NEW POETRY CLUB

NEW POETRY CLUB 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, so this is the second poetry club I've created. The last poetry club got through three poems before it died...but it had an AMAZING discussion, especially on the poem "A Dream Within a Dream" by Edgar Allen Poe. If you want to join the poetry club, first please find time to read the discussion for that poem, found on pages four through six. It really was an amazing, deep discussion. Here is the link:  http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/inkwell/node/176516?page=3

NOTE: It is never too late to join. Anyone can drop in at any time.

Anyway, let's get started! Here is how it will work, for now.

In a nutshell: we choose a poet and one of their poems, discuss it, then at some point, once we've had a good discussion, a prompt will be given and we will write our own poems based on the prompt, which will relate to the poem. Or it may simply say, "Write a poem inspired by this one." Then, once we've done all that, we move on to a new poem.

First, we vote on a poet. You can start listing ideas for nominations. At some point, I'll lsit all the nominees, we vote, majority wins.

Whichever poet we choose, we will start out with one of their poems. if you don't mind, I would like to post the first poem. After that, whoever wants to post the poem can do so.

Once the poem is posted, a schedule will be made, resembling something like this:

1. Share the poem. (READ)

2. Vocab Person, define words. (DEFINE)

3. Discuss the poem, its meaning, its feeling, how we would have changed it, whatever you want to discuss about it! (DISCUSS)

4. Prompts are given, we discuss it and write our own poems. (WRITE)

5. Discuss each other's poems, compare it, etc. (WRITE)

If you're wondering what Vocab Person is, that's if one of you would like to volunteer for listing any possibly unknown words (not necessarily words you don't know, but words somebody else might not know) and their definition. That would help to understand the poem.

So, please join! Even if you won't be able to be extremely devoted to it...the more people the better!

Two more people than we start the voting!

Though of course, even after we have ten people, more can always join!

Never mind, it's okay that we have eight people. We can start.

Here are the nominees. Keep in mind that it doesn't matter who comes in second or third or fourth, because the next time we vote, it will be a clean slate. We may have new nominees, or we might not have some that were on the previous nominee list.

If there is a tie for first, we will have a tiebreaker.

You may only vote for ONE poet of these:

Emily Dickinson

Mary Oliver

Robert Frost

Maya Angelou

Tennyson

Barbara Groce

Edgar Allen Poe

Lewis Carroll

Langston Hughes

I am voting for...

Mary Oliver. I'm not familiar with her poetry, but judging from skimming through some of her work, I think it could be cool to discuss.

I vote for Maya Angelou. If she wins, can we do the poem about the caged bird?

CAPTCHA says each. Wow, Teacup, you said a real word!

I'd like to join. I was hoping we could analyze Plath, maybe?

If I remember correctly, I introduced you, Owlgirl, to Mary Oliver. I have her book House of Light, as well as Dog Songs and one other that I can't remember the title on. She is amazing! Just the way she is able to connect thoughts to paper so easily...wow.

I know that probably no one will vote for Barbara, because she is the least well-known. However, someone asked for some modern poets, so I suggested the writer of my favorite modern poetry book ever. In other words, I'm voting for her :)

I vote for Emily Dickenson. Mostly because I have read some of her poetry before and I like it.

I am voting for Robert Frost as he has many good poems. We have a book of his poetry and I would be willing to put down ones of the less well known poems. By the way, I think I know you in real life, Mei xi.

Really? Mei-xi isn't my real name.

When is your next standardized test? What grade are you in? What do you think about math class?

These are personal questions, and if you don't want to answer them, then that is fine.

I vote for either Robert Frost or Maya Angelou.

This is Owlgirl. Sure, you can join. Anyone can join at any time. You can vote on a poet from the list now.

@Arin: Sorry, though you can join and vote, since the nominee list has already been created, you will have to wait until the next time we vote in a poet (which shouldn't be too long away) to nominate Plath. But like I said, since you're in the club now, you can vote for a poet of the official list.
