ALL HOMESCHOOLERS!

ALL HOMESCHOOLERS!

QUIZ FOR HOMESCHOOLERS!!!!!

I was reading (as I always
do) some of the comments on one of my threads. I came across one that
said most of the kids (or teens) on the CB are homeschooled!! Is this
true?

Look at the time I submitted this.

| Don't worry, I'm not sick--but homeschooled. I have a little break right now! =]

V

Who homeschools you, mom or dad-

Have you ever been public or private  schooled-

What you like about homeschooling-

@ Ima- whenever I see an insanely long post, before I even get to the bottom, I know it's you :) I would never have the patience to make posts that long. :D

@ Kenzie- you get to wake up at *gasp* TEN???? Wow. That would be lovely. I get up at 6:30, or sometimes 5:20 for swim practice.

Post what math you use- Saxon Math, Algebra 2

What grade you're in currently- 9th, but I do some 10th grade work

What you use for English- I use a curriculum called Seton Home Study, so I use an English book written by Seton

What time do you finish school- 2-ish

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- most of my work is independent, but if I need help, mom helps me. (unless it's science, in which case dad helps)

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- Nope.

What you like about homeschooling- (like RD said) the flexibility. If you want to run some errands with mom, you can set your schoolwork aside. If you get restless, you can go outside and ride your bike. If you're hungry, you can go down to the kitchen and get a snack. If you want to go on vacation, you don't have to stick to the stupid attendance thingy. Plus, I'm not exposed to all that horrible stuff that goes on a public schools. I love my homeschooled world. :) It'll be quite an interesting experience when I go to college.

Post what math you use- Teaching Textbooks, currently Geometry.

What grade you're in currently- 10th.

What you use for English- Well, I use Sonlight Curriculum for the "core" (history, literature, and English) so various books from other publishers, through Sonlight, and assignments written by Sonlight.

What time do you finish school- Usually around 3:30 or a little after. I could probably get done earlier though, if I really applied myself instead of procrastinating. :)

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- I do most work on my own, but my dad has decided that he's in charge of the high-school students in our family (I, being the oldest, am currently the only high schooler). Since he works all day, he set up a website (his actual job is fixing/creating websites for people) for us to communicate with. It's sort of like a blog. I post stuff throughout the day, like what I learned in math or Spanish, the history reviews for the day, or the writing assignment I just finished, and he evaluates and comments on it. It's a little bit like this, actually, but with just the two of us, and occasionally my mom, posting.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- Well, I went to a private preschool, and once attended public school for a day in 5th grade with a cousin. :)

What you like about homeschooling- Pretty much what everyone else has put so far. :D

To answer R~D~ on the prom question, yes, I would love to go to prom. I think we have enough homeschooled high schoolers in my area that we could even have a homeschool one. Sadly, I don't think it's very likely.

And my Christmas break is usually about two weeks, and I take the ITBS test (Iowa Test of Basic Skills). Except this year it's the ITED (Iowa Test of Educational Development), because for some reason high schoolers take that.

5:20?!  ARE YOU SERIOUS?  I'd drown if I tried to swim that early!  But yeah, it's not ten every day.  There's a couple days I have something in the morning, so I get up at 7:30ish, and other days I get up around 8:30 just because I don't want to waste my day.

Post what math you use- Right now I'm using ALEKS, an online course. But once I get down to 25 more topics, I'm going to use Yourteacher. I'm really excited about it! I tried a free trial, and it taught me how to find the slope on a graph in less than ten minutes! It is also an online course, too. But unlike ALEKS, they teach the lessons by having something you can watch with a teacher explaining it.

What grade you're in currently- 9th.

What you use for English- In 9th grade, it's required that you do four years of literature! I don't believe that's at all right. You need grammar more than literature, in my opinion. You use grammar every day, you don't always use literature. So my mama found a Georgia public school literature book by Prentice Hall. I don't like literature!!! You have to answer these really annoying questions about stuff you read that is noramally more boring than interesting. Though thouse Caucasion mummies found in China was interesting...

What time do you finish school-  Every day, or for the year? It depends--on both.

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- Mama. Though when Papa's at home, I ask him for help in math and science.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- Nope.

What you like about homeschooling- That you can go on vacation any time!!! Kind of.

Peacing out for now,

-Hannah☺☻

Post what math you use- I'm out of high school math. I'm not actually doing math this semester cause life is kinda crazy and I'm so far ahead anyway, but the textbook I'm working through is Calculus Concepts and Contexts by James Stewart. Is hard.

What grade you're in currently- Eleventh, mostly. I'm a junior.

What you use for English- Pennsylvania Homeschoolers online AP English class. My teacher lives in Israel and is very cool.

What time do you finish school- You mean time of day? I'm never done with school. I usually have work all evening, and often on the weekends. The days of being finished by one are long gone - like three years gone.

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- I have DVD teachers for most of my subjects and an online teacher for English. My mum oversees me in general, but you could say I homeschool myself.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- I was in a private school for kindergarten through fifth grade. Then I skipped sixth, and I've been homeschooled for four and a half years now.

What you like about homeschooling- It lets me love to learn. I've lost a lot of flexibility as my schoolwork gets more and more time-consuming, but that's not the important thing. Malcolm Gladwell (brilliant journalist) has said that for work to be really enjoyable, it has to be autonomous and complex, and there has to be a direct correlation between effort and reward. My schooling has all of that, and I'm as happy as a flea on a fur farm.

@Brynne: I didn't say anything about prom, that was Charlotte. :D  But now I will.  Er, I'm pretty anti-social, too.  I mean, I love meeting new people and blah blah blah, but I get such a nervous stomach over everything, so I think prom would make me puke.  :) Not that I'm a nerdy homeschooler with no social life and no social skill. :)  Not me at all.  Lately, I've just been getting anxiety and a nervous stomach.  Yeah, it's a tad bit annoying.

Didn't see this one; sorry.

What Curriculum do you use, if you use one? Mostly Bob Jones Press.

When you take your test, what do you use? Hmmm? Not sure what you mean here. The curriculum comes with tests, and I take the other tests (PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc.) at public schools as necessary.

Do you do more school work with the parent in charge or without? My mum just generally runs my schooling. I am in charge of myself, for the most part, and it works very well.

When do you usually start school? 7:00 is breakfast three days a week; I start at 7:30. And I'm not allowed to do school in my pjs.

How long is your Christmas break? Depends on how far ahead I can get. Three weeks this year.

Do you get a spring break? If we're going somewhere; if not, I'd rather just get ahead and have more summer.

Do you think it's bad that we don't get to go to prom? There is a homeschooling organization here that provides a prom and big high school graduation every year. I'm not interested.

What is your least favorite thing about homeschooling? Homeschooling has matured me very quickly; that's great, but it means that I don't have many friends because we just don't think on the same level any more. Being comfortable with adults is wonderful, but it gets a little lonely sometimes. I do have friends my age, but they're often rather shallow relationships because I have to set aside a huge section of my mind to communicate with other kids, and that doesn't make for a great friendship. I look forward to college when (hopefully) that' won't be such a huge issue.

I go to public school, so I can't answer any of these questions.  I didn't even realize so many of you were homeschooled.  What's it like?

@ Analesia-Homeschooling is SWEET!! I <3 it. A lot of people tend to interpert homeschoolers as nerdy children with large glasses and collared shirts who are science and math whizzes. Um, wrong. Though I'm sure there's a small percentage of kids like that and a small percentage who are a wee bit crazy, as Adina puts it, we are normal people and the only difference is that we do our school at home. And it is awesome! :D

I'm homeschooled/unschooled, mostly unschooled.

Post what math you use- Saxon. Up until last year I used Singapore Primary.

What grade you're in currently- 8th

What you use for English- I've just sort of figured it out myself.

What time do you finish school- N/A

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- Mom and myself.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled-  Public school for half of third grade. *shudders*

What you like about homeschooling- The freedom, not being forced to be around toxic people at school, and not having to worry about others judging me all the time.

WHAAAAAT? No unschoolers? :) That's all good, I guess, but I'd have thought there would have been at least one :)

Post what math you use- N/A

What grade you're in currently- eighth

What you use for English- I read meaningful, classical, usually overweight books and write a bit. I am also taking a playwriting class.

What time do you finish school- As an "unschooler" school is never really finished, nor does it ever really start, because it is so informal.

Who homeschools you, mom or dad- Well, I guess you can say I homeschool myself (selfschool?) but when I want someone to tutor me, prepare me for the SATs, or explain something I read in Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, I go to my father.

Have you ever been public or private  schooled- I private schooled for Kindergarten (Montessori) and public schooled until the middle of sixth grade.

What you like about homeschooling- Everything! Sleeping till ten, being friends with people of all ages (no age discrimination, since you are not separated by age); interacting with people who follow different religions, speak different languages, have different ways of thinking and learning from each of them; eating and dressing the way you want without anybody laughing at you; all of the opportunities of using the time you could have been in school, a new way of thinking, and the fact that everyone who homeschools is a wee bit crazy. :)
