Chatterbox: Inkwell

You live in

You live in a land that is divided in two. The eastern side is a hot barren desert, where the temperature never dips below a sweltering 85 degrees Fahrenheit (except for during some nights, where it can drop to 70 or rarely 65, which is still very warm compared to most deserts at night). The people there have never seen snow, hail, sleet, or any rain that is harder than a quick five minute downpour or a light shower.

The western side is the exact opposite. Snow falls constantly, never seeming to end for about 3/4 of the year. This period of time is called "The Storm." The other 1/4 of the year is called "Summer," and it is the time when some snow melts, and the occasional blade of lush green grass dares to poke itself through the many layers of powder that blanket the soggy ground. The temperature during this season never rises to anything above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but it is still a season of miracles to the western people. They have a huge festival at the start of the season, and another one when the first snow falls, and "Summer" is officially over. The people on the western side have never seen a perfectly clear blue sky, or seen more than a few inches of uncovered ground at one time.

One night, the two sides mysteriously switch. When people wake up, they are greeted with weather that they have never seen before, but only heard in legends that they assumed to be myths. A huge blizzard slams into the eastern side, and a heat wave turns the western side into an enormous puddle. No one knows how to live in their new environments, and something will have to be done that has never been done before. The two sides will have to work together. Only those who work together will survive this brutal swap.

------------------------------------------

Anyway, I hope you guys like my idea! Anyone can join, and there's a maximum of 2 charries per person. When I think enough people have joined, I will start, but if anyone wants to join right after we start, they still can. Our charries will be the people who team up with each other to help everyone survive in case you couldn't tell. Here's the charrie sheet, I'll post my charries soon. :

Age (10-16)*:

Original side (Eastern or Western):

Snow~

I stare at the ceiling.

I would have left my siblings and forced by way through that barrier today. That's...disturbing. I just really wanted to feel that strange, almost otherworldly force open up around me so that I could step into the desert land. In the bunk bed below me, Evergreen groans and mutters something about sparkly porcupines. For some reason he was...affected by the barrier.

He had forced me to pull him home in the sled, where he sat stonily silent, thinking. Several times Pine had asked him what was wrong. All he said back was: "It's magic. Magic at work. Magic changing." "There's no such thing as magic," I had replied, struggling to pull the sled over a particularly slippery patch of ice. "Of course there's magic, all around us!" Pine had intervened encouragingly. I thought I was the only one with common sense.

Thinking back over the day, it actually crosses my mind that Ever could possibly be right. Or at least partially right. Then I come back to my senses. Magic? More like overactive imagination...

I pul the thick fur blanket up around my shoulders. As a result, the Ice Games magazines and advertisments stashed at the foot of my bed (I'm starting to run out of all to hang them on) slip and slide noisily.

Outside, I can hear that the snow has stopped falling.

Name; Kinilli

Age; 10

Original Side; Western

Apperance; Abnormally dark skin for her side of the world, although pretty light still. Very short black hair that used to be REALLY long, down to her feet.

Personality; Rebel, always wondered what the other side of the world was like. Once dug up as much snow as she could during summer, wore really light clothes, and got hypothermia... that scene basically says it all.

Other; Likes cats.

~~~~~
Name; Arlo
Age; 10
Original Side; Eastern
Apperance; Dark skin but a tiny bit lighter then normal- not abnormal like Kinilli though. Black hair, always wears head-scarf like hat.
Personality; Studious, always takes care of little kids.
Other; Drinks a lot of water... not a good thing in a desert.
~~~

And hese are my two charries! I feel I didn't do a good job on apperance, so I might comment with pictures. This is a really cool RP, Dragonrider!

Feyre~

The next day, Mama has to leave for work. Again. She says she'll be back in three days. I don't mind that part, as this has been happening since I was little. The part that does grate against me is that Luz has to go with her. Call me a brat, but I hate letting Lucien go more than ten miles away without me.

"Don't disappear on me," I whisper teasingly into my sibling's ear as I hug him goodbye.

"I can't make any promises, Ashes," he responds with a wink, then he steps through the door and he's gone.

After a quick breakfast of berries and nuts, I make up my mind. I'm going to go to the border today. I step outside and immediately notice that the temperature is significantly lower than usual. I reach the border and see that the strange white stuff isn't falling either. Confused, I pace parallel to the borderline. I jump ten feet in the air when something cold and wet lands on my bare arm. Faintly, I hear shouts from across the border. What is happening? Why is the "snow" crossing the border? This isn't meant to happen.

Sudenly, I am thrown to the ground as a noise that sounds like the world being cleaved into rings through the air. I am knocked unconscious and when I awaken, a boy that matches Luz's description perfectly is leaning over me, his wintry gaze worried.

________

So basically, I just made the sides switch. Hopefully this is okay. I really wanted the plot to move along.

Warning: this will be long. Very long. Skim through the last part unless you want some somewhat interesting information on the Izots family.

Evergreen~

Something's wrong. I felt it back there at the border. Like the air was...sick or something. I could feel it descend on my, pressuring my on all sides. It felt awful, almost as bad as...well, too much heat, for one thing.

Early in the morning, I slip out of the lower bunk bed and tiptoe across the hardwood floor of Aspen and my room. Aspen is a very iight sleeper, which can be handy as he leaps straight out of bed at any midnight emergancy, but is also annoying when I'm trying to sneak out unnoticed. I don't even bother to change out of my pjs. Very carefully, I slowly pull open the door. It squeaks almost imperceptibly, and I cringe, heart pounding. If my family knew that I planned on going out alone, they would never let me out of the house. Thankfully, Aspen continues sleeping. I'm surprised, and grateful.

After that little scare, I know the rest will be easy. Father is on a trip with some of his employees finding  some hard-to-get materials for his store, and Mother is in bed with a fever. I grab my coat from the hanger and step into my fur-lined boots. I don't bother with snow shoes because I know that we haven't had a recent snow fall for a couple of weeks, so the area around our house is pretty packed down. Sneaking out the back door, I step into the freedom of a crisp winter morning. Actually, pretty much every morning is a "crisp winter morning." However, sometimes we have those "freeze-your-nose-off Antartica-rivaling winter mornings." As I pass the shed, I look longly at the silver and blue glinting through the slats in the wooden door. Ah, the much-coveted snow mobile! Only Father is aloud to drive it, and occasionally Aspen. He was banned from taking it out of site of the house after he starting showing off at high speed, crashed and dislocated his shoulder (again). I learned a few very interesting words and phrases from my older brother that day. Pine wasn't around or she would have lent me her earmuffs.

Snow crunches under my feet and comes back up mixed with clay. A steady dripping sound echoes around the roof. Can we possibly be having a thaw? We hadn't had one in so long. Perhaps we're in for a warmer summer, I decide. I pass Grannie Bird's hill and keep walking on and on. My legs feel tired and my toes steadily get colder, despite the warm boots doing their best to keep out the wetness of the snow and ice. Turning back to look at our house, already fading into the distance behind some of Pine's namesakes, I realize that the sensible thing to do would just be to go back and forget about the border. But curiousity makes me keep walking.

We've explored almost up to the border before, all because Aspen was curious. However, we hadn't ever gone far enough to feel that weird pressure. My thoughts flip and flop inside of my head as I walk on and on. Boredly, I try to name all the bones in the human body, but get mixed up with the hands and arms. Snow and bits of clay keep crunching beneath my boots. The slight shimmer of the border doesn't seem to be getting any closer, and the wind is rising at a steady pace.

Aspen~

I'm jerked awake the second Evergreen's sock-clad feet hit the floor. Opening one eye, I watch up silently slide out of the room. Thank goodness he's being considerate. I think as I try to fall back asleep. Then a new realization hits me: since when is that kid considerate? For a few seconds I consider getting up to interrogate him, but I decide against it. Hey, maybe he's learning some manners... I contemplate as I fall back asleep.

~

"ASPEN!" Instantly wide awake, I jump off the top bunk as soon as I hear Pine's foosteps and yells. Pine forgot my preference for a nickname. This couldn't be good. Wrenching the door open, I run into the hallway and shake a few arren stands of blonde hair out of my eyes. With Father gone, I'm expected to be in charge of the house, which does include keeping annoying younger siblings in line.

"Oh great. What'd the little sneak do? I knew something wasn't right when he tried not to wake me up," I ask a frantic-looking Pine.

"His coat's gone and the weather's really weird," she replies.

"A blizzard?"

"More like a...a...reverse blizzard." I don't have time to ask what she means. Even as she says the last few words, I'm already rushing down the stairs to grab my coat and boots. Evergreen can be really annoying, but I love him very much and can't let anything happen to him. Even though my heart is racing, I force myself to keep my voice low and calm.

"Pine, don't tell Mother anything unless I don't come back soon—"

"What are you going to do?" She questions, her eyes round and wide.

"I'm going to take the snow mobile—"

"Aspen!"

"Don't worry, I'll be careful. I promise that I won't crash, or at least, I'll try—"

"ASPEN!"

"WHAT?" I yell, exasperated at her interuptions.

"I'm going too."  I stop zipping up my coat.

"No. You have to stay here. Take care of Mother and the animals. I'm leaving you in charge. You...know how to use a gun, right?" I inquire, thinking of wolves and theives and other horrors. Pine purses her lips.

"Aspen-Kallio Izots, I am not helpless." Normally, I would be mad at her for using my full name, but now...gosh, I love my sister. And Evergreen. I couldn't imagine life without either of them. Pulling open the heavy wooden door, I turn back with a smile.

"Hey, I'll come back, okay? Promise."

And I step out into the roaring wind.

A reverse blizzard that seems all wrong.

~

AHHH! I promise I'll catch up to you, Kestrel! Aspen will rescue you when he finds Evergreen at the border. Pine

Pine~

I pace back and forth two and from the door. Follow him? Stay home. Follow him? Stay-

I half groan, half yell in frustration. I look over at our husky, Frost, and give him a command.

"Guard."

I grab my light blue cloak and swing open the door. The temperature is rising, and I can see some ground poking out of the snow. This can't be happening.

I close the door, and a warm wind hits my face. I try to follow Aspen's footsteps, but they are beginning to melt. But pretty soon, I can see his blonde hair that I usually can't see because of the storm.

Pretty soon, I reach the border where Aspen has already found Ever, and is yelling at him.

"Guys!" I exclaim.

"Pine, what- what are you doing here?! I told you to stay HOME!"

"ASPEN!" I yell.

They both look at me wide eyed. I haven't yelled in forever.

"DON'T THINK YOU'RE THE RIGHT ONE HERE, BECAUSE YOU'RE ACTING LIKE AN IDIOT. QUIT YELLING AT THE BOTH OF US AND GET A GRIP! WE HAVE A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM GOING ON, YOU STUPID, NO GOOD, HALF WIT OF A-"

Ever stops me by holding his arm out, and I realise that I'm close to punching Aspen.

"Weather is affecting everyone," Ever mutters.

"Either that, or she's just being a stupid girl-"

"Snow!" Ever yells.

Something's diverted my attention.

"Guys, look," I say, like nothing happend. I point towards the border. "Is that a person on the ground?"

I'm laughing and smiling and half-crying, because I just watched The Boy and the Beast with my younger brother so I learned that yelling at a sibling is really sort of a love langauge. Ahhh! I love that movie. Okay, end rant.
