Random Thoughts/Things?

Random Thoughts/Things?

I wasn’t really sure what to call this thread, but I’ve had this idea floating around in my head for awhile now. Basically, anyone can post anything here. Any random thought you have, any random thing that happens to you, any random question that pops into your mind. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to be random.

I'm more accustomed to saying good morning than ditto afternoon, or ditto evening. Maybe because there are fewer syllables (is evening two syllables or three?)

Therefore...good morning! The sun is definitely not setting right now, and furthermore, it is definitely not evening right now...lol

After six college visits, I've compiled a list of the most common words/phrases you'll hear during one and made it into a bingo board for the next few that I'm going on today and tomorrow. I'm calling it College Tour Bingo :) (in case you're wondering the strangest one is 'cheese club'... for some reason the last three colleges have included the fact that they have a cheese club?? i have no idea why)

Why do most, if not all, of my math problems involving miles per hour include somebody speedin'? Like, this one problem was like "Sylvia (not the real name) went 100 miles in four hours. She then quadrupled her speed. How long would it take her to go 1,400 miles at the new speed", and when I did the math, I found out that Sylvia or whatever her name is was goin' 100 MILES PER HOUR and I'm like "isn't that considered 'reckless drivin'' if you're goin' that fast in a 75mph speed zone???". Honestly, is it just me or are these types of math problems actually badly influencin' some people by makin' them think that goin' 100mph is ok? (Sorry for that, Admins. Admins, you can also tell me what you think of these speed math problems if you want :])

Bradley said "tkbim". Ticket Binge Math? I think these before-mentioned types of problems should be called "Ticket Binge Math" 'cause these people are gonna end up gettin' tickets.

Speeding motorists are not a good example for math problems. It would be better to use airplane pilots, astronauts, or even racecar drivers for high speeds. We Admins support safe drivers who follow all the rules of the road.

that's so true!! I also keep seeing problems that have to do with gasoline, or coal or oil, or airplanes, or other things that drive climate change, and it always makes me wonder how society is going to become sustainable if the math textbooks can't even replace old-fashioned fossil fuel-oriented problems with problems about, say, solar panels? Wind turbines? I really think it would have a good effect and make sustainability seem more like the norm instead of just something optional.

(I love your interpretation of Bradley, by the way :) )

Once upon a time in a far, far-away land lived a greedy King. He had many subjects, and taxed them all very heavily. While unhappy with the system, most of those under his rule succumbed to this without complaint. However, one haughty Count refused to pay, even going so far as to hide his money.

The King send his most fearsome tax collector to coerce the poor Count, but was met again with blatant and rude denial. After trying several times, the King eventually gave up and ordered the Count's arrest and scheduled execution. The King gave the Count several more chances while in prison but he never accepted.

Finally, on the execution block, the King offered one last time, but the Count still refused.

As the executioner's axe came swishing down, the Count finally relented: "WAIT! I'll pa—"

But it was too late, and the Count died before revealing where his fortune was kept.

The moral of this story? Don't hatched your Counts before they can chicken.
