Chatterbox: Inkwell

CB Spirit Solo Write

This is a solo write slightly based off of the Werecreature RP, where CBers gain the power to assume the form of an animal at will. Maybe you were thinking about it as you went to sleep one night…

...and woke up in a beautiful garden the next day. You don't know why you're there, or what you should do. As you explore the garden, though, finding new friends (and enemies) all along the way, you have a feeling something bigger might be going on here...

I’ll accept 11 CBers, maybe one and two more if they don’t apply too late. No two people can have the same animal. Here’s the sheet:

CB Name:

Appearance as human:

Personality:

Animal:

Heightened abilities:

Anything extra:

The plot will be developed as we go along; I already have an idea for this.

A few things:

1.) All people who join will be MCs, but the ones who joined first will likely be featured more.

2.) No diary entries or other pieces, please. This is written by me, a solo write.

3.) I will not accept anyone after all the spots have been filled, unless you ask very nicely. Absolutely NO one can join after I've cut it off.

Their eyes fluttered open to the muffled sound of singing birds, the feathered animals' voices calling back and forth to each other. Sitting up, they suddenly realized they had no idea where they were. What was this place?... it was a beautiful garden, to say the least. But it was also scarily unfamiliar. How… how did I get here? Pressing their palm to their forehead, they racked their thoughts, trying to think of how they would have arrived here.

Finally they stood up and slid off the perfectly made bed they had woken up on, hesitantly stepping onto the dewy grass.
“Hello, there,” a voice suddenly said, echoing off the domed, glass ceiling yet ringing in their ear. They jumped, spinning around in search of the person who was speaking. The voice was changed so they couldn’t tell age, gender, anything at all. The disembodied voice laughed, a sound like a chiming bell. “You must have several questions, I expect. Unfortunately… I may not have all the answers. Or maybe I do? Either way, this is something you will need to learn for yourself.”

They waited in confusion, but the voice wasn’t appearing to continue their speech. Slowly, they looked around them. They could feel a sharp, cold wind blowing from their left, but a sultry and warm one was swirling from their right. They sighed, shaking their head. It did seem they’d have to do this on their own. They took a step towards the warmer air when a few last words from the voice startled them, setting their heart beating fast again.

“Oh, one more thing. Welcome to the Garden of Fallacia.”

Are we allowed to comment encouragement or draw fanart, if not interfere? Thanks for hosting this!

Fan art and encouragement are fine! I would love to see anything you draw. I only didn't want seperate posts because I have a very specific idea about how I want to the story to progress, that's all.

Also, you're welcome! I'm really excited about writing it and I'll try my hardest not to let it die. :)

Yay, I grabbed the last spot!

. . . But Booksy took the barn owl. Ah, well.

CB Name: St.Owl

Appearance as human: White-blond hair extending to about the shoulderblades. Eyes a little lighter than sky blue. Has contacts and can't see anything without them. Usually wears t-shirts, yoga pants, and tall boots.

Personality: That's a little tough. I'm introverted in general, but very peppy with the people I know well. I often speak before I think, but more in terms of "that was a stupid, unneeded comment" than "wow, I said something really mean." I'm also incredibly obsessed with any fandom I belong to, and often can't restrain myself when someone asks a question and I know the answer.

Animal: Snowy owl

Heightened abilities: Keen eyesight-- including seeing in the dark-- and heightened hearing. Oh, and flight, of course.

Anything extra: Nope!

Part One

~~

Tiny flecks of red and yellow glowed in the coals as a lone figure sat around them, relishing in the warmth emanating from the embers. Pausing for a second to poke the fire with a stick, blackening the end of the wood, the figure leaned back and breathed in deeply, stretching their arms until they quivered. Then they suddenly dropped forwards, boring their eyes directly into the center of the fire. The flames suddenly began to trickle over the coals, lighting them until there was a reddish-yellow fire blaring there, lighting up the surroundings. Slowly, as though by essence of magic, the flames changed from a bright orange to all hues of blue and pink, dewy green and velvety purple. The person reached their hand inside the fire, ignoring the burning heat as if it were a clear pool of water, and pulled out a tiny carved symbol on a chain, the animal it portrayed still pulsing with heat. Setting it gently on its right side, the person waited until it had cooled to a shimmering silver, then plunged it hand back in to retrieve the next.

Gradually, over the course of several minutes, thirteen small charms were laid out next to each other, connected to thirteen snaking silver chains, with links so fine they sound like crumbling sand in one’s hand. A wide smile slowly spread over the person’s face as their gaze wandered over each charm, their chains spread out on the grass.

“Oh, this’ll be fun,” they murmured, chuckling softly at the thought of the people’s faces when they arrived. Grabbing the fistful of charms in one hand, they scaled a nearby tree with the other clenched around the trunk and balanced precariously on a branch, the thin twig swaying under their feet. Unable to hide their excited grin in anticipation, the person sprung off the branch and launched themselves into the air, scattering the necklaces over the garden, then, with a sudden whirling of wind, vanished into the night.

On the ground, the embers in the ashes faded to a glowing orange, then to a dull red, then they finally gave way to the blackness of night.

“...of Fallacia.” At these words, Ember’s eyes snapped open, and she sat up, chest heaving in sudden terror. Almost immediately, though, the unspoken threat of danger dissipated and she was able to look around herself, trying to make sense of the place she was now in. A whisper of breeze hissed around her, blowing a cool air down her neck, and tall trees encircled the bed she was sitting on, out of place in its forested surrounding. “H-hello?” Ember called, testing out her voice. It echoed around the woods, but nothing replied but the haunting cry of the wind.

Suddenly Ember felt very cold, and fuzzy spots of blackness began to appear in her eyesight. Coughing, she shook her head and tried to clear it, and within a moment the dark haze had dispersed. Ember took a deep breath as she struggled to hold back her panic and fear, then tried to get up. Stepping off the bed, she put one foot on the grass to make sure it was safe, then stood up more steadily, forcing more power into her voice. “Hello?” she shouted. She waited for a few moments, and then--

“Heeeello?” a response came, muffled but still understandable. Excitement filled Ember’s body, and she shouted out again, hoping the person would be able to come find her. Suddenly the bracken rustled behind her, and she whipped around to see another girl with scruffed brown hair, hastily tied in a ponytail, and blue glasses framing her eyes. She stopped short when she saw Ember, who standing still, unsure of what to do.

“Hello,” the girl said cautiously, not coming any closer. “Who exactly are you?” Her voice was guarded and wary, though not filled with contempt.

“O-oh!” said Ember, surprised by her sudden appearance. “Hi! I’m Ember, it’s nice to meet you. Do you…” Ember hesitated for a second, debating over whether to ask her. “Do you know where we are?” The girl snorted under her breath, throwing a glance over her shoulder to check if anything was behind her.

“Of course not. Why on earth should I know? I just woke up in the middle of a forest in some bed and heard you shouting like a maniac.” Stung, Ember backed away a little bit, worry twinging in her mind. If this girl didn’t know either, she might really be lost forever.

“Wait--hey!” Ember started as she saw the girl begin to walk away, back in the direction she came. “Don’t leave--um, what’s your name?” The girl turned to her, an eyebrow raised.

“And why should I tell you that?” she asked coolly, not even waiting for response. Ember jumped after her, pushing through the leaves.

“Because--because there’s no one else to tell it to!” she said desperately, almost tripping over an errant tree root. The girl stopped short, her sweatshirt ruffling in the breeze. Ember loitered behind her, hoping for an answer.

“It’s Danie,” she finally said, deigning not to continue. Ember let out a small breath in relief. She’d been afraid that Danie would have left her completely alone in this place, with nothing but the wind and shadows and filtering sunlight to contend with.

“Well, hi Danie!” Ember chirped, forcing herself to remain optimistic. Surely, with time, things would get better. They had to! Danie didn’t say anything, just continued on her steadfast path through the woods. For nearly ten minutes they walked along in silence, the crunching of leaves beneath their feet the only sound. Brushing aside a low-hanging branch, Ember felt her legs begin to get weary. Sooner or later they’d have to stop to rest, though she didn’t want to be the one to tell Danie. She could see, though, that the other girl’s steps were beginning to falter and slow with exhaustion from the long trek through thick shrubbery.

Suddenly, from somewhere near her left, she heard a rustling sound, like paper being turned over. It was so sharp it was someone had thrown a book near her, but that couldn’t be. I mean, no human could hear paper, especially not in a loud forest. But when she looked to Danie for confirmation, she saw that she had stopped, face contorting.

“Do you hear that?” Danie asked, listening, and yet again they both heard the rustling of a flipping page.

“It’s over here!” Ember said, shoving a branch aside with her shoulder and breaking off Danie’s path. Breaking into a run, she found herself in a clearing with a bed directly in the middle of it, with a person hunched over it, a book clenched in their hand. Surprised, the person jerked up and turned around, her eyes widening around her rounded glasses. Her pale brown hair fell over her shoulder as she jumped off the bed, the book tumbling from her hand.

“Who are you?” shouted Danie, crossing the clearing in a few leaps.

The girl looked terrified at the forwarded approach, and for a second she seemed unable to speak. Then she shook her head and stood up a little taller, regaining controls of her nerves. “I’m Booksy--” she started, but she was cut off by a low growling resonating behind them. Whipping around, Ember saw seven lean bodies of thick-furred wolves enter the clearing, pelts bristling, glistening fangs dripping with saliva as they sprang to attack.

This is fantastic, CL! I loved the prologue and how you incorporated the name "Embers in the Ashes." I could clearly envision the scene talking place and it was fantastic. As I read, I thought, Great StarClan... There are thirteen. This isn't going to end well.. Keep on writing! I eagerly await the next part.
