Chatterbox: Inkwell

Have we forgotten the beauty of everyday life?

Caught up in our fantasy worlds, we focus on magic and war, but the sun peeking through the trees is just as magical. The death of a friend just as shaking.

We consider our own lives boring. Uninteresting. Unworthy to write about.

No.

In this RP, we will prove that even realistic stories can be moving, magical, exciting. That the best writers (like us) can magnify something mundane into something huge. Wonderful. Extreme. Terrible. Our character will interact by: School, friendship, family, anywhere. Your character must be connected with at least three others.

Charrie sheet:

My first charrie:

Name: Hania Samara

Age: 13

Grade (if in school): 8

Nationality (let's get some diversity): Syrian refugee

Any disabilities or disorders? She doesn't, but her sister has PTSD.

Personality: She’s really quiet at school, but she talks at home. I’ll develop her much more later on, don’t worry.

Backstory: She and her family fled Syria in 2012, her sister getting PTSD from all the terror. She had many friends who died, and lost her personality as a result.

Appearance: As I said, she’s Syrian. She wears a headscarf. Not much else to add. Average height and everything.

Other: Not really much

My second charrie:

Name: Anna Bergen

Age: 30

Grade (if in school): She’s a teacher.

Nationality (let's get some diversity): German Jewish.

Any disabilities or disorders? No

Personality: Much better than normal teachers. She connects with the students on a deep level, and always offers advice. Again, I’m not saying much here, I’ll develop her more later.

Backstory: Her grandparents fled Germany during the Holocaust. After the war, they both returned to Germany, having forgiven the country (they were extra special and kind, okay?)

Appearance: Pretty average teacher look, with light brown hair and modest clothing.

Other: None

This RP is very different from normal RPs, which is good for creativity, so please join!

Name: Edward "Eddie" Zhang

Age: 13

Grade (if in school): 7

Nationality: Chinese American (his grandparents moved to America from China)

Any disabilities or disorders? Mild anxiety

Personality: Perfectionist, striving to relax and have his own cool vibe but is constrained by his strictly Asian, perfectionist upbringing.

Backstory: None much. Has an older brother named Nelson who is in 12th grade who is always perfect. Is pressured by his parents to get great grades and do amazing at trumpet and be a perfect little Asian boy. He loves jazz music and wants to be a musician, but he's years ahead in math and science due to his intense upbringing. His culture is fighting with his personality. He wants to be American and Chinese, but his family has never really dropped their old customs.

Appearance: Tall and skinny, with typical Asian facial features and a mop of shiny black hair that falls over his eyes. Wears sweatpants and sweatshirts most of the time.

Other: None

Name: Kendall Benassi

Age: 15

Grade: Ninth

Nationality: Italian

Any disabilities or disorders?: None

Personality: Pretty cheerful. A bit naive, Kendall tries to be friends with everyone. S/he considers themself a healer of sorts, and does their best to get people to smile. They are plagued by insecurity, though, always worried that there will be that one person that makes their life hell.

Backstory: Kendall is gender fluid. S/he lived in Italy as Milo, but, after immigrating to America, came to terms with their gender and got their parents to change their name to something more gender neutral. Kendall's name isn't official yet, but no one calls them Milo (this means they'd still be registered as Milo on attendance lists and such).

Appearance: Brown hair cut pixie style and shocklingly electric blue eyes. Kind of short, usually wears jeans and plain t-shirts.

Other: I'd like them to be in the same school as Anna! Also, I used s/he and them in the charrie sheet, but generally Kendall requests to be called by him unless otherwise specified (being a boy for most of his life, and still being sexually male, he thinks it's better than being called "them" all the time).

Name: Jackie

Age: 11

Grade (if in school): 8

Nationality (let's get some diversity): French Jewish

Any disabilities or disorders? Really easily distracted? Does that count?

Personality: Sarcastic, carefree, and REALLY geeky

Backstory: She's ahead in her class, has been pushed ahead her whole life, but just wants to have fun, book filled parties and always have a new story to geek out about. She's also lonely cause nobody else feels the same way.

Appearance: Bobbed curly hair, brown eyes, light skin. Doesn't wear anything modern like ripped pants, pierced noses and ears, and baseball caps; she prefers plain dresses that don't have too many colors, shirts with collars, and simple accessories; watches, scarfs, and berrets.

Other: She's chocaholic(addicted to chocolate), she talks to imaginary people in her head(it's not weird at all), and she's rather fond of salmon, onion, and cheese sandwiches.

I love the diversity so far!

Name: Elena Mariana

Age: 14

Grade (if in school): 8

Nationality (let's get some diversity): Argentina

Any disabilities or disorders? Not really

Personality: Incredibly hard working. She is desperate to do anything to prove that she can be just as good as any American. This sometimes results in her overworking herself. Spanish is her first language, so she has a strong accent. She is for the most part fluent in English, though she has trouble with pronounciation and spelling sometimes. She is quiet, but not necessarily shy. She is kind and confident.

Backstory: She lived in Argentina until she was 13, when she had to move to America. She grew up relatively poor, but eventually her family worked their way up to the middle class. She doesn't quite know how things work in America yet.

Appearance: Long dark brown hair - sometimes she braids it, sometimes she leaves it down. She is short and has dark brown eyes.

Other: She is a really good runner and goes to the same school as Hania and Gabriella.

Here's my other charrie!

Name: Mia Soo Ko

Age: 12

Grade: 8th (she skipped a grade)

Nationality: South Korean American

Any disabilities or disorders?: High- spectrum autism that isn't visible in the way she acts or looks, but more in her personality if you get to know her.

Personality: She's really smart and is completely attached to her cello. She's one of the best players in the state and is working on nationals. She doesn't interact with the world not because she's autistic or shy, but because she just doesn't pay attention.

Backstory: Her dad was from South Korea, and he met her mother who is South Korean in the States. She has a younger sister in 9th grade that is involved in every club in school and practically the president of all of them and an older brother in 10th grade that plays baseball. Her family's not too strict, and she's a bit wealthier because her dad owns a large tech company and her mom is an attorney.

Appearance: She's thin and pale with dark brown almond eyes, high cheek bones, and curly (she's the only one on the family with curly hair) jet black hair that goes down a bit past her shoulders.

Other: None

Cool idea Mei! Where you said, "The sun peeking through the trees is just as magical" , Ugh, LOVE that. Because it's true, it really is. We take for granted things like that. The sun was just coming through my window then, and I just love little things like that.  :-)

Name: Linnéa

Age: 13

Grade: Seventh

Nationality: Swedish (Yay! :-D)

Any Disabilities or Disorders? Minor asthma (I have this in real life, btw.)

Personality: Really shy, quiet, only talks when she's spoken to. She's had a very rough past and, doesn't like to talk about it. She doesn't have many friends, and her general outlook on life is very dim. She doubts herself a lot. The only times she shows any boldness is when it comes to her brother, Edvin. She's extremely protective of him, and won't let anyone mess with him. This is virtually the only time she shows bravery, but I'm going to have it come out more throughout the story. Also, can she make a friend with someone?

Backstory: Linnéa was born in Sweden, where she lived on a farm with her parents, her sister Annika, her brother Edvin, an two dogs. Then one day, when Linnéa was only 11, tragedy struck. An unexpected blizzard swept the country, and while the family was coming down a mountain (they hiked a lot) the snow was just too deep, and it avalanched down the mountain, burning everyone but the dogs, who managed to dig out Linnéa and Edvin. But by the time they got home, it was too late for the rest of the family. Linnéa knew she did the right thing by taking her brother home, it was the only way they'd survive. But she still struggles with a lot of guilt.

Appearance: Waist length white-blonde hair, blue eyes, fair lightly-freckled skin. She's average height, and usually gets stared at for her unusual clothing.

Can she go to the school Anna teaches at? (Funny, my real name is Anna. XD)

I would love if Linnea and Aspen could be friends. I think they would really get along considering they both had a bit of a rough past, and have distinct tastes in fashion.

Wow! I love the idea!

Name: Miya Kita

Age: 14

Grade (if in school): 8

Nationality (let's get some diversity): Japanese American

Any disabilities or disorders? She has mild, not medicaly diagnosed anxiety. Most people don't know about it, though.

Personality: She's shy and quiet and wants, above everything, to fit in. Most people don't understand her and make assumptions about her, and she has for her entire life been the outlier. She likes to read to get away from her life and lose herself in another's struggles. She has big ideas, but rarely shares them, and expresses herself through drawing. (I'll develop her more later as we go)

Backstory: Her great-grandparents on her mom's side moved to the US from Japan, and in World War II they were placed in the same internment camp, which is where their children, Miya's grandparents, met. There, they fell in love, but after the war they got separated and didn't see each other for another five years. They met by accident on a train station in Boston, where Miya's grandfather, seeing something familiar in the lady sitting across from him on a train, diliberately got off at her station and went up to talk to her. They recognized each other, and were maried six months later. Miya grew up to hunderds of stories of the horrors of the Japanese internment camps and her grandparents' time there. Her father moved to the US to go to college, and ended up in the same college as her mother. Miya has grown up with a huge mishmash of Japanese and American culture. Her father's family is Buddhist, while her mother's family is atheist. At home, her mother in father speak a mix of Japanese and English, and eat a mix of Japanese and American food. As a result, a lot of her life has been divided between two cultures and two worlds. A lot of her life, she has been asked to chose between one culture and another, making her unsure if she belongs to either. It has made her stand out when she would rather fit in, and made her often shy and anxious in social situations. Although she knows that she should be proud of her herritage, she tries to hide it in order to fit in, while at the same time hiding her American identity from her Japanese relatives. She has not yet found her true self and identity, and often wishes her life was not so divided in two.

Appearance: Average height, although she wishes to be shorter, dark hair cut in a line from her ear to her chin, and bangs. She has deep, soulful eyes. She normaly wears skinny jeans and t-shirts, your average teenage stuff.

Can she and Eddie be friends? I think they have really similar problems.

submitted by Zeus, Idaho
(February 17, 2017 - 8:57 pm)

Sure thing!

Also, adding on a bit to Miya's personality: She writes poetry and is really creative in that, and loves observing the world around her. She tries to be kind to everyone and often pushes her problems to the background in an effort to understand everyone elses. She doesn't trust easily, but if you earn her trust you get access to a beautiful world of thoughts. Very few people ever do, though.
