@Jaybells: Made-up Languages Chat Thread!!

Here's the thread you suggested! So nice that you like to make up languages and worlds too! I've invented a lot of countries, but only one language - it's supposed to be spoken by an imaginary tribe of Native Americans...

I've heard of Tolkien's languages - I think it's so amazing that he actually finished making them up. I'm still not done with mine! I wonder what it would be like to learn Elvish.

Heyyyyy

I've been taking Mandarin (Chinese), and it's seriously been giving me ideas... So many... I wanna start over and make a more convenient language from scratch again. :/

Okay wait you've been taking Mandarin? That must be so hardddd. I mean, fascinating of course, but tricky, being so different from Western languages.

And making up a new language? Go for it, that sounds so fun! I myself have also been toying with the idea of making up a new language. I want to make all the words and names sound really pretty. That's another nice thing about making up new languages - you can make it sound beautiful. (And that's what i'm dissatisfied about with Aiscuc - the sound of it isn't the way I would like, although it's still fun to say, silan Uto. (Silan Uto means thank God - it sounds a bit overboard in English, but it's a common phrase in Aiscuc.) Maybe we could work on a new conlang together, if you'd like.

I've found the thread about CSS in the Inkwell, and I've been reading it with Great Interest, except I can't read it all because it's so late at night and I will have to stop looking at the computer soon. Such is the difficulty of only having 24 hours in the day. But anyway, I was thinking maybe the sentence structure could go like this - verb first, then the rest of the sentence, and then the subject. Like "want to work more on CSS you?" It would make things much more complicated of course, but very interesting.

Bye and good night! :)

We have a Mandarin quiz today ahhhhhh TwT

I'm going to say now if I don't like the sound and flow of my own language, I rework it. No point in making something unsatisfactory. And I'd be thrilled to work together to make this new conglang!! :D

Your grammar suggestion is interesting... I'll look over my notes when I get a chance and see if it'll work!

*is thrilled at the prospect of making another language*

All right!! I guess first we should start by deciding where we want this language to be spoken, and what we want it to be called. I had a few ideas for what types of people could use it:

-Forest elf-like people who are guardians of the woods, or something

-People who live in mountains, and are fierce and uncompromising, probably led by chieftains. Not rocky, rough mountains, but rather mountains with lots of forests and fields.

-People who live in the ocean (aka mermaids and mermen-type people)  - this would provide lots of
opportunities for worldbuilding, and we could try to make everything
sound watery and stormy and wavelike. I think I like this idea best.

Of course, these are just preliminary ideas, and if you have some that you think would work better, we could use those instead!

I'm so excited to begin!! :)

Sorry for the wait, I could've sworn I replied after first seeing this! :/

I really like the idea of water-based language!! And on that thought, why bind ourselves to only humanoid sentient beings? The ocean is full of so much wonderful stuff that we could never dream of; now just imagine what could exist in a fiction ocean!!

Like, think about the octopus, smarter than most mammals, flexible body, can change colour, exude (is that the right word?) ink and venom, and have regeneratation plus 'brain' bits in basically all of their body! They're so cool!!! Then think of dolphins with echolocation and *smorts* and complex social behaviour, or jellyfish that are just so puzzling and yet so intriguing (convince me they're not just pretty -- if not sometimes extremely venomous -- biological non-sentient bags with lots of teeny-tiny eyes?!). That's not to mention creatures that can literally make a move within miliseconds(I think it's a type of crab), electric-based creatures, deep-sea and seemingly pressure-proof life, bioluminescence, the ability to "fly"(seriously, have you seen flying fish???), or symbiotic relationships, and it's all just so cool and sorry for rambling but I love the ocean so much if you can't tell lol.

Anyway, so language stuff... I'll think about it for a bit :3

Oh my Gandalf, Jaybells, I'm sorry I took a while to reply. I never have enough timmmme :( Anyway, I am once again here!

I hadn't thought of extending the language to other creatures, but we can definitely do that! The ocean is beautiful, although I personally think that some things in it are a little creepy. But there are lots of animals that are wonderful, like dolphins. Apparently dolphins do have their own "language" - kind of - which is just... boggling. I wish we could actually talk to them.

Well, anyway, as to our own ocean language, what should it be called? And what should be the name's meaning in English? Perhaps "wavesong" or "windsong"?

That just gave me an idea... imagine if a language was invented which was basically English, but reworked to sound more poetic and inspirational. Like a storm could be called a "windsong" and nighttime could be called "shadowveil" and a pencil could be called "stick-of-wood-which-writes-great-epics"... nah, I'm just being silly about the pencil :)

But seriously, now I've gotten interested in redoing English. I'm pretty excited to start an ocean language too, though!

Yo, I wanna rework English too now! That legit sounds so fun and like it'd be so pretty!!

Definitely can relate to the Ocean's creature's being creepy; I have a strange love/repulsion/curiosity to that kind of thing, although it's hard to express properly through words. Like... Barnacles and fish eyes and goopy stuff kinda weirds me out a lot; but it also makes me really interested as to why it's like that, and what makes me as a human not want to be near it. But then again, I love the ebb and flow and breezyness of the Ocean itself, and how that's reflected in the life supported there, plus just marvelling at all the stuff down there, if that makes sense.

Hello!! I invented a language for me and my friend's book series called Cassian! It's majorly based off of Latin with some tidbits of English grammar and such. If anyone wants to hear a few words of it, let me know! I'd be glad to!

Miriam H, I'd love it if you want to share some of Cassian! It sounds super interesting! And if you want to help with making up an ocean language, you can do that too if it's okay with Jaybells! (Oh dear, I've got way too many exclamation marks here.) !!!!!!!!!!!!!! There, I've gotten it out of my system. ;)

Jaybells, I can see how you would feel that way about the ocean... yeah, it's really beautiful and intriguing at the same time.

Okay, here maybe we should decide: Do we fiddle around a bit with reworking English, or do we go ahead and start the massive task of an ocean language? Maybe redoing English would be easier, but if you're still interested in making a new conlang, we can definitely do that. I thought of a name for it - Ardira Laila, meaning "the spoken words of the ocean people" - "ardira" could mean language or spoken  words, and "lai" could mean ocean, with "la" meaning people.

You've got so many great ideas!! So exciting!

I'd be happy to focus on Ardira Laila for now, and hear about Cassian from Miriam! Feel free to pop in here as you please! :D Latin is actually one of the few really big/impactful world languages I haven't had the fortune to study much at all, so it'd be a cool experience to dive into!

Aaaand I forgot to put that I'd LOVE to help develop a language! To begin with we'd need to figure out a language to kinda use as a framework. That's what I did.

I'm currently building three languages for a fantasy world of mine, and I'd love some advice/suggestions!  I can also share them if anyone's interested.
