ALL HOMESCHOOLERS!

ALL HOMESCHOOLERS!

QUIZ FOR HOMESCHOOLERS!!!!!

I was reading (as I always
do) some of the comments on one of my threads. I came across one that
said most of the kids (or teens) on the CB are homeschooled!! Is this
true?

Look at the time I submitted this.

|

| Don't worry, I'm not sick--but homeschooled. I have a little break right now! =]

Post what math you use- Teaching Textbooks.  Algebra 2.  Evil.

What grade you're in currently-  9th, but I'm doing alot of 10th grade work.  I mostly skipped 8th grade last year.

What you use for English- Well, I have spelling, literature, and writing.

What time do you finish school- depends.  Sometimes I do some schoolwork in the morning, but then take the afternoon off and finish school at night.  Other times, I do it all at night.  We're flexible.

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- My mom, but my dad calls himself the principal.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- Private schooled.  I was way ahead of everybody else so it was just an annoying experience.

What you like about homeschooling- The flexibility.  The fact that we can go on vacations while everyone's in school and not have crowds.  The fact that I get to spend a lot of time with my family. The fact that I can wake up at 9 am and not start school until 10:30 am.  Stuff like that.

Why does that drive you nuts?  Imagine the CB is a giant email system.  When you email/text/facebook/talk on the phone/chatroom, do you stick to one subject?  Heck, no.  We have conversations on CB.  If one subject leads to another, let it.  I do understand, though, if this homeschooling thread turned into a Jonas Brothers debate, and no one added to the homeschool questions.  But otherwise, sometimes we don't want to make a whole new thread for a silly little question we might have.  Or a whole new thread on a funny joke we just made up.  It really doesn't matter where you post things!!  Get it? :)

Post what math you use- Math U See.  I'm in Geometry.

What grade you're in currently- Ninth, I guess.

What you use for English- A Beka.

What time do you finish school- Uhh...  Usually between one and two.

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- Well, my mum gets my books together every day, but I pretty much teach myself.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- Public school for kindergarten. :P

What you like about homeschooling- Sleeping until ten.  Being allowed to see midnight premiers of movies.  Eating whatever I want whenever I want.  Stuff like that.:)

"Sleeping until ten.  Being allowed to see midnight premiers of
movies.  Eating whatever I want whenever I want.  Stuff like that.:)"

Aagh.

I've homeschooled all my life. I wish. :( Everyone else who homeschools says stuff like that.

Correction: I do get to eat whatever whenever (as long as I eat my dinner) And I sleep 'till 7:45, which I understand is later than some High Schoolers do.

K, that's all. I'm not homeschooled, so yeah. Peace.

Post what math you use- Saxon, I'm in Algebra 1/2 right now.

What grade you're in currently- Uhh...seventh? But I tested at an overall of like ninth or tenth.

What you use for English- Sonlight, right now, NaNoWriMo.

What time do you finish school- Well, the work can be anywhere from 11 A.M. 2 P.M., but mom counts our dance and some other stuff as school too, so sometimes we're (my sister) aren't done until 7:30 P.M.

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- Mom.  Dad was in charge of science one year and we got like five lessons in the entire year.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- Nope.

What you like about homeschooling- Ummm, more time with my family, not under the influence of bad things as much, more time to goof off (not really actually, Dad has a lot of work for us to do all the time).

I'm going to add a few:

What Curriculum do you use, if you use one? Sonlight

When you take your test, what do you use? I take the Iowa test.

Do you do more school work with the parent in charge or without? half and half.

When do you usually start school? Mom likes to start around 8, but that doesn't always happen.

How long is your Christmas break? We usually take the whole month of December off, but this year we started really late.

Do you get a spring break? No.

Do you think it's bad that we don't get to go to prom? YES!!!!!!!!!

What is your least favorite thing about homeschooling? Sometimes I have waaaaaay too much time with my family.

Thank you for the testy thingy Vida, you're good at these!

Vida's:

Post what math you use-Learn at Home. It's a curriculum.

What grade you're in currently-7th.

What you use for English-Learn at Home.

What time do you finish school-Whenever we get done with homework. :)

Who homeschools you, mom or dad-Mom. Although Dad teaches a lot about history.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled-Nope.

What you like about homeschooling-More time with family, being able to reflect on things, taking things at my own pace...there's loads of stuff.

And Charlotte's:

What Curriculum do you use, if you use one? Learn at Home.

When you take your test, what do you use? CAT test.

Do you do more school work with the parent in charge or without? Half and half.

When do you usually start school? Whenever we have time for it.

How long is your Christmas break? Um...about two weeks.

Do you get a spring break? Yup.

Do you think it's bad that we don't get to go to prom? No. A prom sounds horrible to me.

What is your least favorite thing about homeschooling? Um...having to explain it to people. And it's a little harder to make friends. And even if it's a snow day, you still have to do your schoolwork.

Andy P. C. says xthx.

What Curriculum do you use, if you use one? Sonlight, like you.

When you take your test, what do you use? Ehh, they call it the SATs, but it doesn't stand for the same thing as the normal SATs...  I think it's the Stanford Achievement Tests.  I'm not really sure.

Do you do more school work with the parent in charge or without? Without.

When do you usually start school? Whenever I get out of the shower and am done with breakfast, so sometime after nine.  Later, if I want, but I like to finish school early.

How long is your Christmas break? However long the public schools in Southern Maine have school off.

Do you get a spring break? Yes.

Do you think it's bad that we don't get to go to prom? Not really.  If no one asks me to go with them, I'll probably just get one of my single guy friends to take me, because they can invite people from other schools.  But my town's dances (even including prom) are pretty lame, so it doesn't really matter if I miss it or not.

What is your least favorite thing about homeschooling? People assume that, since I'm homeschooled, I'm an annoying nerd with no social skills.  Really, I'm just like most public schoolers.  Other than the fact that I'm a Half-blood witch.

I agree with R~D~ about getting off-topic, but if that bothers you, I will try to stay on-topic on threads that you make.

I am not home-schooled, but I am virtual schooled. It's like a cross between public and homeschooling; it's done at home, on the computer, but I have teachers and everything--but I can only communicate with them over the phone and via e-mail. Because I'm virtual schooled, some of this will apply to me, and some of it won't. I'll answer the ones that do. I do want to be homeschooled next year, though! I just can't at the moment, because neither of my parents has time to give and grade assignments.

Post what math you use- N/a.

What grade you're in currently- 7th. Next year, though, if I get to homeschool, I'd like to skip at least one grade. Probably my grade will be different in every class. I'll be furthest ahead in English, certainly, though that's all I really know. I think grade-skipping will be much easier for a homeschooler where I live, which is one of the main reasons I want to do it so much...

What you use for English- N/a.

What time do you finish school- It varies.

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- Neither.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- Public schooled, for every grade except for this one. I didn't like it much. I'm disappointed, because the actual curriculum is no better than in public school, but I certainly do prefer this for many reasons.

What you like about homeschooling- Getting up later than I normally would, going to bed later than I normally would, not having to hurry so much in the morning, clean bathrooms (The ones at my elementary school were fine, but the ones in my middle school were disgusting!), wearing pajamas all day, lack of tardies, lack of dirty cafeterias, teachers who don't get annoyed at me because I'm not looking at them and they assume that I'm not listening to them even though I always am (They can't see me! Yay!), teachers telling me I'm argumentative or rude when I'm not arguing and honestly cannot fathom what I'm doing that seems even remotely rude, having to listen to things I already know (Oh, sure, the teachers assign me things to read here, but I have my mom's permission to skim it first to see if I already know what it says. She doesn't mind if I don't read everything assigned as long as I get good grades, which is wonderful and more reasonable than any teacher I've ever met), not having to show work on math problems, not having to repeat what I say even when the person I'm talking to hears me perfectly well (this was never major or often, just the occasional).

Me [to student next to me]: I lack a pencil. Have you an extra that I could please borrow?

SNM: ...What?

Me: *repeats*

SNM: Um, no, I don't...

Teacher [to me]: Why aren't you doing your worksheet?

Me: Because I lack a pencil and therefore am UNABLE to do so!

Teacher: ...What?

As I said, nothing major, but it gets rather annoying after a while... anyway, to finish the list...

Not getting so many strange looks with no idea what I'm doing that's getting them, not having to explain to at least one person every week (My English class last year went to the school library each week. Before 6th grade, we'd only ever been allowed to check out 2 books each week, so of course I'd relied on the public library instead for the most part. I think it was a bit of a shock when people realized how quickly I read things, XD... They never really noticed that I had a different book nearly every day before then, but I think it's hard not to notice someone carrying 6 or 7 books at once, especially for people who read about one book each month, and that only because they were required to...) that no, I was not going to read all those in 2 weeks (how long you're allowed to have something checked out at that library without renewal); I was going to read them in one, and no, I actually wasn't reading them all at the same time; I just read one every day or 2, see? and repeat it until they finally understood, then wait for them to quit staring... Actually, that was kind of funny sometimes... but really annoying by the time the school year was over, and it hadn't stopped. You'd think there could only be so many people in a class... Not having to struggle through a huge mass of people just to get to the things you need (I think my former school needs a bigger hall...), not having to be deafened each day by all the shouting in the hall, then by the shouting on the bus home, not getting lost so terribly often, not having to write all my schoolwork out by hand, which takes forever... I think you get the point now?

When you take your test, what do you use? The Texas Assessment of Knowledge And Skills. I won't when I actually homeschool, but unfortunately for the moment it's my teachers who decide what I take, and so that's the TAKS...

Do you do more school work with the parent in charge or without? Without, definitely.

When do you usually start school? Um... Around 10 AM?

How long is your Christmas break? I don't know.

Do you get a spring break? Yes.

Do you think it's bad that we don't get to go to prom? My parents will probably make me go back to public school when I go to high school, but I don't want to go to the prom, anyway. I'm not interested in that sort of thing.

What is your least favorite thing about homeschooling? Well, I agree with Charlotte (I think it was Charlotte? I don't remember.), except that for me it's just my mom, because my dad's work is in an actual building, and my brother is public schooled. I also don't like that I'm sort of having trouble getting things done on time, but that's not homeschooling's fault...

@Ima: You do school online? That's so cool! I take a Latin class online, and I really like it.

I go to private school, so I'm ineligible to answer the rest of the questions, but Re: Prom: Being the anti-social geek I am, I've never really much wanted to go to prom.

Yeah, I've never wanted to, either...

I really think I'd prefer to actually homeschool than do what I'm doing now, though, really. I thought the actual learning would be more interesting, but it isn't. It's too easy. So was public school, but I'd thought it would be better...

@ZNZ: I take a latin class online, too.  Do you like it?  I don't particularly love it, but in WA we have to take a second language (is that in other states/countries too?) So I'm just trying to get through with it.  I also doing spelling online, writing online, religion online and my math and science are CDs so I do those online, too.  As you can see, I am very thankful for my laptop!!

@R~D~: Yes, I like it a lot. It's not a requirement -- it's just something my dad suggested to me, that he thought I'd be interested in.

@lav: Ooh, Gladwell! I've read some of his stuff -- not whole books, but an essay or two, and a few chapters of Blink. He's good, isn't he?
