Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Oh dear! I'm

Oh dear! I'm terribly scared right now!!! Has anybuggy heard of a virus? THEY ARE CREEPY!!!!!!! And you know how they spread wildly right? Well, someone in MN got one! AAAAAAHHHHH! Most of the schools down by where that person lives closed down! It's scary! Lucky for me, I don't live near there. But what happened to her was that she saw someone from Mexico, where most of it is, and she kind of... got it? So now my science teacher is telling us alll about them, and I'm sitting there scared to death because I don't want them in my body! AHHHH! I'm scared everybuggy!

Maggie, I heard a report today that said that most people will NOT get the virus, and of those who do, many will not be very sick and will recover just fine. Some already have. You should just take normal precautions: stay home if you're sick, call the doctor if you have a high fever, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands.

First of all, whoever said that the media likes to dramatize things was right. And second, sure, it could turn into something massive and deadly, but my opinion is that if God wants me to get sick, no precautions I take will stop it, and if God wants me to stay healthy, breathing in nothing but what people with swine flu exhale won't get me sick. What I'm saying is this: if you believe in God, trust him to do what is ultimately best for you, because he has the long-term point of view. If that entails you getting sick, that is, somehow, part of his millenia-long plan for all of the universe. If you don't believe in God or don't believe that He's interested in people, I can't help you and I'll pray for you.

Dudes, do you know how many people have died in Mexico already?  I think we should take this a bit more seriously.

In Mexico City, where swine flu originated, there are roughly 8,000,000 people. About 2,000 of them have been infected with swine flu. That's roughly .0025% chance of contracting swine flu in Mexico City. Chances are even lower in the U.S. and Canada.

If swine flu is going to be a problem, it is going to be a problem next season, if it mutates and becomes more contagious and more deadly (the kids who originally got it in that school in NY are either better or very close to being better.)

At the moment, however, in countries with the means to effectively treat a great range of illnesses, many more serious than the flu, are not going to have much of a problem with mass death. If the swine flu bacteria mutates, however, yes, we will have a problem. That's why we're trying to find a vaccine.

TNO, I would think it a problem if, like, two people died in the whole of Mexico, but the number is . . . *runs off to check* 46!  46 people died!  I know how most people who contacted the flu in countries other than Mexico are fine, but I still think we should stay up-to-date and do the regular blah blah blah precautions, cover mouth, wash hands, blah.  And ESPECIALLY if it mutates and comes back next year.

I heard about the swine flu!!!  Kind of creepy, but I doubt it'll ever make its way to Maine.  But I don't know about the rest of ya...  Hehe, you know the expression 'when pigs fly'??  Well, . . . when swine flu!!!!! :) Okay, that's sort of freaky now that I look at it.... :)

Yeah, that Swine Flu thing . . . *shivers* Paige, it's bigger than that--it's reached New York City and Toronto already. In the US, a toddler already died . . . *shivers* I think we're safe, though. One good thing about living on top of a mountain is that you don't come in close contact with too many people. *smiles weakly* I sure hope it blows over.

Maybe, someday soon, doctors will make medicine that will help! My dad said that I can't get a swimming pool in my room 'till I see a flying pig. So I think now I'm going to take a picture of a pig and and A effects! hehehe
