RIP Summer Break

RIP Summer Break

RIP Summer Break

Ahhh, school starts on Monday for me! I'm kind of nervous because after five years of homeschooling, Moonfrost and I are moving to a private school! (One that's an hour and a half away from our house...and starts at 8:30 in the morning. :|)

How about you guys? Are you excited or nervous for school? Have any of you already started back?

I'm so sad that summer break is ending...but I hope you all have a great school year this year!!!

(Oh, and I also wanted to announce that because of all this school business, I'll probably be absent from my ski lodge for a little while longer than usual, as well as from any other threads/things I'm participating in. But once I get into the swing of things at school, I'll try to get back on writing!)

*stares* Ahem, free time? In the summer, maybe. I used to be very excited about school, but then I experienced this thing called “7th Grade”, and yeah, that kinda went out the window. I’m homeschooled, but we go to a private-like school once a week, which means, homework. Even writing. I really struggle with writing because it’s usaully reports and structured writing. Bleh. Overall, it’s a good school, but ugh.

I’ve never gone to public school in my life, so I don’t know if that is better, worse, mediocre, or what, but I wish you the best for a great school year, Mice!

I've had a week and a half of school so far! LUCKY DUCKS!!!!!!! I'm in 5th, and I just had a bday (YAY ME!!!!!). My homework is SO. EASY. I guess I'm lucky. Anyway, Micearenice, have fun at private school! You too Moonfrost!

Welp, normal public school girl here. I actually don’t mind school, everyone thinks I’m weird as heck, but I have a close group of friends and I do pretty well in my classes. Diabolicalseal went to a private school before switching to public (she’s one of my above mentioned close friends). I start after Labor Day.

Everything is slowly coming back up for me. Cross country practice starts Thursday, freshman orientation is the twenty-third, and school starts...wayyyy too soon. XD

I love learning, but my school recently switched to proficiency based learning and grading, which is a mess. I'll rant if I keep going but if you ever hear those words, RUN.

Anndddd as I clicked submit I thought of more to say.

Micearenice, is this now your second day of school? How did it go yesterday?

Okay, now I'm done. XD

Yesterday went great, thanks for asking! I already found some literature-loving friends to hang out with, for which I'm deeply grateful. And I only got lost a couple of times... :3

Today was actually longer than yesterday. Since this is a hybrid private school, I only go to campus thrice a week. Today was a homeschool day, and I had to figure out how all my homework works.

Uh oh...what's profieciency-based grading? It sounds scary!

I'm so glad that your first day went well! Do you like that three days a week system?

Ah, proficiency-based grading. The bane of my existence. XD In short, it is a way of grading that replaces the traditional A,B,C,D method with numbers 1-4.

1- Below proficiency or  incomplete

2- approaching proficiency

2.5- basic proficiency and understanding

3- proficient

4- exceeding proficiency

However, some teachers won't give fours under any circumstances. Our GPA's  are still determined the same way, so it is literally impossible to get a 4.0.

In addition all of those lovely changes, we have summative and formative assessments, which basically mean that not all of our grades count. Only summative assessments count towards our final grades. For example, in math last year, I probably had around 3 assignments per quarter that actually affected my grade. All this does is tell some kids that they don't have to do the homework or take that pop quiz seriously. There was a girl in my math class who got three's and four's on everything except for one day. She was really sick, but it was our last final and she want to try to stick it out. She ended up getting a 2 and that brought down her entire grade for the year because all of her good grades of quizzes and homework didn't count.

There you have it folks, proficiency based grading. I hope that explained the basics to you!

I'm starting Junior high. Today was the first full day. My teachers are cool for the most part, but we don't have recess anymore and the hallways in between classes is like being a dwarf in a sweaty, confused stampede of giants.

Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration.

Anyways. It was fine. I just don't like the fact that the school year is actually starting.

I know, it sure would be nice to have recess. It's not just elementary school kids that need to play!

Chip says, "Endo." You've been studying my biology notes, I see.

I'm starting high school! I'm very excited. I love meeting new people, and I have good classes with a lot of my friends. The art class I'm taking only has 9 people in it, and my best friend is one of those 9, so I'm especially excited for that.

@everyone who has actual class schedules, what classes are you taking? I'm taking Art I, Ceramics (they offer that at my school, it's awesome!!), Biology, Geometry, PE, Spanish, English I, and Theology.

Wow, your school has a bunch of cool subjects for freshmen! I'm also starting freshman year. I'm taking Physics, Honors World History,  Honors English, French 2, Imaginative Writing, Driver's Ed,  Honors Math, band, and chorus. I'm looking forward to it!
