Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Let me take

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to strawberry fields!

Or I could be coming to this thread!

So, I've seen a lot of talk (myself included) about people not knowing all the CBers around. And I realized a simple way to fix this. Yep, this is the official GET TO KNOW YOU CHAT THREAD!

Anyone can post here, from people who've been on the CB for years and years to those who joined a week ago. All are welcome, as I'd love to get to know as many of you as I can!

Here are the rules.

On your first post on this thread, start with a summary of yourself. Talk about anything! How old you are, if you play an instrument, how many siblings you have, what your favorite color is-- the possibilities are endless.

Every couple of days, I'll post a topic question. Then we respond to it with our answer, and discuss it, exchanging opinions and stories!

NUMBER ONE RULE: DO NOT DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD DISRESPECT ANOTHER PERSON. This is not a debate thread. If you disagree with what someone has said, state your opinion politely or inquire why they said what they did. If they don't want to talk about it, don't push them. This is a getting-to-know-you, not a find-every-fault-in-your-reasoning.

I'll kick it off!

As most of you know, I'm St.Owl. I'm twelve-- thirteen in March-- and in seventh grade. I live in NYC and I have a little brother who will most likely be eleven by the time this is posted. I also have the most adorable husky mix by the name of Bluebell who will have spent a full year with us come March. I play the piano and sing, and I've been promised violin lessons, hopefully to come soon. My favorite bands/artists are probably the Beatles, The Head and the Heart, Regina Spektor, The Punch Brothers, David Bowie, and Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons. And, last but not least, I'm currently in my third year with the CB!

Here's our first question:

What did you do on Valentine's Day? Even if you just got a bunch of candy from your classmates or hung up some velvet hearts, tell me about it! Maybe you were lucky and spent time with that special someone, or perhaps you just got a lovely valentine from a good friend.

I'm rambling, so . . . type away!

Helloo! I'm Bluebird- a scatterbrained girl with too many ideas and too little time. I just turned 13 this January (woo!) and I've almost been on the CB for a year. I love everything and am always changing, but a few things have stuck with me over the years, such as my love of art, reading, writing, the color blue, and rainy days. You can ask my mom's friend who cuts my hair- every time I want it different, it seems like. (at the moment, my hair is pixie cut short- I want to go even shorter, but my parents won't let me). I get off topic A LOT, as you can tell.

I have a younger sister, Lydia, who can be a huge pest at times but is still awesome. I have a black lab/pyrenees mix named Pepper, an orange cat named Tiger (wow, I was so creative with names) and another cat named Fritzi. I live in IL, and go to a tiny tiny Catholic school with less than 150 kids for Pre-K through 8. This is sort of off topic, but two of my friends who go to school with me became official U.S. citizens today! (They were adopted from The Phillipines) It's pretty exciting. I play softball (catcher), volleyball (middle), and basketball (guard), and the clarinet and piano. I am by no means a talented musician, but the piano is fun to play and I can usually make a song sound decent after a while.

I like alternative music and pop music, (esp. Fall Out Boy, Twenty One Pilots, Halsey, Sia, Melanie Martinez, PVRIS, Janet Devlin, Hands Like Houses, and more) but I like a handful of songs from other genres, too. I'm also  a bit obsessed with Dan and Phil.

A few other random facts about me:

~I am 5' 7''

~I love fuzzy socks and wear them under my high tops sometimes (don't tell anybody)

~I DESPISE BEING COLD

~I am Catholic and part of a pretty religious family, but I believe in equal rights for all people.

~I have braces and glasses (but my braces are coming off soon. Woo hoo!)

~I'm getting into animation and poetry??? Never thought this day would come.

~I get flustered pretty easily.

On Valentine's day, I was shipping two of my friends with their 'boyfriends'. It was really cute omg, my friend's crush got her a cute stuffed dog and a Dr. Pepper, and she got him candy. *cue fangirl noises* My other friend's crush gave her a card that said her present wasn't there yet. I'm not into that kind of stuff, so I was okay with just eating cookies at our class party while this boy in my class was telling me about his cannibal chickens and the time he stepped in cow poop. (don't ask, my class is weird) I got some candy which I have already eaten. (That's another thing- I love chocolate!)

OmGosh! You like FOB, TØP, Halsey and PVRIS?? Me too!! Sorry those are just some of my all time favorites. AND DAN AND PHIL?! *screams* I'm not alone! Did you watch PINOF 8 yet? It's hilarious. Ok I'm gonna stop fangirling now... Bye...

St, this is a great idea! So, for my intro...

I am 13 now, and in 8th grade. I LOVE reading, drawing rubik's cubes, painting, outdoors, and  nature. I play piano and recorder. I used to have a hamster, but he got sick and died:( I might start learnig the flute this year! I take gymnastics and I love it!.

Is there any other Cber out there who can solve a rubik's cube?? I can do it in 53 seconds!

@Mei: That sounds like an excellent goal to me! I'm okay with math, enough to be in an honors class, but I'd never shoot for an award. That takes guts!

@elementgirl: Competitive sailing sounds cool! I've never heard of it. What do you do?

@Ashlee: I wish I had the guts to just dance. xD  The one time I really let myself do a bit of dancing was when I was alone in the house and had just won NaNo. Otherwise, I get really self-conscious (it doesn't help that I'm in a class with a ton of dance talent girls who find doing a split more comfortable than sitting) and can't really do anything. I love singing, though.

That's an unbelievably small environment! My school has about a thousand kids just for three grades! It might be fun going to a school like that, though (I get uncomfortable when too many people know me by name, but I like to be able to recognize faces).

@Claaws: Vegas would be amazing to go to, minus the smoking and gambling! (which is unrealistic, because that's what makes Vegas Vegas.) Did you do any sightseeing while you were there?

@Booksy: I bet you'd be really good at historical fiction, reading so much Jane Austen! What time period are you trying to write?

I feel you about the dreaming. xD  Unfortunately, wishing and reality are two very different things . . .

@LilyPad: I used to have a friend online who lived in Australia! By the time you posted, it wasn't Valentine's Day here, either.

Holy cow, five minutes? How close do you live to your school?

@Ember: I didn't know you were a Whovian! (there we go, one day in and learning things already.) That's great! Another person to fangirl with! xD

It's really responsible of you to do all those chores. I must say I admire you for that.

@BrownBear: Tell your brother challenge excepted. xD  I'm surprised you get along so well with him! I can't stand being in the same room with my brother for more than ten minutes.

@Danie: YASS SABLEYE PREACH DARLIN'

@Nebula: Yay, a Wholockian! I'm pretty sure the Doctor gave you that sticker just to creep you out. The cows will be coming soon. (have you seen the mailing system? I'm surprised he even got the sticker to you.)

@Riddler: I am sure you will be a valuable companion when the world is overrun by wolves with tye dye name tags, mutant peavers, and Peppa Pig. This leads up to the next question-- what are the things you feel strongly about that would make you want to be an activist?

@Bluebird: I would be . . . terrified as a catcher, haha. I tried to play catcher when I was in second grade or so and never did it again. How do you handle it?

@Dandelion: That's pretty impressive! I can solve one side of a Rubik's cube really quickly, but not the whole thing. Do you have any tricks?

I think I got everyone! Thanks so much for participating! Since I'm pretty sure no one else has posted after Dandelion, I'm going to start a new question. If you joined too late to answer the first one, you can answer it anyway! Answer any of the questions anytime, really.

Next Question: In prep for reading The Little Prince, my creative writing class talked about our MOCs: Matters of Consequence. These are things you feel strongly about or really matter in your life, like family or love. What are your MOCs and why?

I've been trying to write some stuff set during World War I. That was my NaNo novel, but unfortunately if face-flopped miserably. Mybe I should give it another try. What genres do you all like to write? Also, just out of sheer curiosity, any of you all know your MBTI types? I'm an INFJ-T.

Ooh, that sounds interesting. I would say that my MOCs would deffinetly be empathy, understanding, education, love, family, and friends. Empathy and understanding can move mountains.  If people only bothered to be a little empathetic more often, the world would be a much better place. Also, education can provide a much better world-view, and I want a good education not only for myself, but for everyone in the world. Again, I think it's one of the most important things for a person. And of course, love for my family and friends is a big part of who I am.

What are your MOCs, St?

Yes, I am indeed a Whovian! Who's your favorite Doctor and companion? I'd have to say mine are the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith and even though she's not a proper companion, River Song.

Thank you so much! You just made my day! I mean, it's not every day I get told that I'm admired by one of the people I look up to. So, thanks!

@St.Owl, I love dancing! But I am really not that good and I get kinda shy about dancing around others. But I dance and sing every breathing moment no one is nearby. That was especially started by my friends whom I went to homecoming with this year. One loves to dance, and he got me dancing a bit there. The other was more shy and quiet and really didn't want to dance. He helped me though because I did a lot to get him dancing, boosting my own self confidence.

And being in a small environment is good and bad. I know everyone personally, but I get really awkward walking down halls because everyone knows me.

@Danie, my friend (he's in... 5th or 6th grade) can do an advanced Rubik's in a matter of seconds. I'd have to ask him again, but I believe he gets well under 30 seconds each time. But I cannot do it at all! No matter how long or allow I go.

I never really thought about it, but my MOCs are probably around family, life, religion, love, peace., and equality. Family just means a lot to me, growing up in a close knit, large family as a homeschooler most my life. Everything else is what makes life life and makes it fair. I really cannot offer much explanation there!

Note: Sorry for typos/punctuation because I am typing on my kindle instead of my laptop right now.

Hi, I'm Embers in the Ashes. I'd rather not post my age, gender, nor where I live for privacy reasons. However I will post that I play the clarinet in the school band, I've been in all school plays open to me, and I'm an avid author and songwriter. I have a younger sister whom I love more than the sun, a cat with attitude, and an adorable rescue dog mutt. The cat's Little Miss Sunshine and the dog's Junebug. I enjoy creating/learning/retelling school legends, singing, reading, acting, writing, drawing, painting, and playing games that involve hiding, running, imagining and dodgeballs. Musicwise, I enjoy showtunes, most 80s rock and Taylor Swift. I'm an extreme nerd, and it's my first year on the CB.

Hello! I'm Applejaguar The Perpetually Late. Oh, that's a fun title. I think that everything in the world has a sort of beautiful meaning. I worry about what people think of me, mostly that they think I'm a bully. I love school and I am pretty good at academics (playing sports and managing my time are whole other stories). I love to write and read, but lately I've gotten lazy. I often notice grammatical errors and enjoy learning about grammar but I dislike the term "grammar nazi" because I'm Jewish and the Nazis are not a thing to be taken lightly. I love to thing and I want to be a philosopher when I grow up, if they still exist. I get anxious sometimes. There's a lot more to me, but since I am only inside myself and can't get out as an observer, you'll have to figure it out yourself. Oh, and I love to sing and act, but I'm not very good at dancing. Oh, and I love words.

I'm an only child who used to play the saxophone but I'm taking a break. I also enjoy rock climbing (but I'm not too good at it because I think too much). I like to think of myself as an activist-- I'm certainly interested in making the world a better place where all people have a say in the way it works, and I go to a lot of rallies. I'm Jewish, but I'm a nonbeliever.

On Valentine's day I watched school drama unfold. I got a valentine from a very kind friend and three lolipops from various human beings.

One of my MOCs is The Way People Are Percieved. I hate when people have misconceptions about others, and I'm constantly worrying about whether I'm able to see the entirety of my friends or if I'm mistaken. I also wonder about what people think I am. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by MOCs, but I think about it a lot. Another one is honesty. I try to always be honest, and I hate it when people lie. I also hate stories about people who trust blindly and are decieved.

Hi! I'm September, I'm thirteen, I'm in seventh grade, and I live in California. My birthday is in September. (Oh, the irony!) I play violin, although I used to play piano and flute. I love musical theater, but I have terrible stage fright. .  but I'm considering signing up for a musical theater class next year. I adore Hamilton, In the Heights, Wicked, Little Shop of Horrors, and Chicago. I'm also a huge book nerd, as you've probably already figured out. My favorite series include: Six of Crows, the Shadowhunter Chronicles, and An Ember in the Ashes. I play volleyball (setter/libero). I joined my school's debate team, which has helped me a ton with public speaking, and now I'm super obsessed with debate! I've always wanted a dog or cat, but alas, I'm allergic to the majority of fluffy animals. I'm hoping for a rabbit, though! My Myers-Briggs personality type is ENFJ, but I consider myself more of an ambivert. And finally, I've been on the CB for a little less than a year.

My MOCs are probably truth, equality, forgiveness, and trust. I feel like lying makes it hard to remember the truth. I try to avoid lying as much as possible, but I often come of as blunt because of it. Equality is really important to me, because I often feel underestimated simply because I'm a girl. I'm a feminist :) Forgiveness is probably the most important of my MOCs, becaue I'm a firm believer of second chances. And finally trust— I find it really important to be able to trust people, but sometimes hard to forgive them if they've betrayed my trust. Now that I think about it, a lot of my MOCs go hand in hand. . .

Greetings! I am Esthelle.

I am very devoted to any fictional worlds and characters that spark my fancy. I love the creative process, and my favorite stories are those whose characters are most dynamic--some personalities merging, and some clashing, but all doing something to change the circumstances and people around them. I am very romantic (in the 'idealistic' sense) and I love the wind and the trees and the stars and the moon, and sunlight through the foilage, and waves of grass with crests of light, and the few minutes of thrilling chill when you're crossing a wintery road on your way from one haven to another.

I love to read and write. A good story--or a great one, if you find it-- can take you farther than any screen-show ever could, and to write is to actually shape those depths and distances for yourself. My characters are always growing-- they won't stop for me to write them. But I love to take other people's characters-- those of the TV and Video-game world-- and try and enlarge their personalities. These characters are generally more muted and less deep than those in literature. So I use the qualities that make the characters so likeable or intriguing-- those traits that ring truest-- and build on that, so that everyone stays true to their original form. People do this all the time on a professional level-- when they made "The Adventures of Tintin" stories into a film, for example. It's a lot of fun, and provides a bit of a breather from the struggles of making your own characters. You typically have a lot of sound material to work with already, the moment you decide to expand someone else's creations.

I am of the Mediator personality type. I am very introverted, but I love people and the way they think and act. Everyone's different, and everyone's misinterpreted by everyone else to some extent. We're all little enigmas in the great question of humanity.

I am Lutheran. I believe that Christ died and rose again for the entire world, and I believe in the doctrine of faith alone, apart from works.

I love music and the way it expresses humanity in a way that transcends words. When I hear it I marvel that the thoughts and emotions of people living far away, and long ago, can still be understood by us today, even though we don't speak the composers' languages. I play the pianoforte, and I am getting a little harp to fool around with ('little' being what I can afford.) I also enjoy to read and make poetry-- I think poetry is more successful at expressing deep things than prose, because it is more like music.

I am much attached to the world of Arda, part of which is Middle-Earth. I love the land and it's people, and I tend to give uninvited lectures about it. It makes me unhappy, the way people look at Middle-Earth. On the one hand, I'm glad they take interest in it at all. But on the other (which must be my right hand, as I refer to it more often) I can't stand that people get really into "Elves" when they don't really know what Elves are. I know that it's all right that people don't know, or don't care, or both. It's just that I feel Arda is being slighted somehow-- or that people are missing out on it. Of course it's very ironic, as I rather doubt anyone is encouraged to discover Middle-Earth and Aman when I rant about them. Oh, well.

And that's my 'Disquisition On Self' for the day. :)

My MOCs are easy. Writing and social issues. I'm subscribed to a million different social justice websites (I get a lot of ad mail XD), and I care so deeply about those issues . . . if I wanted, I could write a ten-page rant in all caps about almost any racial topic. My favorite books are ones with racial themes, or centered around race, or both. Zootopia is my all-time favorite movie, obviously, I watched it five times! I think it's super unfair that Asian people are discriminated against and no one knows it . . . like BLM is a national movement, which is great, but what about other people of color?

If I type any more, I'll go into a rant, so I think I'll stop now. :)

Czesc! I'm H.A.B., a 12-year-old weirdo. I live in Pittsburgh but fortunately have managed to avoid adopting the stereotypical "yinzer" accent. I'm homeschooled and during my spare time like to make electronic music and sometimes draw or write (usually intensely self-deprecative) raps / songs.

In music, I like math rock, pretty much all variants of electronica including electro-swing (caravan palace anyone?), and Modest Mouse. Lots and lots of Modest Mouse. I used to be big on emo stuff like Fall Out Boy and TØP, but no so much anymore.

Come late April, I will have been here for three years as well. I did pretty much nothing unusual on Valentine's day. I have very few friends and no love interests whatsoever. R.I.P. me xP

Oops forgot to answer the new question. I feel very strongly about stopping bullying and helping people with self harm. Well, those are the first two. I've been bullied a lot in my life, mostly by way of a computer or internet game. I want to make sure others don't have to deal with that. And... This is really hard to admit. Um, I've struggled with self harm since a few years ago. I mostly didn't know how to tell anyone and want to make sure others can have the opportunity to evade the option of self harm.

That's horrible, Night :,(

Bullying makes me want to find the bullies who did it to said person and chew them up about it. I have been made fun of before (school) because of my lifestyle. I have friends have been bullied as well, and they cry just at the memories.
