs and all those arranged pieces were driving me mad! I'm sure I could play actual, classical, nonabridged songs if given time.

But right now, since my piano teacher's annual recital is coming up, I'm straying out of the book (we do that a lot) and playing "All the Rowboats" by Regina Spektor while singing with it (which I was rather nervous about at first, but I don't think I am now). It definitely wasn't meant for just piano, but it's pretty easy to make it into a piano piece. The toughest part has been a bunch of eighth-note octaves to 120-140 bpm, but I'm getting there.

And I'm yammering. Sorry.

I play the flute and used to play piano! My fav. song to play is "Old McDonald Had A Farm", Chopstixs and Popcorn Prelude (flute/full band).
