I'm pretty scared

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

I'm pretty scared

I'm pretty scared just now.... See, my mom and brother are in South Carolina, and my mom's usually the pianist at church. There's another pianist, but she's due to have her baby any day. So I might have to play for congregational singing Sunday, but I won't know if I do or not until it's over, cause Heidi could go into labor anytime, be it tomorrow morning or twenty minutes before the service starts.... And it would be the first time playing for people to sing for me... So yeah, I'm really scared. Your thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated. Also appreciated would be a magic pill you can swallow that will make you the greatest pianist in the world for a couple hours... just a couple hours.... That would be nice. Thanks!

I don't quite get the situation, but the gist is that you'll be playing piano for the choir and you're scared? That's normal in this kind of thing, but I will be thinking of you and praying for you. I know you'll do great though... Good luck!

Aw!!!  Good luck!  I hope you don't have to play unless you secretly want to, and if you do have to play, I know you're going to do fine.  Just pretend you're the only one there, and play your best!  :)

Oh Emily, I hope you do well!! :D:D I'll pray for you!!!  And (if you see this in time) playing for services can be really fun! :) I've played for my church a couple times and am going to join the worship team really soon! :D I know you'll do well! :D

Thanks, everyone! And Lena, it's that I might be playing for the part of the service when everyone sings. It's really the might that gets to me. I wish I knew one way or another. :P But I think I'll get it together well enough. Some of the songs are really hard, but if I play them enough I should pull it together - I just don't know how I'll do when I have everyone singing at me plus the song leader and the really soft guitar in the background. (Our guitarist isn't super confident and just strums really quietly.) Another part of it is that my mom is a super hymn player, and I kind of feel like if I really biff, I'll be letting her down and not measuring up to that standard. That's stupid and I know she doesn't want me to feel that way, but I can't help it. :(

Well, if they are willing to have you play

you must be good ;D Anyway, try (and I

know this is easier said than done) to not

let your nerves drive you insane before you

even know if you're going to play. If it turns

out you are for sure going to be playing, I

wish you the best of luck! And even if you

make a mistake, it's okay. We have

some really good pianists at our church...

and one that isn't all that great (no offence

to her). She, one of the main pianists at our

church, has made plenty of mistakes and

no one even pays attention to it. Oops,

I'm rambling now...sorry! Anyway, if you

play on Sunday, good luck and I'm sure

you'll do great :)

Maybe once you learn the songs themselves, you can try playing while your family sings? That might help... If you don't want want to do that, you can always just imagine people singing while your practicing... Maybe?

Thanks, everybuggy! No phone call yet (may it ever be) and my quilting teacher is going to play one of the hymns, which helps. I had to drop one of the syncopated songs, though, cause it was just to hard to learn perfectly in two and a half days - the music guy will understand. That sometimes happens to the pianist who's having a baby. The other songs aren't perfect yet either, but they'll do. I hope. :D And it's weird - my brain is nervous, but it's not affecting me that much. I think whining about it here got the terror out of my system. :D Or maybe I'll start shaking when I sit down at the piano. (if I do. Oh, awful, awful, if!!!!!) Anywho, yeah, I'm still scared, but has helped me in the past few weeks noticing how little attention anyone pays to the pianist. :P Good and bad, that. (Mary W. had an awesome word for that, but I can't remember it. At least I think it was Mary W.) More good than bad, though, in my case. :D
