Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Here's our chat

Here's our chat thread! I'm so glad we're having this conversation :)

My least favorite subject would be chemistry, I think; it's a little difficult when you're homeschooling, because lots of experiments are impossible to actually do (I can imagine what the landlord would say if we blew up the kitchen) and so you have to basically learn from textbooks and from video demonstrations. Aside from that, though, I don't find it that interesting. There's not much scope for imagination in it :/ Sometimes math is my least favorite, though; it depends on what branch of math I'm studying. Some of it is actually kind of fun once I get the hang of it, but there are some kinds, like geometry and graphs of functions, which I very much dislike. I'm sorry about your math classes; I think our current educational system is a little uninspiring when it comes to math (from the little I know of it lol). Anyway, I'm definitely more of a creative/interested-in-the-arts type of girl... I'll probably not end up in any careers that involve science or technology. (At least I hope not.) Do you know yet what kind of career you'd like to have?

How's your rock climbing camp going? I can never find the courage to go very far up any type of rock, unfortunately, but it's cool that you do :)

Right, here I am~ No worries about the wait! I can understand not wanting to type and type and retype on a mobile :)

Ah yes, pockets are definitely nice to have :)

Wow, belonging to a gymnastics organization sounds really interesting, especially traveling around to compete. I think the nicest place I've traveled to might be Portugal, although I also just love NYC, which I've been to several times. It's so cosmopolitan and full of interesting people and places. It's really hard to just choose one or two favorites, though, because nearly all the places I've been to are lovely and have their own unique aspects that I like. What about you?

Thank you!! (I really like your writing and poetry too, it's so vivid and lyrical :) ) I'll probably post an abridged version of the story (I was realizing that it's kind of long, so I might not post the whole thing) on the Regular Writing Thread or on Inkwell. Ooh, how nice that you put in some environmentalism in your story! I love the idea of the selkies facing the effects of climate change too.

Irish? Wow, that's amazing. And learning Indonesian and Dutch would be great too! Yeah, I agree that learning different languages just opens so many doors to new opportunities, and it's also really nice how it can shape your worldview to look at things through the lens of a different language.

Hmm, I also like the name Rowan :) Some of my other favorite names are Roxana, Juliana, Sabrina, Gemma, Kerry, Oriana, and Delfine (for girls) and Ronald, Kaspar, David, and Renato (for boys). But those are just a few... I love how just hearing a name can instantly suggest a character to me, like the name Sabrina makes me think of a very friendly, poised, upbeat girl who's popular in a genuine way and is kind and nice to everyone, whereas the name Roxana makes me think of someone who's sort of haughty and proud.

Definitely "Old Fashioned Girl" by Lisa McHugh would be the song that describes me best - I heard it on the radio a few weeks ago and was instantly like "This is me this is me this is absolutely meeee" and it's also one of my favorites because it's very upbeat and happy. "Kerry County Fair" by Clodagh Lawlor is also sort of like me, although it's the mood rather than the person that I relate to.

I looked up the Burren. Goodness, it is amazing :) Let's see, the most beautiful place I've seen would be either the beaches of Mexico (especially the ones on the Pacific coast), or a wilderness area I've been to multiple times which has breathtaking waterfalls and miles of forests. The Barranca de Oblatos valley in Jalisco, Mexico, is also gorgeous. I visited it once or twice, and it's amazing...

Ooh, my favorite TV show is All Creatures Great and Small. I'm waiting for Season 4 to come out, but as far as I know, even the trailer isn't out yet :/ It's about a vet in Yorkshire and his eccentric employer Siegfried, Siegfried's very comical brother Tristan, and the housekeeper Mrs. Hall, as well as several other characters. It's so funny and comforting :) What about you?

I'd either want to be able to fly, or be able to have ice powers. I was never very into Frozen, but then Frozen II came out and I became an incurable Frozen fan for several years. That phase has definitely passed, but I still think ice powers would be really fun :) You?

My favorite cuisine is my parents' cooking! I love their recipes and ways of cooking things. But as for more ~recognized~ cuisines, I guess Chinese cuisine would be one of my favorites. There's a Chinese restaurant near my home where they have absolutely delicious meals - darn it, now I'm hungry :) What kind of cuisine do you like?

New questions: How did you discover the CB? Favorite type of tea (if you drink tea)? Favorite board games?

Hey! Sorry about the late reply! School started on Thursday, so this whole week's been super hectic. But here I am, finally! :D

Ooh Portugal's cool! I've always wanted to travel there. And I love NYC too (okay maybe I'm biased because I live there but it's really great :))! Yeah, I totally get that -- every place has its own culture and everything, so it's hard to compare them! I love Amsterdam (it's so gorgeous and has so much history), Ireland (everywhere, really, but especially the natural landscapes like the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands, the Burren -- it's just so beautiful!).

Thank you! :) It always means a lot when people like my writing <3 Oh it'd be cool to read an abridged version! :D

Those songs sound cool! I'll definitely check them out :D

whoa I just looked up the Barranca de Oblatos valley and it's so beautiful! :0

Oh, All Creatures Great and Small! I haven't seen it, but one of my cousins really likes it and is always talking about it so I'm sure it's really good! I'll check it out next time I get a chance :D My favorite TV show is probably Over the Garden Wall -- it's really autumn-y and funny and comforting -- with Gravity Falls and Amphibia close behind. I like cartoons :)

Ice powers would be really cool (pun not intended lol), and so would flying. (Also I agree, I liked Frozen II better than Frozen :) ) I'd probably go with shapeshifting, because that's just cool I guess, or maybe time travel -- I'd love to see how people from different eras lived and to witness historical events firsthand. :)

It’s hard to pick just one cuisine — there’s so many good places in my neighborhood — but my favorites are probably Chinese, Colombian, Indian, and Greek. And my grandma doesn’t make Indonesian food that often, but it’s always so good when she does :)

There’s not much of a story to how I discovered the CB — during the pandemic, I had a subscription to Cricket (and still do), and one day I was bored, so I followed the link in the magazine and I’ve been here ever since :D How did you discover it?

Yeah, I love tea! It’s pretty much my preferred beverage. My favorite types are probably chai, Thai iced tea, and matcha, though I’ll pretty much drink anything. What about you?

Oh, good question! I haven’t played many board games recently, but I love Scattergories and Catan. I also like card games (Euchre, Rummy, Steal the Old Man’s Bundle, Kings in the Corner, and so on), if those count. Do you have any favorite board games?

Questions! What talents are you most proud of? Do you have a favorite band? Do you have any hobbies (besides like writing and reading) (have I already asked this?)?

ack i'm unforgivably late, i'm so sorry :((( I've been very very busy with school, and on the weekend i spent a lot of my computer time watching a live stream of the climate protests in NYC - did you manage to participate? i would've loved to, but unfortunately i live nowhere near NYC :( apparently there are a lot of other climate protests/disruptions going on though - i saw in the news that a group of protesters actually blocked the entrance to the Federal Reserve bank in nyc and got arrested?? i say good for them, it's wonderful that someone's actually taking serious action. (it was in the Guardian newspaper, if you're interested in looking it up.)

i've never seen Over the Garden Wall, but it sounds really great from your description, i'll check it out. and yes shapeshifting and time travel would be amazing!

wow, indonesian food sounds great! what are some of your favorite indonesian meals?

oof, the story of how i discovered the CB is rather complicated... i was searching for magazines that would publish stories by teenagers, because i wanted to get my writing published somewhere, and looked up Cricket. The first website i saw was the Cricket Media website, but later i noticed there was another one specifically for Cricket magazine, and when i looked at it, i discovered the Chatterbox! i was thrilled lol :)

i like herbal teas mostly; cornsilk tea and orange-blossom tea are lovely, and i especially like lemon-balm tea because it's so calming, and it tastes nice. if you ever have a hard time going to sleep, i recommend it :)

squee i love catan too! it's just so absorbing and fun! have you tried any of the variants? i've played the basic one, and also the Seafarers and the Merchants & Barbarians. and i also love Scotland Yard (where a group of policemen try to catch Mr. X, a fugitive criminal fleeing across London), Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, and Othello. Card games are really fun, I agree. Mille Bornes is really good - it's a French card game about a car race which is quite exciting.

I think the talent I'm proudest of would be my ability to create stuff like art, writing, outfit designs, etc - it's so satisfying when I've worked hard on a project and I can at last sit back and think, "I did that!" You?

Ooh, my favorite band is definitely Peter Paul & Mary - oddly, there are only about 20 songs of theirs that I like (at least of the ones I've heard so far) but they're some of my Utter Favorites of All Time. Their voices are so good and I love the whole warm, golden sound that their music has, especially in "Kisses Sweeter than Wine" and "The Garden Song." I first listened to them years ago, so their music brings back a lot of happy memories for me too :) Oh, and I also like Monedita de Oro, a Mexican band for kids which has lots of funny songs. What's your favorite band?

Hmm, no, I don't recall you asking that before :) My hobbies include gardening (which at this point mostly entails wEeDiNg), art, singing, calligraphy/illumination, decorating stuff in general, reading (of course), an occasional attempt at designing outfits, watching soccer games, and reading the news and finding out about stuff that interests me :) I'd love to take up stage acting at some point too, although idk if I'd be much good at it. What are your hobbies?

New questions! Least favorite vegetable? Most treasured item? (ack now I'm sounding like I'm creating a charrie sheet - well, never mind XD) Do you prefer ballpoint or fountain pens?

again, I'm so sorry this was so late - I really am enjoying our conversation, i just didn't have enough timeeeee. However, I really need to work on being less tardy, and I'll try to reply sooner next time :)
