Writers Help Thread!

I saw one of these on a different forum. Sadly, that forum no longer exists. :'( But that is why I am creating this!

This thread is for questions and advice. You can ask for help making your writing better, or how to reword things. You can post samples that you think need work (but no longer than two paragraphs.) You can not just ask for help and then not help anyone. Go!

I will start. What word do you use when there is only one person infiltrating something? My dad told me infiltrate was the wrong word. I can't think of a better one, though.

Thank you soo much! I like most of these options, and I'm definitely open to a lot of these situations (Sometimes I have to make myself kill off a character because I KNOW in my heart of hearts that it would make the story so much better, but don't want to anyways).

I'm either going with Mood Whiplash Character Death/Incapacitation or Complete Estrangement That Comes With Info Leak By Nosy Best Frenemy Reporter. So yeah, I guess you could say that this isn't exactly a happy story. Or maybe Minor Character Love Interest Who Ends Up Sharing the Power Surge Thing and Almost Dying But Not Really.

((In other words, Plot Device Numbers 43, 69, and 74.))

For the record, I usually end up closer to Cynicism on the Sliding Scale.

When it's done, it's going on FP. Guaranteed.

I'm bookmarking this thread so I can come back to it later and read all of the amazing advice all of you guys are giving people. It could definitely come in handy.

My biggest problem is not sticking to tenses. If you look at some of

my earliest posts on thedragon RP, you'll see what I mean, but just take my word for it: it's horrible. Any ideas?

Pick a tense and stick to it. That's... most of what I can say.

Basically, you should read over your story periodically and flag wherever you find yourself getting out of past tense into present or whatnot. If you start to see a pattern with these deviations from your norm, you'll notice them more often and fix them earlier.

Hope this helps.

@ Bad speller,

Other than Admin's advice, type on the computer.  It normally allerts you when you misspell a word.  If you keep misspelling a word, write it longhand ten times on a piece of paper.

Scrtindte must be a bad speller, too!  My, Scrtindte! Not Mhai!

Try reading your writing backwards. It helps your brain recognize things that it might have skipped over before.

For instance: Read "Stretching gracefully, the cat clawed my leg" as "leg my clawed cat the gracefully stretching".

Works for me. My spelling used to be positively horrific.

L, is the reason your name is L (persay, instead of El,) because you were such a bad speller?

Thanks Buggies! I'm bad speller. I really can't spell but i'll try going backwards. Thanks!

No. My name is L because that is the first letter of my name (Leah) and L from Death Note is AMAZING.

I'm really bad with names, and right now I'm working on a novel about demons. I need some strange/exotic sounding names and I really can't think of any.

Baby-naming sites work really well.  Also, someone on here introduced me to Springhole generators.  I think it was Olive.  Just google it.

I used to use a baby-naming site- until someone tipped me off that they are one of the worst types for viruses. Use a book.

I use Behind the Name, myself. It's got a huge database and a nice random name generator.

Pick a common name, like Eric, and think of all the exotic ways you can spell it. Erik. Erick. Eryck. Aerik. Aeryck. Eryc.

I used this method a TON when I was writing fantasy epics for my picky English teacher.

Garthwumpian Flopp says doux. How did I come up with Garth's name? I started with Garth, added some excessively random syllables and played with the spelling. That's all.
