The Writers Club!

So, this is like a writers workshop where we can discuss books we're writing, get help, critique, etc. We can post chapters, or bits and pieces of books. We can build our character, get a fuller plot line, or do some much needed workd building! We can help each other think up titles, or fillers. Okay, you get the idea. Let's start! Anyone who wants to can join, and you can come and go as you wish! Don't be afraid to ask for help!

I have a bit of inspirational writing that has helped me a lot when I'm stuck, despairing, or confused about my writing...it's by one of our own dear CBers. I copied it like a year ago and printed it out. I didn't print the name with it, but I think it was Katy, which is probably Katydid. She IS wise and mature, after all.

I don't have time to post it now, but maybe this weekend...OMIGOSH THIS WEEKEND IS CHRISTMAS!

Oh, and I have a story idea that I'm really excited about. I think I'll choose it for my new story on New Year's Eve. I will also post it...later. Because I need some help flushing out the plot.

May I join? Or is it too late?

This is a secondary character of a book I'm working on on BaB. I need a little help developing him.

First Name: Levi

Middle Name: Doesn't have one.

Last Name: Oldman

Species: Human

Skin Appearence: Reddish-tan, covered in scratches, very rough.

Right Eye Color: Dark, coppery brown

Left Eye Color: Dark, coppery brown

Hair Appearence: Black with lighter, brown-gold streaks running through it from being outside all the time, dirty, longish (chin length? Like Bucky Barnes's hair, I guess) and choppy because when he does cut it, he uses a knife.

Clothing Appearence: "...like crude camoflague..." -that's my basic desciption in the book. Brown pants, tunic, and boots with green and lighter brown paint splattered on it. He is a hunter, that's why.

Size: On the taller side, skinny, has a bit of muscle

Personality: Grumpy, moody, not open to most people. But, willing to help others.

Usual Mood: Grumpy, a little bit snarky.

Parents Names: Dead. His grandpa, who he lives with, is named Arthur Oldman.

Siblings Names: None.

Pets Names: None.

Home: A cabin in the woods with his grandpa.

Hobbies: Hunting, but it's more of a way of life. He also scavenges for things to use and sell.

Interests: Hunting, tracking, trapping, and anything to do with nature I guess.

Peeves: People who don't think before they act, when his traps don't work, the dark (which he is scared of)

Powers? None. Is a really good shot, though.

Conditions? Is afraid of the dark.

Backstory: He is supposed to be the boy in the nursery rhyme Bye, Bye Baby Bunting. (It's hard to explain.) So, his dad when out hunting one day and never returned, so he was stuck living with his grandpa, who is based off of the nursery ryhme It's Raining, It's Pouring.

Any suggestions?

This is a great character! My only suggestion is to work on his family tree more. Find out the names of his parents and great grandparents. Does he have cousins? Uncles? Aunts? Is he related to other characters in your story? Does he know if he is? Family trees are a great way to help with world building. They also make the story saeem more real and engaging. Your characters will seem more alive, and your readers might be able to connect more. I enjoy the basic description! It allows readers to kind of find their own mental image of him, making him more relatable. Good luck!

Thanks, Ember! Yeah, if anyone has any awesome Victorian Era/old fashion-y/1800s names they'd like to share, I'd be happy to hear them.

100 Paper Cranes

So I have this story idea that I'm going to start soon. It's about this girl (based off me) who is folding 100 paper cranes. When she finishes the last one, she is transported to this world where everything hangs on one paper crane. It keeps the people alive, keeps the world together, etc. Then, after she gets there, the crane is stolen and destroyed. The people start dying, and the world starts ripping in half, just like a piece of paper. She can fix it by folding a new crane, but it has to be folded out of special paper that is only made in this other world. So she needs to go get it.

That's the general idea, but I need some help fleshing it out. Suggestions?

Thats good. Actually, that would make a good short story, and there is a lot of potential for improvement, and a longer novel.

That sounds like a really good idea. Is it inspired by the thousand paper cranes girl from Hiroshima?

I think the apocalypse type occurrence would have to be as abstract as possible. Do you know what I mean? Not as much a physical, solid, effect....I mean it does have physical, solid effects but in general it's abstract.....don't know how to get the thought out.

I think this can be very good if, like you said, you flesh it out while still keeping its original, abstractish quality. That would make it unique.
