Character Cafe

Character Cafe

What would happen if a character could meet other characters? What if a character could leave their story/ies and discover the world unknown? The world outside their author's mind?

Okay, so basically this is just like central station at Wreck-It Ralph (I know, kinda dumb idea), except it's a cafe where our characters go. Your character can meet other characters, and in the meantime, you--as the author--will learn more about your character. Anyways, here's the form:

Character's Name:
Book they are from:
(Looks and Personality are optional)

*You can enter up to three characters, and, depending on how many people enter, you may be able to enter more*

My character:

Character's Name: Victoria Hale
Book they are from: Hidden Secrets

Victoria ran through the pages of Hidden Secrets. She wanted to get out of there. She was on hold in a creepy, locked room. Urg. Creeping past her parents in the portal, she figured she might as well go to the Café to meet some friends from somewhere far away from Colorado. Maybe even her friends from New York were there! She smoothed out her cobwebby clothing and walked to central station, locating the café. There it was! She was a bit embarrassed about her scraggly condition, but she figured other characters would understand. Authors were so annoying sometimes!

Alaina and her mom entered the cafe. I must be tired, Alaina thought, because I swear I just saw Katniss from the Hunger Games over there. Alaina and Stacy looked at the menu. This was like, the best cafe ever! It had butter beer and so much stuff from books. Oh yeah. It was called Character Cafe. That was probably the reason.

Hazel cautiously stepped into the cafe.

Lord, there were people here. And not just any people. Characters. Characters, chatting with old friends, laughing noisily, complaining about authors, and the like.

Hazel bumped into a girl, and then took a step back with a hasty apology.

"Are you new here, too?" she whispered under her breath.

The girl gazed back. Behind her was a tall woman, at least tall to Hazel, who was undeniably short.

"New here? It's a restaurant." The girl laughed breezily. "But I've never been here before, if that's what you meant."

"I'm a little nervous," Hazel admitted, subconciously tapping her fingernails lightly on her oxygen tank. "Actually, more than a little."

The girl looked geniunely confused. "Why would you be nervous?"

"Oh, are you one of those confident characters? The ones in books who always save the day by standing up to the bad guys? Because that is not me."

"Wait" - the girl leaned into Hazel and spoke in a low voice - "are you a character, too?"

"Well, yeah. We all are."

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. That might explain why I just saw Katniss, like, five seconds ago."

Katniss was overwhelmed by all the characters here. She saw America and went to go talk to her. She thought that they seemed kind of alike. The authors made them both kind of strong and tough.

"America?" America turned towards Katniss. "Oh, Katniss!" she exclaimed. "This is wonderful, isn't it? I love meeting all the other characters here." Katniss nodded.

"So," began Katniss. "Do you like your story? I mean, some characters don't like the plot the authors put them in."

America shrugged. "It is kind of hard being between Maxon and Aspen. They're both gret guys and all, but I don't want to have to placed in that kind of position."

Katniss nodded. "I mean, why did the author have to make my sister be choosed for the Hunger Games? If I ever meet my author, I'm going to give her a piece of my mind."

"Well, it was nice talking to you, Katniss," said America, walking off. She waved over her shoulder. Katniss looked around, wondering who she should talk to next.

Amicia decided to try to go up and talk to some on, but who? There where so many charecters in this tiny little cafe.

This is cool, Alaina thought. So there's a bunch of characters from all my favorite books here! Sounds like in their world, I'm a character too. Interesting. "What's your name?" Alaina asked. "I'm Hazel. From A Fault in Our Stars. How 'bout you?" "I'm Alaina. Wow. I saw the preview for your movie. You look so much different in person. Yeah, I don't really have a book. I walked here. My house is down the street."

"Er, hello." said Amicia to a teenager with long black hair braided down her back,

"I was wondering if you've actually had your book published and if so what was it like?"

Katniss thought about this for a little while and replied, "It depends, if you're a big star like Harry Potter everyone recognises you and you're a celebrity. But if if you're not that popular then it's really no different except that the author has worked out all the bugs."

In response to Nora the Singer

Victoria smiled. The older girl seemed very nice, a little more inviting than Katniss had been. "Hey, you want to get an icecream or something?"

"Sure."

The two girls went to order at the counter. In the meantime, they chatted about being a character. "Do people realize that they're characters at different times? I mean, my mom told me when I was very little, but it seems as if not everyone understand that right away. Like that girl!" Victoria pointed to a girl talking to a flustered waiter at the entrance.

"What do you mean, I'm a character?" She pleaded. "I just want some coffee!"

"I guess you're right," Hazel replied.

"So when did you realize?" asked Victoria.

Victoria watched a girl approach Hazel with wonder. I guess Victoria didn't realize exactly how famous Hazel was.

"I'm Alaina," she said, "I don't really have a book."

"Hi," Victoria said with a smile. "What do you mean you don't really have a book? Hazel and I were just talking about how some people don't realize they're characters until...well, the time comes, I guess. Are you one of those characters? I mean, I'm just going to stay here for awhile. Trying to save my world from a creepy butler is exhausting!"

"Wait, so I really am a character? I'm not real? What?" Alaina asked. "Well, of course you are real. Aren't you here? I mean you're mostly real. You're book real. That's something." Alaina was sure this was a dream. It had to be, right? She squezed her eyes shut tightly. It didn't work. So she was really something just meant for reading about. But how?

"Yes, silly, of course you're real! What are you doing shutting your eyes like that?" Victoria asked, putting an arm on the girl's shoulder to comfort her.

"I-I thought I was real," she repeated

"You are. It's just...in other characters' worlds, like mine or Hazels, your a character! Unless of course your book hasn't been published yet. Like mine hasn't." Victoria sighed. "My author is continually redoing the chapters. It's so annoying! Like today, she made my father be more attentive to detail and making lessons out of everything!  I liked him better before! Oh, well."

The girl seemed to be contemplating something.

"Sorry I'm talking so much. It's just that I'm a little exhausted from spending my summer break saving Colorado from a dumb butler. And I have no friends there! I'm so glad I heard about this Character Cafe!"

"No, you're fine. I like to talk, too." Alaina sighed. "I can't believe I'm not really that real. It's just... weird. It's nice meeting you. I'm gonna go find my mom." "Your mom?" "Yeah, my mom. What's wrong with my mom?" "I don't really see anyone in here that could be your mom," Victoria explained. Alaina looked around. "Your right. My mom's gone. But how? Mom?!"

Hazel inched away from Alaina a bit.

"What?" Alaina demanded, still in the midst of looking for her mom.

"Nothing. I just need personal air," Hazel explained.

"Oh." Alaina caught sight of the oxygen tank, instantly understood, and nodded knowingly. "I'm sorry."

"For what?" Hazel inquired, surprised.

"Well...I mean...isn't that, you know, hard on you sometimes?"

Hazel shrugged. "I'm okay."

"Yeah," Alaina replied, not actually listening. "Where did she go? Mom?!"

"Relax," Hazel commanded.

"Right," Alaina agreed. "Deep breaths."

Hazel winced.

"Oh." Alaina realized her mistake and quickly tried to redo her sentence. "I mean, yeah. Uh, no. I...uh, I...yeah. No. Um. I. I just need to relax, right."

"Right," Hazel answered, slowly.

Victoria approached the girls. "You find her?"

"No," Alaina snapped. "Sorry. Just a bit stressed."

"No big." Victoria shrugged. "Just let me know if you need me."

Alaina nodded tentatively. "Sure."

Victoria slipped into the crowd, which was dwindling gradually, to Hazel's relief. Too many people...not enough air to share. She was lucky she wasn't wheezing at this point.

"I'm gonna go get a cup of tea," she announced. "I'll be right back."

Alaina nodded, and Hazel walked away.

Alaina looked for her phone, but she couldn't find it. How'd she leave it at home? She brought it everywhere. Alaina was losing everything. "Has anyone seen my phone?"
