Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Any of y'all

Any of y'all experiencing the smoke from the Canadian wildfires? I'm in a zone that's pretty badly affected - I couldn't even go outside today because it was "hazardous," and it smelled terrible, and it actually looked hazy. I saw in the news that there are lots of other states that are affected too, so I was wondering if there are any other CBers who are going through this?

It just doesn't seem fair! This could go on all summer, theoretically, and we might have no real sunlight and no clean air, just because adults - mainly, corporations - are insisting on burning coal and using oil and drying up Canada and the western US so much that the forests literally burn down!? How much longer is this going to go onr? I think it's pretty clear that no one in the government is going to take action, and yet there are people being evacuated from their homes because of fires. (Oh my gosh - it's kinda like in KotLC with Everblaze.) I have a friend in Alberta, Canada, who almost had to be evacuated. She could have lost everything. And I'm losing my gorgeous summer weather and I am not happy about it. I'm kind of worried, honestly.

Yeah, I'm in New England. The sun was dim enough yesterday that you could look at it, but not quite as dim as the days we had last summer with the smoke from the californian wildfires. Does anybody remember those? I still have pictures from them.

I'm actually really surprised, I'm not super far north so I didn't expect to get any smoke, but they just announced that we can't leave the school because the air quality is so bad. It's not great. I hope people in Canada are doing okay <333

Ah, I get a similar thing too. No wildfires, but the weather is not catching up with the calendar! It's super cold! Which is weird because I'm in usually warm SoCal.

where I live, things are lookin' clear for now.

and I agree, it's so horrible how humans are constantly destroying the enviorment for no reason! and then they go on about how evil all the invasive animals are, and how they should be stopped, blah blah, but then no one even considers that humans are the worst invasive animal on the planet!

(sorry, I am very passionate about this)

YES. I live in Virginia, and while it's not terrible here it feels really weird - there's a haze over everything and it smells smoky outside.  I can still go out thoguh, so I hope it doesn't get worse but it probably will because of everything moving down from the north :/

Yeah, it's pretty bad where I live. The smoke started yesterday evening; it was so hazy I thought my vision was bad, and my dad compared it to an old sepia photograph. We had school today, but recess was indoors, and we all had to wear masks. At around twelve o'clock, we started smelling the smoke inside the building, and everything outdoors was veiled in a dark yellowish haze. By two o'clock, it was a vivid orange outside. It's clearer now, but it still smells strongly of smoke, and it's hazy enough that you can barely see a mile ahead.

If it's like this where I live, I can't even imagine what it must be like for people further north and in Canada. I really hope everyone's okay.

At school today, everyone was joking that it was the "apocalypse" and the "end of the world." And the terrible truth is that if something isn't done, their jokes won't be far off from the truth. I'm honestly terrified of what the future holds. These wildfires will keep getting worse, and so will the air quality.

I do everything I'm supposed to; I barely use any single use plastic, I recycle, I turn the water off when I brush my teeth, I take public transportation instead of car, and so on and so forth. I do everything I'm supposed to...but that's not enough. I'm thirteen. I can't stop the burning of fossil fuels, or deforestation, or harmful animal agriculture particles. All I can do is look up at the vividly orange sky and pray that adults and elected officials and corporations do the right thing before it's too late.

Same here. The sky was all yellowish today, and it's still quite smoky and very smelly. It's strange. We were not allowed to go outside for recess or gym class today, because the air quality is too bad, and all the teachers were using their air purifiers.

Where I live we are experiencing alerts for bad air quality and it's a bit hazy.

I remember a couple years ago when I was traveling to my grandparent's house and the smoke was so thick that you couldn't see 100 yards in front of you. We could see the fire from my uncle's house. Also, we had to wear masks when we went outside because the air was so bad. On our last night there we had to evacuate. It was super scary.

I hope if any of y'all are in the danger zones that you are ok.

Yep, same! I'm in ~Pennsylviania~ or however you spell it (yes I know I spelled my state wrong but idc rn it's really hard to spell so oh well) and it's very smokey. We were not allowed to play outside today (not that I care, b/c imo sports = meh), and the teachers strongly suggested we didn't eat outside.
