Chatterbox: Inkwell

St.Owl sat in

St.Owl sat in a compartment by herself, reading a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, trying to ignore the butterfiles flapping around in her stomach. Yet again, she pulled out the letter with the crumpled Hogwarts seal and read the acceptance letter fondly. A real, true, for-sure invitation to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!

She clutched it close to her chest and sighed, like some girls do with love letters. She pinched herself yet again, just to make absolutely positive she wasn't dreaming.

It hurt.

She wasn't dreaming.

Aaand another mass apology.

School just started up again for me, so I may be a bit busier now, and post more infrequently. I'll try to make sure I post every other day, but judging by the times of today and yesterday, I won't be able to get on the CB until around seven, mostly.

That being said, today's mini-story!

________

Over the Rainbow was an unhappy girl.

She thought Hufflepuffs were supposed to be friendly and welcoming! But instead of a "Hello! Welcome to the best House in Hogwarts!" she got stony silence. Even the girls sharing a dorm with her wanted to temporarily switch.

She touched her face, which was a blotchy red, as was the rest of her skin. It was just color, though. All the little lumps were gone now. If they had been there, she would still be at home, on the couch.

And then there was the other students. They didn't like her name. She supposed there were quite a few people that had weird names- those two Ravenclaws, St.Owl and Dragonrider, and that Slytherin Somebody with her friend Shadowdancer were just a few. But still, who has a first name like "Over"? That's a preposition! Who has a preposition for a name? It was downright stupid, that was what it was. And some of the meaner students started calling out to her in the halls. Why couldn't they understand that she just wanted to be called by her last name? Tonks did it. Why couldn't she?

She pushed open the door to Greenhouse Two, ignoring all the stares that came her way. Instead, she joined a tray where Hermione, the Gryffindor, Booksy, the Hufflepuff that had actually welcomed her, and another Gryffindor girl Rainbow didn't know. She moved away as soon as Rainbow came near.

Booksy made it her business to roll her eyes. Rainbow smiled gratefully. At least Booksy and Hermione liked her.

Professor Dou started talking, but Rainbow wasn't really listening. She was a good student, but today she has finally been swallowed up by loneliness and a petty teacher wasn't going to rescue her.

However, the sudden appearance of someone that went totally unnoticed by everyone else did.

This someone had icy white hair. In fact, everything was an ice white except for her eyes, which were icy blue instead. It was as if everything was in deep freeze around her; all the plants were coated with ice and withered as she passed. She was wearing white earmuffs and carrying a number of dull brown pots, which ruined the icy look she had.

"Who are you?" Rainbow breathed. She was in awe. This figure gave off a look of obvious power, and she was drawn to the aura.

"I'm a princess. You should know." The figure's voice was strangely pinched and haughty, and Rainbow didn't like it one bit.

"Actually, I don't," Rainbow replied, fighting to keep her voice straight.

"I'm Princess Icicle, you idiot. Now let me throw these baby Mandrakes around so I can leave. This is a big waste of time."

 "What are Mandrakes?"

Princess Icicle gave a long, exaggerated sigh. "You really don't know anything, do you? Mandrakes can kill. Now stop asking me stupid questions and leave me alone. I want to get back to Headquarters."

"Wait, did you say Mandrakes can k-"

But Rainbow was interrupted as Princess Icicle unpotted the first plant. It was large, with a mouth and eyes, and it was screaming.

Rainbow covered her ears with her hands, but the Mandrake kept on screaming through her palms. Princess Icicle had unpotted the others, too, so that five screaming Mandrakes were unleashed in Greenhouse Two.

Her job done, the sarcastic royal opened the door, walked out, and took off those ridiculous earmuffs. They must have done severe damage to her delicate ears. She'd sue the company later.

 ***

Meanwhile, everyone in Greenhouse One was frozen. Professor Dou has frozen with his hands cupped around his lips, telling everyone to cover their ears. A few people had their ears covered (like Hermione and Booksy) but others were frozen in odd positions. Dragon dung dribbled onto the floor as the Gryffindor girl who had walked away earlier had tried to bring the fertilizer back to her pot.

Rainbow, meanwhile, had started towards the door. She saw how Princess Icicle had left; she snapped her fingers and an ice slide appeared. In a shower of sparkles and glitter ("Ugh," said Princess Icicle, "I really need to get rid of that side affect"), she had climbed to the top of the slide and slid out of sight.

After the students from Greenhouse Two, and Professor Dou, didn't show up for the rest of the day, the staff sent a few people down to retrieve them. Luckily, one of the supplies they had brought were earmuffs, and they quickly potted the Mandrakes. Everyone became unfrozen.

Professor Dou in particular was happy.

He hadn't had to teach the fifth years, and the teachers potted five of the Madrakes for him!

Blech. Sorry guys, I'm having a brain fart. No inspirations. So I'm going to go onto the "mystery" part. Did I forget anyone's AE? Let me know and I'll write them in.

______

  Devil Owl hated his job.

A messenger owl. He was a messenger owl. Sending... sending messages! What did they think he was, an owl?

Yeah, who did they think he was?

And now he wasn't even not sending a letter! He was delivering one! They used him as an owl made for messaging! He was sending a message! It was tyranny!
Hmmm, tyranny. He should try that sometime.

And then a water droplet fell on his wing.

He swore out loud.

"COME ON! I'M BEING A DELIVERING OF MESSAGES AND I WILL NOT TOLERENATE RAIN! IT'S WET AND.... WET! RAIN IS VERY WET! I HATE RAIN!"

"Devil Owl, shush! You're near a village! We can't have you shouting like that, they'll look out of the windows!"

Feather, of course, had brought an umbrella.

"I DON'T CARE! RAIN IS WET!"

She rolled her eyes. "Five minutes, Dev."

She lasted three.

Soon two human figures were huddled under a roof. One of them was wearing a large, sandy-colored jumper, the same color as her hair. Her eyes were blue and she had bat's wings sticking out from under her back. The other had large purple hair and no wings, and a black jumper, and purple eyes. That was Dev. The former was Feather.

They were both very, very cold.

Soon the rain let up and the two continued on their journey, Dev morphing back into St.Owl's pet the barn owl. Two more minutes and the wiedler of vegedables was swooping into the window.

It was time.
