Chatterbox: Inkwell

Small-Town Magic RP

~

Lewisville, the smallest town in Massachusetts. 2017. This is a town where everyone knows everyone else. But it's also a town with a secret that only a select few people know: the mysterious island off the coast contains more magic than there is in the rest of America- possibly the whole earth.
You are a kid in Lewisville, learning to sail. You are dared to sail out to the island...and what you find there turns your world upside down.

RULES:
1: Only one charrie per person, please, unless you are meeting the requirements of Rule 2. The only reason I have three is because they are the protagonists of my novel.
2: I need one or two charries to be snooty, stuck up popular girls with no sail number. If you make one of these, you may also make another charrie.
3: No magical powers or over dramatic diseases, etc., please. They should be fairly normal people -- just the island is magic.
4: Please, please, PLEASE try not to make Mary Sue or Gary Sue charries.
5: We will start RPing promptly on August 5th. An unlimited number of people can join until then, but that is the deadline.
6: You must give consent for me to use your charrie as a background charrie in my novel. Until you specify Yes or No, I won't allow you to RP. If you reply No, you can RP, but will not be used in the novel. If you reply Yes, I'll give you full credit for the character in the novel.

Happy writing!

This is going to be short because I've got to run.

Sophia ~ My mom drops me off outside the building, about five minutes before the meeting starts. If I was two years younger, my mom would have taken the time to walk in and make sure I was alright in the new envierment but I'm not and my sister has her silly ballet lessons.

Slowly I walk into the building to find that there are about ten kids sitting in folding chairs. Up at the front of the room, there are two older guys who I assume ate the coaches. As I sit down at the back, one of the coaches says "Hello. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Alex, and he's Luke. The other coach is Luna, wherever she is. Introduce yourself when I point to you."

"I'm Ocean Kelly." The first girl says.

"Assan Burke."

"Kaila Fenbourough."

Alex points to me and I gulp then manage to say " Sophia Chavez."

The names continue and I kinda zone out for the last ones. Coach Alex continues and says "Today we'll split into groups by experience. One group with each coach. My group is Lilah, Ethan, and Logan. Luke's group is Ocean, Kaila, Sophia, and Zora. Luna's group is Assan, Hugo, and Iris. Any questions?"

As we walk to the docks, I try to stay in the back.

Ocean~

I'm talking to Kaila, somewhat relieved that my childhood best friend is going to the same camp as me. Familiar faces are always a medicine for anxiety.

Suddenly we are all called inside the small building, and I notice ten folding chairs. I pick the turquoise one at the end, and when Kaila's about to sit next to me in the dark blue one, this boy comes between us, late, and sits next to me instead. Everyone else from the camp ends up in the seats. Well, except one that remains empty until another girl with dark hair enters the building and hurriedly sits down. I offer her a smile, and she smiles back, looking relieved that she's in the place she needs to be.

I get bored easily as we wait for the coaches to start talking, so when a guy does, I pay no attention. Well, until he points at me.

"Ocean Kelly," I offer, hoping we were doing intros.

I dodged a bullet.

The kid next to me says, "Assan Burke."

"Kaila Fenborough," Kaila's light blue eyes stare intently at the back wall.

The girl who was late replies, "Sophia Chavez," and nonchalantly messes with a string from her shirt.

A guy with light brown hair and an apparent streak of turquoise coughs. "Logan Miraz."

"Hugo Roux," says a boy, who looks to be about my age, and who has an amazing French tint to his accent.

A girl looks around and says, "Zora Yasmin Myers," saying her middle name a bit quieter than the rest.

"Ethan Bannister," the next boy says with a smile.

"Lilah Kreuzkamp," replies the girl next to him.

"Iris Mircah," the last girl says.

"Today we'll split into groups by experience," Coach Alex declares, louder than all of us combined. "One group with each coach. My group is Lilah, Ethan, and Logan. Luke's group is Ocean, Kaila, Sophia, and Zora. Luna's group is Assan, Hugo, and Iris. Any questions?"

I try to raise my hand before interrupted by Coach Alex.

"Well then! Get to your boats!"

I roll my eyes before Kaila walks up to me. "At least we have the same group. What's your question? I say your half attempt to raise your hand," she jokes.

I scoff and look around. "What time we have to be back. I'm guessing around 1300 or so, for lunch."

"Oh," she replies before shrugging. "Well I'm sure Coach Luke will tell us."

He's talking to a kid, so before he arrives, we walk out to the dock, regrouping with the rest of the people in our group.

"I'm sure from intros you already know," Kaila begins, facing Zora and Sophia. "But I'm Kaila."

"And I'm Ocean," I say with a smile.

"Zora," Zora laughs. "And don't say Yasmin if you value your life."

We all laugh before Sophia speaks up. "And you know me as Sophia."

We nod before looking out towards our sail boats.

"I guess we should start and get on them before our Coach joins us," I say.

The others nod in agreement, and we find our boats.

I head to mine that has a light blue streak throughout the side, setting it aside from the other sailboats. 31617.

I get on my boat and untie it from the dock, checking once more that the sail and everything else is set before heading off, feeling the breeze through my hair and the smell of the ocean luring me farther.

Zora~

I hop out of the minivan and run to the building. Ah,how I love freedom. Sweet freedom from loud voices and annoying younger brothers. Freedom from yelling "SHUT UP!" At the top of my lungs. Freedom.

One of the coach-looking people calls us toward the red-roofed building. I plop down on the floor before realizing that there are ten perfectly good chairs right in front of me. I smack my forehead and plop down in the stripy red and white one.

It takes a while for the coaches to start talking, which is fine by me. I can get a good look around at everybody else. There are four boys and six girls and two of the girls seem to be close friends.

My thoughts are cut off by one of the coaches pointing at a girl with curly brown hair and turquoise eyes. "Ocean Kelly," she says, and seems relieved when the coaches point to the next person, who turns out to be "Assan Burke".

"Kaila Fenborough." Says the girl who I think is friends with Ocean.

"Sophia Chavez."

"Logan Miraz."

"Hugo Roux."

When the coach- Alex- points at me, I look around just to make sure that he is indeed pointing at moi. What is wrong with me? "Zora Yasmin Myers." I say, making the Yasmin quieter than the rest.

Ethan Bannister, Lilah Kreuzakamp, and Iris Mircah declare their names, and then the coach begins talking again.

"Today we'll split into groups by experience," Coach Alex declares,
louder than all of us combined. "One group with each coach. My group is
Lilah, Ethan, and Logan. Luke's group is Ocean, Kaila, Sophia, and Zora.
Luna's group is Assan, Hugo, and Iris. Any questions?"

I shake my head.

"I'm sure from intros you already know," Kaila begins, facing me and Sophia. "But I'm Kaila."

"And I'm Ocean," The next girl says with a smile.

"Zora," I say, laughing.. "And don't say Yasmin if you value your life."

We all laugh before Sophia speaks up. "And you know me as Sophia."

We nod before looking out towards our sail boats. "I guess we should start and get on them before our Coach joins us." Ocean says. We all nod again.

I head for my sailboat, which has an orange flower by the prow I finish tying the sail and its ropes, and then I'm sailing. I pop a piece of saltwater taffy into my mouth and sigh.

Great parts! Maybe some of them know each other a bit better, like if they've been on the sailing team before, or just because it's such a small town? You don't have to change what you've written, but something to take into consideration for future.

Hey! I don't know a THING about sailing. I live in rural SC and can spout out all sorts of facts about crop rotation, tell you common goat habits, and give you all sorts of random trivia about donkeys, cows, chickens—you name it! That you never wanted to know. However, I haven't even been on a sailboat before!  I figured this would be a good chance to learn. Isn't it awesome how we can learn about new things just by writing and reading????? But all this to say, I'll do my research and keep up with the story and all, but this is exactly the problem I had with the Steampunk RP almost 2 years ago: I don't know the subject. Therefore, ummmm...expect embarrassing mistakes.

Are the separate groups are divided into boats together,? Or do we each have separate sailboats? I'm guessing separate sailboats from Alice's post.  Sorry, this will be kind of short and a bit bland because my brain is kind of deadish today.

Assan~

I'm hopelessly lost as soon as I step up to the sailboat. Or maybe I was hopelessly lost as soon as Mum dropped me off at the sailing club.

Taking a deep breath, I chant so softly that only the fresh ocean breeze can hear:

"All day I hear the noise of waters

making moan."

Okay, I can do this. And I'm not going to fail embarrassingly this time.

I look at the rope tying the boat to the dock.

Then I look at the visible parts of the sailboat, rocking gently on the water.

Rope.

Boat.

Rope.

Boat.

So...I untie it? Most of the other kids seem to know what to do, and the instructors walk around giving pointers to those who don't. The coach for our group, what was her name...Luna? Hasn't appeared yet. One boy, who must be Hugo, walks up to the boat next to mine. I debate asking for help, but he shoots me a strange glare that I can't really decipher, so that's out. Turning to the sailboat on the other side of mine, I can see Iris getting ready to push off. Ask her? Don't ask her.

"Sad as the seabird when,

going forth alone..."

"Hey...umm...you're Iris, right?" She looks up.

"He hears the wind's cry to the water's monotone."

"I'm sorry, but I haven't really done a lot of sailing before, can you tell me where to start?" She laughs a little, although it seems more of an extant of friendship than mockery.

"The grey winds, the cold winds are blowing

where I go."

Quoted poem fragments from All Day I Hear the Noise of Waters by James Joyce. Punctuations and line breaks are all the same as in the original, except the "..." after alone which I added in to show that the thought is unfinished.

Iris~

I walk down the long dock, and see boats that are pretty much hopelessly entangled. It must be all the ropes attached to the boats. I reach mine and start untying it, and am abou to push off when I hear a voice beside me.

"Hey....um... You're Iris, right?"

I look up to see that kid Assan, whose name I know from introductions.

"I'm sorry, but I haven't really done a lot of sailing before, so can you tell me where to start?" he asks

I laugh awkwardly. "Well, you see, I am NOT the person to ask. I haven't really done much sailing before either, so I guess we can figure it out together?" I say.  Coach Luna walks by. I'm saved!

"Excuse me, Coach Luna?" I ask.

She turns around. "What is it?"

"Um... What are we supposed to do first?"

"Untie your boats, then sail away from the dock. I'll anchor my motorboat right on the far side of that breakwater, and I'll tell you what we're doing then, okay?"

"Okay," we reply.

I jump into my boat and push off the dock. Grabbing the tiller and the sheet, I sit in the position I think I should be in. I let the sail out half way, and pretty soon, I'm flying.

I'll post, but I'm using the family computer so it can't be very long.

Sophia~ The other three girls in my group, Zora, Ocean and Kaila turn to me and Kaila says   "I'm sure from intros you already know, but I'm Kaila."

"And I'm Ocean," Ocean states

"Zora," Zora laughs. "And don't say Yasmin if you value your life."

Everyone laughs and then i say "And you know me as Sophia."

There is a pause then we all break to find our boats. Mine is pretty plain but it has the numbers 18130 on the side in peeling green paint. I take a quick breath of the air then untie the rope that keeps it from drifting away and climb abord. I try to boost my confidence by thinking "Whats the worst that could happen?" Then reality sinks in. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Assan~

Luna gives us a few basic instructions before starting up her motorboat. After a few minutes of embarrased fumbling and several mistakes, I tenatively push off into the water. Iris and I sail at about the same pace. Looking down, I can see the waves rocking gently against the hull of the boat. This is amazing!

"All right everyone," Luna calls as she circles around our group. "Let's head out that way!" She points to a slightly hazy spot on the horizen. I quickly gather up the courage to talk to Iris again. It doesn't take much, because the feeling of moving through the water (even though I'm going in all sorts of awkward, jerky, directions) is completely exilerating.

"What's over there?" I yell over the fading sound of Luna's motorboat. Iris shrugs.

"No idea."

Hey, I'm so sorry I haven't posted yet before today! Bike camp was really fun and I was going through so post-camp withdrawal. I really miss all the guys (there was only one other girl, and 10 boys!). At least I got to spend time texting with one of them, who I connnected with particularly well because of a really funny late Nate encounter. Anywho, here goes... I'm going to skip the intro because I'm already too far behind.

Kaila~

Through most of the camp introductions, I mostly just daydreamed about who knows what. I'm startled back to the present when we start going around saying our names.

"Kaila Fenborough," I say, a beat too late.

As names are finished, our coach, Luna, directs us outside. A few minutes later, we are sailing for the most part smoothly on the open water. Or at least, as smoothly as a bunch of teenagers that don't know what they're doing could be going. We angle our sailboats towards a break in the horizon that must be an island.

An hour later, we draw near enough to the island to see that there are rocks in the water surrounding it, making things extremely difficult in the way of navigating around them. Especially for a bunch of beginners.

"Alright guys," Luna calls out," Let's double back home now. I didn't realize how dangerous the water around this island is and I don't want anyone getting hurt. We're not coming back to this place again."

Around me, groans if disappointment ring out.

Pfft. I think to myself. Screw the rules. I'll be back here soon enough, and whoevers brave enough is free to join.

I personally know nothing about sailing, so at this point, looking back, it was probably a bad idea to make a character who knows what he's doing.

~Logan

After the introductions, we all headed out to the boats. I was in a group with Lilah and Ethan, so I quickly untied my boat, forest green with dark blue paint splatters on the bow. I eased the sheet so the wind carried me out, and felt my grandfather's hand on my shoulder, guiding the line. I smiled, and sped after the others. I sailed in between Lilah and Ethan, and Coach Alex came up behind us.

"Hey!" he called. "See that spot on the horizon, where Luna's group is heading?" He gestured to the three boats sailing out, following a white motorboat. "Rumor has it there's an island out there, an uncharted one."

"Really? I've never heard that." Said Lilah.

"Well, now's your chance to find out!" I resist a smile. I was sure there was no island, but it meant more sailing for me! I tugged the sheet, spedding ahead.

"Come on!" I called over my shoulder. "What's the worst that could happen?"
