I get that these happen a lot, but:

It is the future.

Everyone must be the same.

If you are different, or have The Condition, you are sent to an experimental facility in the arctic.

So blend in.

Or be taken by the Holders.

Okay, so we are different/have The Condition (a disease that gives you complicated emotions + powers). The Holders take us to the experimental facility in the arctic where they basically imprison us and we have to escape. They also have the Temporary Cure, a liquid that takes away our powers for at least one hour.

Name: Experiment 13, River Beech

Age: 12 (make the age 12-13)

Appearance: Dark blonde hair, green eyes.

Personality: A genius. She's so smart it set her apart from everyone else, plus she's empathetic.

Does she have the condition or is she just different: She has The Condition and it gives her telekinesis.

"But it isn't because I like you," I say. "But I like memories." I toss a locust into the air and catch it between my fangs. It crunches. Yum. Brain Girl gives an involuntary shudder. My case of the Condition severely limits my eating range. Lunch is usually a bowl of some kind of insect, or a piece of beef. Occasionally it's pork. Also I can eat some fruits, but that is about it. The others are revolted. I don't care. They taste good.

"Tell you what," I say to Brain Girl. "I've got a couple new Whispers as well." I show her the scraps of paper I found. Newspaper headlines. "100 units each," I say. Units aren't huge and Whispers are valuable. She agrees. [A unit is about a cent. So 100 units would be about  1.00 dollar.] I sell them to her. Then I tell her, "Your secret is safe enough with me... I'm not usually the most trustworthy person, but I care about matters like this." Then I soar down the hall to the vending machine and buy a 25 unit soda and a 75 unit bag of honey-spiced crickets. I then go to my bedchamber to consume them in peace.

The vending machine is part of what makes life OK. It usually has cheap soda, some insects for me, low-quality but OK crackers, that kind of junk. We get 500 units every Saturday to spend on it. We also use this allowance to purchase Whispers when the Holders aren't around. All in all, life is better than in prison.

Vilaline~

I am a total carnivore. My vampire batness forbids me from plant life. My usual meal is either a bowl of insects (yum, crunchy protein)  or some meat fresh from the slaughterhouse. My meals tend to revolt the other Experiments. I don't care. In fact it pleases me to see the disgusted expression on their faces. It's amusing. I see the Holders take Angel away for punishment for once. I smile perversely. I don't get in trouble a lot. I've only been shocked eleven times. But that isn't because I act perfect. No, it's because I don't get caught. I throw a locust into the air and catch it between my fangs. You're allowed to do anything as long as you don't get caught.

I am one of the Experiments that find Whispers most often. But I don't share them for free. I sell them for prices between 75 units for the cheap ones and 1000 units for the more expensive ones. [A unit is worth about a cent in American money.] The money goes to the vending machine down the hall. Hey, I might be part bat, but who doesn't appreciate a good soda? I find one now. A scrap of paper.

I hear footsteps as someone comes around the corner. They aren't the steel-tipped steps of a Holder, but the soft shuffle of the facility-issued slippers the Experiments wear.

Perfect. A potential customer.

It's been so long. I'm not ready.

Even the smallest shock sends pain all down me, and when the large one comes, it's complete agony.

Next is the helmet. But that one is hard for them. They shame me about my wings, but they can't do anything about it. I love my wings. And I love to fly.

The last thing. The memories. It's been so long, most of them had returned to me. Now they leave like going down a drain.

A. My name begins with an A. A. My name begins with a... begins with a....

No! It can't be. Above all, not this. The only thing I had, the only thing I treasured, gone.

Gone.

*******
When they release me, I slump down to the floor, straining my mind to its fullest extent.

Remember. Remember. Remember. Remember.

It's no use. I throw my hands down in disgust. It's gone, just like everything else about me.

Amy.

Yes! I heard it! I know it now, it's..... it's.... a... A.....

I reach for it, I search for it, but nothing meets my grip. I lost it.

A. A. A. My name begins with an A.

I sit obediently in the memory removing chair, then remember:

Oh, drat. I didn't get to angel's cap.

I sigh. Too late now.

They put the cap on my head. I wait patiently.

You were always far at the top of your class.

I knew that.

You speak English.

I knew that!

Your name is River Beech.

I... didn't know that.

I grab onto that name like an anchor.

River Beech. My name is River Beech.

Vilaline Raciu. 13 years old.

This is all I know about myself. More than the others. I had the good sense to scratch my name on a piece of paper and conceal it when I came.

I stretch and yawn. I glance at my datapad, which tells me that it is six in the morning. I'm scheduled with breakfast with everyone at seven and then... the memory theif. Well, since I woke up this early, I decide to pay Brain Girl a visit. I jump off the bed and turn into a bat, then fly silently to Brain Girl's chamber. I transform back into human form and enter the room.

"Haven't you ever heard of knocking?" Brain Girl asks. "Oh whatever," I reply. "Anyway, you had better have gotten to my hat."

"I did. But I don't know why."

"I don't really feel safe though. So let's make a deal. If you don't rewire the system so that it DOES take my memories, I will give you my next give Whispers for free. If you do reset it to memory taking mode, I'll turn you in. Deal?"

She looks at me. "Fine. Deal."

I bat up again and soar out of the room and into the tiny circular yard. A cloud of bats fly past. How beautiful and free they are! If I could join them... fly away with them... but no. The invisible forcefield enclosing the yard prevents any form of escape. The windows don't open and are made of not glass but a thick, strong, but perfectly clear material. The only way in or out of the House is the door. It is at the end of a long hallway that has security systems galore. Experiment 43 tried to escape before, and the security systems killed him. To turn them off, you need a Holders' ID.

After a quick breakfast of fruit, I go with the Holders to the memory thief room. I glance at Brain Girl, giving her a look that clearly says, Remember our deal or else. She nods.

I have an about average Favor. I'm generally unpleasant, but I'm never caught doing anything wrong. The Holders walk me into the room and I sit down in the chair, in my aloof position that says, I'm not doing this because you told me to.

The Holders put the cap on me. They turn the system on and...

Your name is Vilaline Raciu. You once spent long hours looking at bat pictures and real sleeping bats. You have a younger sister.

It ends there. I'm let out of the room. I smile as I bat up and fly over to Brain Girl. But I cannot stop the last sentence, bouncing around my brain. You have a younger sister.

Neave~

I walk into the Shock room, the Holders behind me.

Neave Bell. Neave Bell. Remember.

First comes the shocks. No big deal. Then comes the helmet. No big deal..

Next comes the memory stealer.

NEAVE BELL NEAVE BELL.

But what happened after was to surprising.

Neave Bell had a family. Mother: Mellie Bell. Sister: jessica Bell. Father: Jackson Bell.

Jackson left the family and turned Neave Bell into the Holders.

Neave Bell knew that the exit of the Holders Place was next to room 3T covered by a small blue curtain.

Then it stopped. My heart pumped, and I held the last memory. Room 3T. covered by blue curtain. 3T. blue curtain. curtain. 3T. blue curtain. Room 3T.

I raced out of the room, my hearting soaring. I must tell the rest. I must be free.

Vilaline~

However, before I get to Brain's room, I'm called up to be on the "welcoming committee" for an Experiment 78. I groan but report. I'm in for a shock when I get there, though.

Experiment 78 is named Aylaline Raciu.

She has the same powers as me and is just as sadistic. In fact, she even looks like a miniature copy of myself, only with a more childlike build and her hair in pigtails. She has been taken through the memory "stealer" that has been rewired and she looks like "Oh my goodness."

So I show her around, all the while secretly conversing with her. Yeah, I'm her older sister. No, I don't remember our parents. Yeah, it's livable in here. But the tests aren't. And that is why we need to escape. Just then, Model Magic bounces around the corner. "I'll tell you where the exit is if you stop calling me Model Magic," she says. "Alright. It's a deal," I say. She leans down and says in a low voice, "Room 3T, covered by a small blue curtain."

I smile. "This is monumental. But if we are to escape, we need a team."

Neave~

I laugh, hugging Bat. Then I realize what i did. I shrink back.

"Nah, it's okay. I'm way too happy to be mad," Bat chuckles. I nod my head.

"So, first off, we need Mental."

"Yup."

"And Tails... Maybe Angel?" I frown in thought.

"Yeah, bring Angel."

"And..."

"My sister."

"Fine. But you're takin' care of her." But as I look at her, I feel sorry for her automatically. "Nevermind. I will help."

"good. We're ready, Mo-"

"Don't."

"Okay, okay... But we need a plan."

"Oh, and by the way, I need to tell you something. the leader is my father." It takes a while for Bat to know what I'm actually saying.

"...WHAT?!"

"Yeah. I got my memories back, and it said my father was Jackson Bell." I reply smoothly.

"But it could be anyone Jackson!" she groans.

"It also said that he turned me into the Holders."

"Okay, fine."

A team, you say?

~S'Chenya~

I think of being in the memory stealer like being on a tiny deserted island in the middle of a tsunami. The water is gray, stifling, crashing over me with a roar like a thousand thunders. And then the stealing starts, the wave receding, pulling whatever it can snatch from me out to sea, forever lost. Despite my best attempts at seawalls and towers to store the precious memories, they always get something. A Whisper, someone's name, geography lessons...but this time is different.

I brace myself for the tsunami, but it never comes! Instead of a wave, there's a wind: a joyous breeze, cool and refreshing, wholesome instead of destructive, sweeping me away in a rush of memory. What's happening? It hardly matters, as long as it stays as long as possible. It's the best sensation I can remember feeling. Ever.

Your name is S'Chenya Tekaida. You came from an orphanage; no one knows who your parents are. Your life's dream at age eight was to fly a spaceship to another world. A truth you've heard several times through the grapevine is what the Holders call your headtails: lekku. They call you a Twi'lek.

The wind stills, and I can almost cry out with joy at what it's given me. The Lost Whisper, as I call it. I knew there was a name the Holders had for me, for people like me, but no sooner would I hear it than it would be gone, stolen. I'm back in the room, feeling giddy and light-headed. Twi'lek. Twi'lek. Where's Switch? I have to tell her! Make sure it's never stolen again! My headtails - no, lekku - are quivering with excitement as I struggle to keep my face impassive.

As soon as the heavy iron doors to the Shockroom seal shut behind me, I'm off at a sprint! I nearly run headlong into a crowd of Experiments near the Entry, where new Experiments occasionally come in, and immediately pick out Switch, as nobody else's hair could be quite such a vivid magenta. I am breathless, charged, effervescent, my feet hardly seeming to touch the ground as I run over to Switch. I barely notice Dusk standing next to her as I say in a near whisper, "SWITCH oh Switch you will not believe what just happened!!"

"Actually, I do," she replies, sounding almost as ecstatic as I feel. "You got them back, didn't you? Memories? We did too, and...Tails, you have to promise never to tell the Holders or anyone else because the Holders could get them, but we've found a way out of here!"

I stifle a squeal. "Really? Really really you mean it? Oh my gosh this is the best day of my life you know what I just got?"

"What?" I can practically taste Switch's anticipation.

"The Lost Whisper, Switch. I got it back, it said these are called lekku and I'm a Twi'lek. Twi'lek, that's what I was trying to remember for weeks last year, oh Switch I can't believe it!" She has never seen me quite this happy before, which makes sense because, well, I've never been this happy before. "Whatever you're doing to get out I'm in, I know there's not much we can do but at least we have to try right, I hate the Shocks but this was just as amazing as they are awful you know, is Dusk coming too, oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my GOSH..."

************

So, in case you couldn't tell through the really excited chatter, S'Chenya's in!

I laugh at Tails happiness despite myself. She hugs me like twenty times, and then squeals again.

"Look, calm yourself." I forgot that Bat was here.

"Yeah, Tails, we need to get out." I lower my voice to a whisper.

"We are gonna bring Mental, Bat's sis, and Angel. Also we need a diverson. We need to somehow distract the Holders."

"...Oh my-Oh, yes. Um.. How are we suppose to distract the Holders?" Tails asks excitedly.

"Keep your voice down! And this is why we need Mental. Some way or another she can grab a good plan... I don't trust myself to create one, seeing how much shocks I'd been gettin'."

"I run up to them.

"Run. Now. They'll catch on soon. Go."

They are all shocked.

"Look, I'm going to put on a little play for them. A diversion. You guys run. I was an excellent actress, according to my memories. Now run. I'll meet up with you in, er, twenty minutes or so."

They run and I scream. A Holder runs in, followed by ten more. I scream and begin ripping the place apart with my telekinesis, buckling over in "pain". There are shouts, yells and...

silence.

I look about. The Holders are all unconscious. I run to the blue curtain area. The others were waiting.

"Go!" I say, "GO! GO!"

"Great show, Mental," I tell her, smiling. Actually smiling, and I'm as surprised as anyone else is. Then the curtain is opened. It opens to...a blocked wall. Ayla gives Neave a look and says, "Liar."

"No," I say. "This has been blocked, but it isn't a not-exit. This whole thing is a hollow tunnel. Mental--"

"River. River Beech," she cuts me off with.

"River, you may do the honors."

"This'll take me a while..." she says uncertainly.

"That's okay, we have time," I reply. (Ayla and I have gone over to the unconsious Holders.)

Faye opened her eyes, only to close them again from the sudden light. After some rapid blinking she could finally look around her. She looked at the man guarding the door and gave him a wry smile. He shifted uncomfterably. Faye sighed and reached her hand up to scratch an itch on her nose, he hand didn't move. Faye looked down to find she was held with leather straps to a table...again.

Faye looked at the man again, his nose was crooked. Most of Red's goons had a crooked nose, and that was due to Faye. She had taken a liking to punching them. Faye was the first 'experiment' even though her number was seven. It worked like this. She was taken to meet Red, he gave her the liberty to choose her number, she chose seven. Faye sighed again, another punch, another shocking, and she ALWAYS punched someone when she got out, it was almost non-stop shocking. But they finally restrained her.

Faye's thoughts wandered to the other 'conditioned.' They were smart but they probably hadn't noticed her, when she wasn't restrained that is. Faye had watched and listened, never being noticed, she wasn't really the noticeable type anyways. They may have heard rumors from the guards of her, the fist they called her. Faye gave a slight smile at that thought.

She looked at her restraints, she could escape from them for sure, but not without being seen. It wasn't the usual, 'Hands behind the back' restraints, Red had learned. Faye smiled as she thought of his crooked nose, yes, he had been the first victim of her fist. Faye sighed, she was doomed really, her only chance of escape, the other "Conditioned," most likely thought she was just a myth made by one of the expiriments, a shimmer of hope, but no more.

Faye sighed as the door opened, catching a glimpse of a large group of men guarding her room, that made Faye proud. Red walked in and smiled, holding the 'cure' as he called it.
