I greet Valeria and introduce her to Felicity. "Sorry if I come off as odd," I tell her, "I'm kind of feared. I'm the best mage at school, just like you're the best singer, and I can withstand Ricla's paralysis."

Felicity blushes at the "best singer" compliment and gasps about the "I'm not paralized by Ricla" comment. "Does she know?" Felicity asks in a hushed voice. "No," I say, "and I'd rather keep it that way."

The gong sounds for our first class. Blast, I forgot to check the schedule!

(BTW, Atla is actually one of the best at balancing act because she is very light, thin, and graceful.)

Later~

I really don't know how long we argued, but Lea suddenly stopped and reverted back to English. "You can borrow my books if you want."

Shocked doesn't even begin to how I felt. "Wait, what?!"

"You. Can. Borrow. My. Books. If. You. Like." Lea says this very slowly, as if implanting every word deeply in my brain.

"What's your name, by the way?" she adds.

"I'm, I'm Isis. " I'm still quite flustered, "You're Lea, right? And yes, YES, I'd love to share books! Thank you!"

And so, dear Diary, that is how my day turned around, slightly. Some of the classes were, lets say, rather stupid, but what not- I have found a friend.

Lilia~

We are sitting in Fashion class, where Princess Anna is givinbg a lecture on trimming. Anna is the only professor who acts like a kid herself. She bounces across the room as she speaks and uses slang. She is usually my favorite teacher, but today the class is boring.

Trimming. Lace trimming, satin trimming, ribbon trimming, where to put it, how to use it effectively...

I am so bored.

Saraphina slips me a note.

Trimming, shmimming. Get me outta here!

~Phi

I write a response and slip it back to here.

I know. So boring!

Hey, meet me outside in the courtyard after dinner.

~Lil

Why?

~Phi

I know how we can cheer ourselves up!

~Lil

Umm...how?

~Phi

One word: Fa-

Anna is looking over my shoulder.

"Lilia, there is to be no note-passing in class! Hand it over, missy!" Oh, man. I've never been caught passing notes before! "Oh, and stay behind after class." Adds Princess Anna.

She grabs the note from me and rips it up. She tosses the pieces into the trash can. She looks at me superiorly.

I hope class isn't over for a long time.

Saraphina

Lilia's cheeks heat up. Princess Anna flips her hair suspiciously and sashays over to another group of students.

"Wow, nice job, Einstein." I nudge her elbow so she knows I'm joking. But Lilia stays completely still--she just stares at the wall in front of her like it's some fascinating art exhibit at the museum. I sigh and lightly blow upward to get a few strands of hair out of my face. The class starts passing around multicolored ribbons, needles, and plain white thread to practice trimming with.

I select a rose red ribbon for myself and a light green one for Lilia. She's still frozen and rigid at her desk. It'll pass. It always passes.

"Here, Lil," I say gently. She takes the ribbon from my fingertips gingerly, not moving any other muscles. "You know Anna. You're not in trouble. She's one of the good teachers." Lilia nods like a robot. "You'll be fine," I conclude.

After a few more minutes of attempting to trim, the bell rings. I pack up my stuff but stay at my desk while the population of the class quickly dwindles, leaving only three people left in the room.

Soon to be two.

"Saraphina, I'm sorry but you'll have to go. I need to speak with Lilia privately. Oh, you're going to be late for your next class--I'll write you a pass." Princess Anna produces a small pink pad of paper and a plume, and starts scribbling.

"But," I protest. Lilia looks at me with sad little heart melting puppy dog eyes. "Please, Miss."

"Get to class, Saraphina."

I really can't risk being late. I have a perfect attendance record. I look back at Lilia with pleading eyes.

"Oh all right," she says and rolls her eyes, "go."

"Thanks," I blurt out, relieved. "I'll talk to you at lunch, okay?" Princess Anna hands me the pass. I scramble out of the room and make my way to next period.

Dear Diary,

"I can't believe those girls in sewing today," I tell Lea. "I mean, note-passing? Even with Professor Anna, that's such a bad idea."

Lea looks uncomfortable. "Welllll, yes, it's definitely not a good idea if you want absolutely perfect A++, but if you don't mind settling for mere A+'s, it's kinda fun."

"Fun!?!" I laugh.

Lea continues. "I mean, how many schools have you been to?"

"None. I've always had private tutors."

"See, that's what I mean. You really haven't learned how to have fun, have you?"

"Of course I have!" I cry indignantly. "Solving quadratic equations is fun. Memorizing Shakespeare is fun. I do too know how to have fun."

A snobbish looking girl over hears us and giggle nastily. "Lighten up, will ya?" she hisses.

Saraphina

Right as I walk out of the classroom, I come face to face with a girl in my class, who's also walking in the hall. Her name's Isa or something. I barely know her.

"You know, you really shouldn't pass notes," she says. I stare at her in disbelief when I realize she's talking to me.

"Why not?" I ask confidently, but not in a mean way. She might be tall and I might be short, but I can still look her in the eye.

"Because," she says verrrryyyyy slowwwlyyy, exasperated. "If you want to get good grades, you have to follow the teacher's rules. Duh." Okay she didn't actually say duh, but I could see it in her eyes.

"I do get good grades." What's she getting at?

She laughs. I narrow my eyes. "What? I get straight As. A++s, actually."

The girl halts and looks taken aback. "But - but that's impossible!" she cries.

I cross my arms and peer up at her. She notices my hurt expression and quickly redoes her sentence.

"I mean - I shouldn't have said that. It's just...you're so..."

"So what?"

"I don't know." She sighs. "Extravagant, or whatever. You're, like, a real princess. I was being stereotypical."

"Yeah," I agree, "you were."

"I'm sorry," she says. "Really. What's your name?"

"Saraphina. Yours?"

"Isis."

"Pretty."

We begin to walk to class together. "So you really get straight A++s?" she asks again, skeptical.

"Yup. Do you?"

Isis nods. "What's your GPA?"

"A 4.8," I say. "You know, from extra credit."

"Seriously? Me too!"

"That's crazy!" I grin. "We're like the same person!"

"I know! Wait... I know something that you can't top," she says and smiles with pride. "I'm fluent in four different languages."

I give her a smile back. "Cool."

"Thanks. How many do you know?"

"It doesn't matter."

"Yes, it does. Tell me!"

I turn away, embarassed. "Seven," I mutter under my breath.

"I can't hear you," she urges.

I take a deep breath and look back at her. "SEVEN," I repeat.

Isis stares at me. "Seven different languages?"

"Yes," I say meekly.

She opens her mouth and closes it, then opens it again. "Which ones?"

I rattle them off. "English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, and Russian. Eight, really if you count Elvish. I'm learning Indonesian right now, but I'm not fluent yet."

She shakes her head. "Wow, that's unbelievable... "

I really like this post, Daphne. I do just have one clarification: Isis speaks lots more than 4 languages. Except, while it seems Saraphina speaks "real" languages, Isis speaks fantasy ones. She inhabits a world with countries like Hindeshe, Makner and Brenal and knows every one of their languages. I think I mentioned this in a earlier post???

I smile at Isis.

"I mean, it's not like I pass notes either, but I can understand why others do. You know? People who aren't classified as complete and total nerds."

She looks exasperated, and I hurry to change the subject.

"Do you want to, uh..."

Just then, a nother girl comes up to us. She completely ignores me, and starts talking to Isis. I sigh.. tipical. I stare at my feet and twiddle with my dress a sthey caht on and on and on...

Oh I'm sorry!! I remember in one of Atla's posts she said the "nerds" could speak 4 languages so that's what I used. I just assumed she was talking about you.
