I get that these happen a lot, but:

It is the future.

Everyone must be the same.

If you are different, or have The Condition, you are sent to an experimental facility in the arctic.

So blend in.

Or be taken by the Holders.

Okay, so we are different/have The Condition (a disease that gives you complicated emotions + powers). The Holders take us to the experimental facility in the arctic where they basically imprison us and we have to escape. They also have the Temporary Cure, a liquid that takes away our powers for at least one hour.

Name: Experiment 13, River Beech

Age: 12 (make the age 12-13)

Appearance: Dark blonde hair, green eyes.

Personality: A genius. She's so smart it set her apart from everyone else, plus she's empathetic.

Does she have the condition or is she just different: She has The Condition and it gives her telekinesis.

Name: Experiment 25, Neave Bell

Age: 13

Appearance: She usually looks like a short girl with grayish transparent hair and gray eyes. Gray gloves and boots.

Personality: Stubborn, but loves everyone. Kind to even the harshest person, and has a good sense of humour. Clever and resouceful, and uses her surroundings wisely.

She has the condition, and her power is to change her appearance at will. And anything, too. However, if she transforms into something it doesn't mean she has those powers. For example, she can't transform into a dragon and then just blow fire everywhere.

an example: She is in a hallway with gray walls. She can make her body gray all over so that she looks like she is part of the wall. Or, she could turn into a bug. (However, it's not a good idea because she can get smooshed. Also, the smaller or bigger the thing she is transforming into, the harder it is to do it. So really, it would be almost impossible for her to transform into a dragon.)

Name: Experiment 02, S'Chenya Tekaida

Age: 13 (just turned 13 a week ago)

Appearance: Brown eyes, pale blue skin, with two "tails" on her head in lieu of hair (this, in itself, is what makes her different); otherwise normal-looking.

Personality: She was brought to the experimental facility as an infant, one of the first Experiments to be found; as such she is quiet but strong-willed, wary of anything and everything. If something is wrong or out of the ordinary, she is usually the first to notice, and she nearly always keeps her head in a crisis.

Does she have The Condition or is she just different: Just different, though some facility staff would argue that her sense of danger is almost uncanny. (She was taken to the facility about a month before The Condition was even discovered.)

Experiment 21, Vilaline (Veela-line) Raciu

Age: 13

Appearance: As a side effect of the Condition, she has naturally dark purple hair always in a ponytail, violet eyes, purplish-black lips, fangs and incredibly pale skin.

Personality: Dark, sadistic, violent, closed off, plotting, manipulative.

She has the Condition. It turns her into a vampire bat shifter. She can transform into a bat, talk to bats, and echolocate even in human form. Unfortunately, it also gives her a craving for blood of any mammal.

Name: Experiment 01, Maple Wings

Age: 12

Appearance: She has wings. These giantic wings that look a lot ike Malificent's, but white. She has blue eyes and dirty blond hair, and she's usually a little slouchy because her wings are heavy.

Personlity: The Condition gave her basically the loner traits. Shy, quiet, out of the way. Because she's Experament 01, she was the first experiment and had been there the longest, and had eventually lost hope.

She has The Condition, and it gives her loner traits and wings.

(If it isn't supposed to be physical attributes, she can just have the power of flight.)

~S'Chenya~

Here at the House, we live on Whispers.

Usually it's the dexterous or sneaky ones, like Pilfer and Dusk [Vilaline], who manage to get them. Once in a very long while a Holder will take pity and give us a few, but most of the time we must rely on wit, quick fingers, and the whims of fate. The philosophy of the House is that, since we cannot hope to join the Conformity, we must be completely isolated from it. Whispers are little tidbits of information, filched from cracks under doors and furtive glances at datapads, about everything we've never known: life in the Conformity, in the all-encompassing civilization that those gifted with normalcy have the right to inhabit. Whispers are our spirits' nourishment. We trade them, sell them, keep them, share them; they are ghosts of the wonders of the outside world. The forbidden fruit is always the sweetest, and the Whispers are our forbidden fruit.

Our culture must be nothing like that of the Conformity. Here, everything has a name, a place, has rules attached. We like nothing better than to name things, sometimes many times over. Take me, for example: the Holders call me Experiment Zero-Two, or just Two if they're feeling casual, but I, like everyone else, have accrued several nicknames over the years: Bluie, Tailhead, Number Two. The one I most often use right now is Tails. In the Conformity, everything has one name, rules dictated by those who use them, no place preordained and set in stone. It must be so interesting, but also so scary, not to have the framework of your life set out for you. We don't always, sometimes there are the Shocks when Holders suddenly barge in and make off with someone and you don't see them 'til a day or two later when they're all shaky and scared, but most of the time, we know what is going to happen several days beforehand. Schedules are amazingly accurate at predicting the future.

I suppose this is the best life we are capable of having. In between classes, when we learn things like geography (places, but not the people who live there) and math (always no more worldly than figures on a datapad), we may express our abnormality: Switch [Neave] turns her hair and eyes colors, Moody either mopes or bounces off the walls, Ninja shadow-walks around, hoping to snatch a Whisper or two from under a Holder's nose. There are many more of us, of course, than just those I've mentioned. We run all the way from Experiment 01, Angel [Maple], to...well, Baby's latest public Whisper said they've gotten to Experiment 76. We cannot leave the House, we cannot enter the labs or Shockrooms where they run the brutal tests, but other than that, we are given free rein within the microcosm of the House.

Well, almost free rein. One must be extremely cautious when dealing with the Holders. Mental [River] worked out an algorithm she calls Favor, which allows you to plug in a circumstance and immediately calculate its effect on your standing with the Holders. Everyone has a running tally. The lower your Favor, the more likely you are to get Shocked. I myself have been Shocked some 33 times in my life, and I will never forget any of them. Other punishments include losing dessert, a Holder guard on you at all times, or even denial of a toilet break or two, but none is as bad as a Shock. They are routine - this is an experimental facility, obviously there have to be experiments going on - but Shocks are perhaps the worst possible way to do it. Spring, Experiment 64, was Shocked last month and didn't stop crying for a week.

We call them Shocks for three main reasons: They come as a shock, they can leave you in shock, and...well, if you're not doing something right, the Labbies give you a shock, the electrical kind that races through your body like horrible shuddering fire.

So much world-building, so little plot... *sigh* More coming soon. Right now I am not supposed to be on Cricket.

I trip over a crack in the floor and try to stand up before someone notices my mistake.

"Cure application now in progress."

A drone with a syringe starts to come around the corner. I consider taking it apart with my telekinesis, but my logic tells me to let it do this or I will be Shocked.

I stretch out my arm. Immediately, I feel my powers drain away. I grasp desperately for my emotions, my empathy, but the Temporary Cure has taken them. With my last burst of emotion, I feel regret that I've allowed myself to be programmed by them into a robot of logic.

I follow them wordlessly, emotionlessly to the testing room.

(So BTW, the Temporary Cure also removes emotions for a least an hour.)

Neave~

They call me Switch. I can see why. Most people don't even know what I look like.

They also call me Metal-rod. I can see why. I have gotten more shocked then anyone. I have been caught so many times, trying to escape the horrors of the Holders. Once, they took me to the leader. They called him 'Red'. Wasn't very surprised, after looking into his eyes.

I have been Shocked 159 times. I'm used to it by now. I heard the Holders saying how much they wanted me killed. But I always smirked in their face. I know Red won't do it anytime soon.

As I go to the Shockroom for the... 160 time, I see Mental be guided into the labs, probably being tested. Her emotionless face told me that she had been infected by the Temporary 'Cure'. I face the Shockroom again, sighing deeply.

"Quit your complaining, 25," the Holder grumbles. The Holders usually don't speak to complaining, but most now are so frustrated at me that they curse at me anytime they like. I smirk despite myself.

The Shockroom is familiar, and I narrow my eyes at the long wires dangling from the ceiling. Those are supposed to electrify us. But that's only a part. A helmet is stuffed onto our heads, meant to put horrible thoughts into our brain. Those thoughts control us, make us seem more bad complaining we are. Experiment 18 was so weak to the helmet that his brain forever got destroyed by it. He now sulks until eternity, hating himself and everyone else.

The last torture device was a memory stealer and creator. It corrupts our memories, making our personality and feelings change. I hate this part the most. I nearly lost my name from it. Experiment 23 actually did. Now everyone calls him 'Lost', and not just because of his memory. He seems to be so lonely, and forever distant.

I shift my mind back to the scene. The pushed me into the chair, and shoved the helmet onto my face. Wrapping the wires across my arms and strapping the memory steal onto my chest, the process begun.

First there are a few electric stinging. I reacted to that without a flinch. Then there are more harder ones, which made my wince slightly. Finally two last huge ones, larger then I expected, Shocked me hard. I groaned. A few laughs came from the Holders.

Next came the helmet. I was more ready for this, and went through it easily. Then the last part. Memory stealer. I readied myself, eyeing the contraption warily.

Memories swooped around me, disappearing sofly. I clung onto a few that I knew I needed, but one fell out of my grasp. My last name... what... what was it? Oh well. I could ask Tails. She was the only one who knew my full name. But then, she was my closest friend.

It's over now, though. Now it's time to get plannin' for our next scheme.

Vilaline came up with her own nicknames for everyone, which none of them like.

Vilaline~

I transform into a bat and soar through the compound. Being a bat is good. "Who'll I drain today?" I sing. Then I see Blueface [S'Chenya] below. "How about you?" I ask. I transform back into me, human me. I bare my fangs.

"You know you'll get in trouble for drinking blood, right?" Blueface asks. I shriek at her, then leave. I go to the Shocking Room. Maybe I can satisfy my hunger for others' pain there. But the room is silent. No transgressions today. I sigh, and walk off. I echolocate and see that Model Magic [Neave] is happily chatting with Wingy [Maple] down the hall. I walk off in their direction, smiling my smile I do, the smile that everyone knows is not for them.

Maple~

When someone goes to the Shock Room, they come out strange.

Very strange.

Experiment 0- I mean, Switch, or Naive, was put there today, I don't know why. When she came out, she couldn't remember her last name.

No one really does. We made our own names for ourselves, at least I did, because I know that one of the first things they did to me was take away my name.

Sometimes I remember it, but it's only a small shadow,  and I try to grasp at it, get a hold on it, but it always drifts away.

A. That's the only thing I know. My name starts with an A.

Of course, knowing that in itself is forbidden. If you know the slightest thing about your past, they bring you into the Shock Room and take it from you.

A. My name begins with an A.

That is why some call me Angel- besides the fact that I have wings. I'm called Angel because I don't do wrong. I just don't. I never go into the Shock Room anymore except to be tested, because they can never find an offense that I have done.

A. My name begins with an A. A. My name begins with an A.

I must not forget. So every day, all the time, it goes through my head, over and over and over again.

A. My name begins with an A.

The beat of wings startles me, and I look up as the vampire bat desends.

****

In a flurry of movements, I'm in the air and flying for my life, my wings shooting very strong air currents behind me. This is forbidden, me flying. I can't do it. But I must.

A. My name begins with an A.

The Holders are on me in a minute, and I know it's best to not resist. Only remember. Grip onto that one thought, that one memory that is left for me to have.

A. My name begins with an A.

~S'Chenya~

This might be the worst lunch break in recent memory. The kitchen's out of peaches (which I happen to adore), No-Eyes and Psych took my usual spot to sit, I don't see Switch anywhere, and to top it all off, Dusk has decided that my headtails look tasty. The bat flies in, then I hear her land behind me, jeering, "How about you?" Without turning away from my egg salad sandwich, I reply coldly, "You know you'll get in trouble for drinking blood, right?" She shrieks with laughter, but moves off. Nobody likes being Shocked, a fact I have just reminded her of.

And then Switch comes walking into the dining hall, and I can tell instantly that something's wrong. Though she appears as confident as ever, her hair and skin are bright white, and I can see her hands shaking slightly as she sits down next to me with her lunch. It's only too easy to deduce what happened. I start to ask, "Switch, you were-" before she cuts me off with a more urgent, pleading look than I've seen her wear in weeks. "Tails. Listen. I need to ask you a question." She leans in close and says in a low voice, "They did it. They took something. My last name, Tails, what is it?"

So it's a memory then. That part is the worst. I've lost several valuable Whispers to the memory-stealing machine, and had to ask the people I got them from again at my own expense. I know exactly how Switch feels. "Bell," I whisper back. "Your name is Bell. Neave Bell. Got it?" She straightens up, electric blue and silver splashing across her hair, clearly relieved. "Got it. Thank you so much!" Before long, her hands steady, and she's back to her clever self with smoke-gray hair.

I relax, knowing that I was safe. It was nice to have a friend who would be on my side, who would keep my memories safe.

"I heard Angel got caught." I chuckle. "It surprises me."

"Oh, I don't blame her. I heard Bat nearly got her."

"True. She got caught as well, right?"

"I'm not sure. I hope so. She deserves it." Tails chomps on her sandwhich.

"You comin' up with some mousebrained scheme again, eh?" She smirks. I laugh and relax against her.

"I need to practice turning into small animals. If I manage too, I might be able to escape," I sigh. My last name swirls around me. Bell. Bell.

I have lost my family names a long time ago, before I became friends with Tails. I was so scared back then. I thought a piece of me had been stolen. now, thanks to Tails, I can keep my secerts safe.

"It's almost over. Lunch time." Tails interrupts my thoughts. I look at the clock. 12:29. I nod.

"Also, Mental grabbed some information while she was 'Cured'. It looks like they have a new leader."

"No Red?" After my visit with the leader one year ago, I had told everyone about it.

"His name is Jackson. At least, the Holders call him that. Mental got sent there because they thought she was too smart for her own good."

"They didn't harm Mental, did they?" I knew that if Mental got turned to the leader, he may make her less... Smart.

"No. Like Red did to you, he just sent her away."

"Why? Why don't they kill us? I don't underst-!" BEEP BEEP BEP. BEEP BEEP BEP.

"There goes the bell. Time for math class. Seeya, Switch." Tails had Math while I had to go to the testing rooms. I groan, walking into the line to get the 'Cure'.

I felt my emotions drain away, and my thoughts transfor...Int......Nothin..g...

..

...

..!!!?!!!

It's over now. The cure ran out. It feels weird, to not have any thoughts or emotions. But I still have... Pain.

This time, they tested to see if I could transform into nonliving items. It was a complete fail. I just couldn't. Next time, they are going to try to see if I can transform into plants.

They have done those tests so many times. But I know it won't work. I can't transform into nonliving items. plants, animals, anything besides rocks and materials.

I waited for Tails at the door.

"It's bedtime." I sigh. Another day gone, another escape lost.

I head out of the testing room, my emotions and powers slowly returning. I shiver as I realize how horrific Jackson was, how mindless and evil he seemed-

I shake my head. I need to focus on tonight.

I shiver again as I think about the enormity of what I've done. Tonight is the night we have personal memories wiped. I rewired the system. Instead of having them removed, they will be given back.

Suddenly Bat glides down and starts walking next to me. "What is it, Bat?" I ask somewhat coldly.

"I know what you're doing."

I freeze and feel cold,. If she turned me in, I'd be Shocked for days straight and she'd get to drink my-

"And I'm totally in."

I turned to her. And smiled.
