Chatterbox: Down to Earth

"txt" Talk

"txt" Talk

How does everybody feel about the level of Text Talk on the Chatterbox? Do you want to use the text phrase "ppl" instead of people and so on? And what about numbers as substitutes for letters? Personally, it's kind of annoying, but.... I want to know what YOU think! Write your answers here.

I don't use it ALOT on here. I use it on email, but I attempt to refrain myself from using it on here.

Ahh, thanks for the thread, CJ.  I have been thinking about this recently, and I'm glad you've addressed this...issue (for lack of a better word).  Let me just say frankly that text talk bothers me.  Things like '2' and '4' in place of other words especially bug me.  I think that there is plenty of time to write 'too' in place of '2.'  That takes, what, about two seconds more?  Maybe all included it takes about a minute more to write out everything, but it makes the post so much easier to read and understand.  I also find it a bit ironic to be writing things in 'text talk' on a literary magazine website.  I do not intend any offense at all and am just stating my point.  I know that there are many different opinions on this front so I'm putting my feelings out there..  Also, yes Ima, I agree that the word 'I' really deserves to be capitalized, though sometimes when I'm in a rush, and writing a short sentence of an instant message or something, I do write 'i.'  And again, it takes about two seconds more to hit the shift key.  I think the English language is here to be used and the correct spellings are correct for a reason, so why not use them?  (Oh dear, I sound a lot more harsh than I mean to be, so sorry about that!  It's hard to convey tone of voice on a post! ;D)

I agree with Ima and Leaf. I mean, I have nothing against some abbreviations: things like IMHO (In My Humble Opinion), BTW (By The Way), or LOL (Laugh Out Loud) are all right if used in moderation, since they are widely known enough to not confuse people. I use them myself. But when someone uses 4 instead of for or types something like "ppl y do u h8 txt tlk," we have a problem. Not that anyone here uses it to that extent, but you can see what I mean. Does it really take *that* much longer to type correctly? You know, it's not that hard to hit the shift key. Really, it's not. And typing 4 instead of for -- dude, you would have to type *two* extra characters. Is that really too much to ask? I don't think it is.

It's also just plain inconsiderate. For many of us, it takes a good deal of effort to decipher the meanings in posts like that. It may be easier for the person typing, but it's harder on the reader.

And, seriously, like Leaf said, this is a literary website. While that doesn't mean we have to be really formal or anything, it should mean that we strive for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. And don't think I'm saying you have to be entirely perfect, either. Everybody makes mistakes. If somebody who types like a literate person for the most part uses "i" instead of "I" in a post, everybody would be willing to overlook it. Not so if someone does that every time.
I'm sorry if I'm being too harsh on people. It's just something that really bugs me, and maybe I overreact a little.

I agree with you completely, ZNZ. I'm really opposed to posting comments with incorrect capitalization, etc., and it takes us a lot of time to correct some posts that come in.

I agree with mostly everyone.  You're not going to learn proper grammar if you write, "hey u goin 2 da mall 2day w/ me?"  It's hard to read, makes you sound, um, *trying to be nice* strange, and normally, you don't even say things nicely.  I know from friends texting me!  I text this whole LONG thing about my day and how exciting it was or whatever, and they text back ,"cool" or, if I text this whole long thing and then at the end say, "what did you do today?", they normally reply "nothin" and not even comment on my WHOLE LONG TEXT.  Sorry.  That makes me angry.  They don't express any feelings for me.  That's why I prefer to talk on the phone.  Anywho, but the things I do use are, "becuz" or "cuz" and "lol" and "ttyl" and "g2g".  You know, just your more typical ones.

Phew, okay, having posted a string of five of these. Rachel, no one is telling you that you CAN'T or even SHOULDN'T use text speak. Everyone has their own opinion on how THEY are going to post, and some people have voiced the concern that sometimes text speak is difficult to understand. I used text speak as a kid and stopped when typing up papers became difficult, because I couldn't shift between the two "languages" -  and when I read text speak it is in a slightly more choppy way than I would read full words, but that does not mean that, if you feel strongly about it, you cannot use it. So long as we can understand you, I think it's all fine. -Admin

Rachel, none of use are trying to offend you, or say that text talk shouldn't be used! Some people enjoy txt, and some people prefer not to use it. I don't have any huge problems with it, I just don't like using it myself. If you want to use it, use it! :)

Like the Admins said. No one's attacking you personally; just realize that this website is, for the most part, made up of a bunch of wordwonks who love the English language and occasionally correct the grammar of their teachers. We don't really care how you write or talk, but each of us cares deeply about how he himself writes or talks. Like you said, personal opinion; ours shouldn't affect you, and yours shouldn't affect us. You're free to express and practice your views; we are free to express and practice ours, all to the extent that we don't deliberately hurt the people around us.

Cheers,

I agree with Ima, Leaf, and ZNZ. The fact that this website is a literary magazine website does mean a lot of us are protective of our words. And what's wrong with vowels? (sorry if any of my words make a string, my spacebar has some stuff under it) I get it when there is no vowels on car plates, so you can fit more words onto it, but my name starts with a vowel. Meaning my name in text talk (or car plate speak if you wish) would be Lv. That's it. My name has six letters, and four of them are vowels. If people wish to address me in text talk, with the name Lv, I would be very offended (:-P) actually. (not trying to sound mean or anything) And (I am probably going to sound a bit hypocritical here) I find it appropriate if you use the phrase GTG if you actualy GoToGo. Not go to the bathroom sort of thing, but a situation like, "I got to go and won't be back in an hour." that's when I find it neccessary to put GTG. LOL expresses amusements, you could also write *virtual laugh* or whatever, but I don't mind LOL. Or GTG when appropriate. And if you want to end a post, you could always say Bye! or Laterz! or Peace! etc.

Ok. Now that that's said. Laterz!

I think what you're saying is that text-speak "phrases" like gtg (I swear that was g2g back in my day...am I just old?) and brb and lol all have their place on the internet, but that you prefer, over all, to write your actual words out (i.e. you, to, for, etc.) It's definitely true that those phrases (gtg, brb, lol, etc.) are the ones that survive as one gets older, while u, 2, 4, etc., drift away. But for serious, everyone, I think almost all of you agree on this matter, so let's try and chill a little - just so we're not hurting anyone's feelings. Otherwise we're going to have to stop the thread. (Olive, just because this is at the bottom of your post doesn't mean I'm directing it at you alone!) -Admin

i think it's both g2g and gtg now. I really did think it was g2g still, but I guess we use both and they kinda mingle.
