Meatless Week

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Meatless Week

Meatless Week

Starting next Monday, August 17, I'm challenging anyone who's interested to eat no meat at all for a week! We can use this thread to encourage each other, post about what we're eating, and discuss our personal reasons for limiting our consumption of meat or animal products in general. People who are already vegetarian, pescatarian, or vegan are welcome too!

*This wasn't my idea originally; it came from a post Luminescence made in the YWP classroom. So all credit goes to her!

I'm doing it!

Aw, thanks for making this! I will totally be participating. Maybe doing it with a bunch of people will *finally* pressure me into actually going through with it XD

I'm doing it! My reason is my compassion for animals, and more importantly to reduce my carbon footprint. Although, I might just do pescatarian with all sustainable seafood. This feels a little hypocritical seeing as I just ordered pork chops for dinner. Poor piggie.

*sighs dejectedly* I wish I had enough will power to do this. Well, I probably could for a week, but it would just create more work for my mom, seeing as we have meat at dinner almost every night.

To all the animals out there, I'm sorry.

Hey guys, it's fine if you don't want to participate. You're absolutely welcome to make whatever choices you want about what food you eat. But I'd appreciate it if you'd respect our choice of limiting our meat consumption and refrain from posting pictures of meat. I didn't intend for this thread to be a debate about whether people should or shouldn't be vegetarian; it's for people who are participating in Meatless Week to support each other, and your meat posts feel rather disrespectful to me. Thank you!

This is a great idea! I'll try and participate. The meat industry treats animals so poorly and the environmental effects are very serious.

If you don't think you can do fully vegetarian (because it is very difficult) here are some of my suggestions of ways to participate!
- Go pescatarian! I am a full time pescatarian, and I found that it's a lot easier to keep up consistently than going vegetarian cold turkey. Although the seafood industry has issues, at least wild seafood lives in its natural habitat with much more room and freedom than farm animals. Seafood also has a lower carbon footprint and arguably better for your health. Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch is a great resource for finding sustainable seafood.
- If you can't participate because your family eats meat, suggest that your family does a meatless meal a week or try beyond meat or omnipork. If you go shopping with your parents, try buying ethically farmed meat and wild caught seafood.
- If you like cooking, try making some vegan baked goods or vegetarian foods! A lot of cultures have great vegetarian food. I would try Buddhist soy based meals, Indian curries, and Indonesian tempeh! They're really delicious and give you the proteins from meat that you need.
-  Try to eat less meat. This is pretty simple, but maybe have just one or two slices of steak instead of the whole thing.
Add on if you have any more suggestions! And for everyone who doesn't want to participate, please respect this thread and other CBers' desicion to eat less meat. The meat photos come off as a bit rude, even if you didn't intend it. I can't wait for Monday! :)

I do this every week! Vegetarianism is awesome! I eat a lot of Indian food. It's SO GOOD AND VEGETARIAN TOO!!!! I really like the Vegan Tikka Masala from Trader Joe's, if you have one near you. Okay, warning time. There are a lot of things that may seem vegetarian....but they're not.

Heres a list.

-Jello! Gelatin is NOT vegetarian! Read the ingredients, some yogurts have gelatin too.

-Cheese! Some cheese has rennet in it, which is curdled milk taken from dead cows. READ THE INGREDIANTS, PEOPLE!

-Gummy candy! Gelatin again...

And, obviously, hamburgers.

Anyway, think about how animals feel! Don't eat them! Read the ingredients! And eat delicious Indian food!

If you read that whole thing, that probably means you're thinking about going vegetarian. If you're reading this, IM PRESURING YOU TO GO VEGETARIAN.

And if you go pescatarian, that's fine too. As a matter of fact, I was actually pescatarian before I realized that all animals mattered! If you're pescatarian, just ignore that last line. XD

Anyway,

Surroundedbybooks, your local vegetarian, is now out.

Coolio! I'm vegetarian too!! Trader Joe's is awesome, but our nearest one is 45 minutes away, so we don't go very often.

Also, pretty much all marshmallows contain gelatin, but the marshmallows at Trader Joe's do not. That's one of the only places we've found vegetarian ones, but you could probably also find them in specialty food stores.

I think it's really cool that you guys are going meat-free for a week!

Quick recommendation: I’m a big fan of these lentils (picture attached). They’re vegetarian, they taste great and are nicely filling, and you can make them in the microwave in a minute, so they’re great when the rest of your family is having meat and you need an alternative!

I'm already vegetarian, so I guess I'm alread doing this. I know that the food chain is "natural" and whatever, but either way I've always hated the idea of killing anyone fr a meal. Humans are animals, too, and are just as valuable as non-human animals so I don't see the difference. It's like . . . a life, just gone, for a meal.

So, quick update: (I already announced this on YWP but decided to put it here too) I'm going to try and go meatless for all meals except dinner. It's not much, but it's a start, and I'm excited. I'm going to need a lot of motivation, though, so wish me luck!
