Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Clothing

So, I am not a very fashionable person in general, or at least, I avoid being so. I think we all have our own unique styles, and how would it be to share and compare? That's what this is for! Share your style, write it in a story form, a list, whatever you wish. Then we can all compare how we dress, why we dress that way, and what makes us unique. So here is mine!

My Style:

- Black, always. No, I don't dress goth or emo, I just wear at least one article of black clothing at all times. Usually, that is in my T-shirts, but sometimes it will be my jeans. Now, I am not a huge fan of the color because it is quite depressing, yet it helps me blend into the crowd. I am also very self-conscious and so it helps take the attention away from me. I have a funny story about that, actually, when I didn't wear black for one day.

- Shark tooth necklace. Okay, okay, if you know Zeon, you know he is a surfer kid with a shark tooth necklace, right? Yeah, he is my role model with that. A lot of you know I cannot be in water anymore, yet I dream of surfing. Well, shark tooth necklaces are a bit of the ocean that I adore, which again links to my love of surfing and the beach. Zeon actually had his before I got mine, shockingly.

- Paracord and a survival watch. I might not be a prepper, but I am that "I am prepping for Voldemort's return or a zombie apocalypse without your knowing" kind of person. I ask for "survival gear" and I made my own paracord bracelet at school. I never take these off, even when sleeping, besides when showering and doing dishes. When I was able to be in water and swim, I used to even wear my watch because it was waterproof, regardless of getting water rashes.

- Wool socks and gloves in summer. Ahh, the bane of my existence. This is not at all my choice, but again, the whole medical thing decided to curse my life. Maybe it is a good thing? Everything happens for a reason, I suppose. And it really helps me relate to a friend of mine. But anyways, I have to wear wool socks and gloves until it is 70 Fahrenheit or warmer. Seriously. Now, do I always follow this? Uhh... No. But I really should.

- Seattle style. Maybe you know where Seattle is, maybe not. It is the biggest city in Washington with high style. They dress peculiar, I mean, socks and sandles, pockets like what hoodies have, yet on T-shirts. I grew up there, so I know all about it. Well, my grandma brings us shopping in Seattle every summer when we visit (we live in Washington, but nowhere near Seattle anymore). And so I still dress classy. French-styled shirts (at least, that is what I think of. They are almost like turtle necks, but really short sleeves, tight, and striped), Long sleeves with hoodie pockets on the front (but not hoodies), blouses, and the such. Yet, I don't think I've really found my style yet. I just wear what I am given. And the funny thing is? My pants rarely fit like shirts do. I am super tall, so they are usually a size too big to just fit the length. xD

If you don't mind me asking, what city do you live in? I live in Tacoma, so I was just curious.

I was born in Tacoma! I actually lived over in the Tacoma/Seattle area for numerous years. I cannot give my city because of how small it is (only 400 people), but I live in Eastern Washington now. Although we do visit Tacoma quite often, usually once every 1 or 2 months to go to the zoo and visit family.

That's so cool! I volunteer at the zoo! I bet I've seen you!

Now that is awesome. The fact that you've probably seen each other, and know each other, but have never met in person.

I know! By the way PDZA is the zoo.

Wow, that is awesome! I have seen a ton of volunteers at PDZA, I almost guarantee I've seen you! We have been going since I was born, so a good 16 years.

Oh! Oh! Oh! I went to Washington a year or so ago and visted Tacoma! It's a very nice place. The zoo was great. We actually ended up naming our parakeet Tacoma in honor of the trip. :P The other is Chihuly, after Dale Chihuly, a glass artist. (There's an amazing glass garden in Washington where we saw his works... Have any of you ever been there?)

Awesome, Abi! Wouldn't be awesome If I ran across you at the zoo without even realizing it? :D

I wear... ah... a t-shirt and jeans? Every day? Well, in the summer I usually wear either running shorts or hiking shorts instead. I usually wear one article of bright clothing, and one of dark. I have a silver necklace with a really pretty whale tale pendant with black swirls cut into it, which I wear quite often and have had it for years. I always have on a green/blue bracelet that my dad brought back from Peru about two years ago, and a blueish purpleish watch. I refuse to tie my hair up unless I absolutely have to (which is usually on a ropes course). I like to go barefoot rather than wear shoes, at least in the summer. I have a lot of race t-shirts from various 5k's, and wear a lot of fandom/event shirts too. I hate anything really girly, and I tend to ignore whatever is in fashion and just go with whatever I feel like.

That is how I am! I mean, I tend to dress really nice, but that is just because of what family buys me. In Seattle, there is no "just buy a t-shirt and simple jeans". Otherwise, trust me, I would. I also have to agree, having my hair up is just awful. My hair is super long, reaching over half way down my back. As for going barefoot, I used to do that, but now I won't for two reasons: bees and the fact that half my toes are permanently purple from my medical issue. Kinda awkward having to explain that.

Yes, that is really cool!

As for my style...huh...I don't know. I'll do what I can:

Tops - I usually wear simple T-shirts... They are always pretty loose and usually not printed on, but sometimes they are. In winter I wear a lot of button-down shirts. I wear a lot of sweat-shirts, my favorite is gray-brown with a deer's head in camo on it.

Bottoms - Almost always jeans. I love them. I live in them. Flare jeans, not tight ones. I can't stand tight clothes. Sometimes I wear my sister's old yoga pants when it is too hot to wear jeans or her shorts. Last year I wore only boys' shorts, but this year they are to small, sadly. Which means...I don't know what, because I WILL NOT wear the fashionable shorts of now-a-days for girls.

Shoes - Sneakers or boots when I have to, water shoes or barefoot when I can.

Other - My awesome blue watch which has been through everything, (including being lost in the mud of the field for several weeks, poor thing.) sometimes I wear a bracelet that a friend made, or I made...but not usually. Very VERY rarely necklaces. I have hanged myself in trees on necklaces, it is an offal feeling. I don't have earings. I almost always wear my hair back in a pony-tail or in braids.

Colors - Like you Ashlee, I love wearing black. I'm not sure why...I am also self-conscious...VERY self-conscious, so maybe that is part of it? I like colorful colors, but rarely wear them. Mostly I stick to black, blue and green. My hairties are always colorful though! xD

Ohh, I have to agree with your style. If it wasn't for my grandma insisting on getting nicer clothes (and they still aren't the top trend stuff) then I would wear what you do. I always wear jeans, and like I said, they are usually a bit too big due to my height. I wear a ton of sweaters and hoodies during winter because of how warm and comfortable I am in them. Oh, and I also wear occasionally button up shirts with those cardigan sweaters and people always call me a nerd for it. xD

I enjoy more bright colors as well, like bright blues, greens, reds, and so forth. But because I am so self-conscious, I tend to stick to natural colors. Black, brown, gray, white, dark blue, and darker greens. So seems like we have a lot in common then!

If you don't mind me asking, why can't you swim in water anymore, Ashlee? I like your description of your style. Me, I don't really follow trends that much either -- usually I wear a T-shirt and jeans, or shorts with pockets, or (in the winter) a HUGE Captain America sweatshirt (I love it so MUCH!!). I live in Georgia, so it's pretty warm here most of the year. Also, I always wear socks. I don't like sleeping without socks on my feet. It's just.... weird. ;)

Thank you, Caroline! Your style is really nice too, it seems quite comfortable. As for swimming (and the glove/wool sock situation) is because I have Reynolds Syndrome which means I cannot be in cold temps. I have to have wool socks and gloves until it is 70 F and warmer. And I cannot be in water (besides maybe a hot tub?) without serious consequences. It is a pain, but at least it means I can relate to one of my friends.

Wow, I've never heard of that before! That stinks... but I'm glad it helps you relate to your friend. I like your style also, by the way!
