New Roleplay

There are plenty of RRs but the roleplays have sort of died out. This isn't my best work, but anyhow...

Maligna von Crew stared through the mist surrounding her house, a rather intimidating black stone affair that was known by the locals as the Marsh House. The von Crew Manor, actually, Maligna would always think, but no one remembered her name anymore.

She could sense someone approaching- two people, actually, but one was so young that she hardly counted him or her. The new apprentice, perhaps, Maligna thought, and a parent. She'd requested an apprentice a week or so ago, asking the village pressman to put an ad in the next newspaper- if one could call it that; it was little more than some bound paper detailing gossip.

She hadn't specified her trade, but she hardly thought it necessary. Nothing she could say would convince the villagers that she wasn't a witch.

Well, technically I suppose I could be a witch, she thought as she stoked the fire in her living room hearth. Not a good witch, as they say, but not terribly evil either... She was so deep in her thoughts that she hardly heard the rap at her front door. But she did, and stood up to answer it.

Selrissal Moqbearn and her mother approached the door of the Marsh House nervously. It was so... formiddable. Selry had expected something much more cheerful and welcoming. Why on earth did Miss Von Crew get a black house? Black was for mourning. It wasn't the right colour for a house, especially when no one in town had died for an entire year. All the other houses were fiery red right then. And there were no windows. That wasn't right either. Selry supposed that some spellls would have to be kept secret, but why not get curtains? Selry didn't understand. O well. she thought. I'm going to be Miss Von Crew's apprentice! I can learn magic! And, heart beating much faster than usual, she opened the rang the doorbell.

Is that alright?

((Yes, that's quite good.))

Maligna opened the door to reveal a young girl and a woman who was presumably her mother, both looking rather awestricken. Pff, she thought, and I'd hoped it was the apprentice.

"Haucan mui asselt yeruo?" Her cloudy hazel eyes danced over the two people on her doorstep. Critically eyeing them, she noted that their skin was a bit paler than the usual hue of the villagers- perhaps they were foreigners, looking for directions? Surely no townsperson would willingly approach her home.

"Pardon?" They looked confused.

Cursing herself inwardly, Maligna realized that in all the solitude she'd begun using the ancient tongue again. Nonsensical old woman, she thought, despite the fact that she was not nearly as old or nonsensical as many thought her. "That is, how can I help you?"

The elder of the two spoke. "My husband and I have eight children, and twins coming- it is many mouths to feed for a poor family. We-"

Perhaps they are villagefolk, Maligna thought, idiots that they seem.

"I'm sorry," she said a bit irritably, "I don't conjure up wealth or save livlihoods... you'll need a jinn for that, I'm afraid. Good evening, then."

The girl stopped the door by extending her foot and said, looking Maligna straight in the eye, "What my mother means is not to implore charity. She would like to apprentice me to you."

"You? You're the new apprentice I was getting?" Miss Von Crew said, looking at Selry more closely with her shrewd black eyes. Selry could tell that this was not what Miss Von Crew had been expecting.

Selry nodded. "If you'll let me be," she added, hoping against hope that that would be the case.

Kalliope Coralie Valentine valued her name far more than her ability to do magic. She had descended from a long line of wizards, enchanters, and enchantresses; and had highly developed gifts when magic was involved. Thus being, she never gave her gifts much thought. Until an apprentice came to Maligna von Crew's door. Kalliope schemed, in her horribly wretched mind about finding an apprentice of her own. She soon brushed the thought away, however, when she remembered that as well as being almost invincible, she was no where near dying. She cast a sidelong glance at the mirror hanging in the hallway. Wide, innocent green eyes, a straight, roman nose, and red, rosebud lips stared back at her; all framed by a swirling mass of frothing black hair that could have been spun from a raven pristine feathers (Agh! Run-on sentance!) Come to think of it, her eyes resembled gracefully smoothed sea glass. and her lips were the color of roses; and the flush that rose in her cheeks when she was embarressed could have been taken straight from a summer sunset. Kalliope could have been procured straight from the earth itself. Because she was.

I'm extrememly sorry that you all had to witness that. I've had a headache all day, so my writing is terrible. Please excuse this. I have attempted to make it as bearable as possible. :D

((You think that was bad? What's your writing like when it's GOOD? That was terrific!

Mine, on the other hand... I'm reading my previous two posts over, and I must have been sick or depressed these last couple days without my knowing it... because that stuff is really awful.))

((What? Your writing is amazing, Mary W!!!!! You're one of the best authors that I know!!!! Get your mind out of the gutter, child! It is a sad, sad day when an author insults their own work (dang, it. I did that, too (Bad Koffee)) We must rise to the occassion and fight together!!!! Wunderkind unite!!!)) :D:D:D

I think both of your writing was really good (better than mine, anyway - oops, didn't mean to insult myself, sorry)!!! Just out of curiousity, what are wunderkind? I can tell it's a German word, and it has something to do with children, but that's about all...

Wunder means wonder. A wunderkind would be a remarkable wonder child, a genius.

Letta Elbury, the housemaid, peeked out from the side of the manor; a small girl stood by her mother. It was clear that this was the new apprentice Maligna had spoken of. Jealousy surged through her as she regarded the girl. She had a chance to become powerful, mystic, to learn magic, for heavens sakes, so why was she just standing there?

Unable to bear it much longer, Letta ran inside. She wanted nothing but to be apprenticed to a magic-weilder, but Maligna took no notice of her. Maligna rated her lower than even the villiagers, it seemed. Tears ran down her face as she thought of how Maligna had chosen this- this girl. She had had enough.

((I know it's not very good, but I can't help that now.))

((@ Ella: It was great! I think we all need to stop insulting our own writing - all of us!))

Suddenly, a young woman ran into the manor, crying.

"What's wrong?" Selry asked. "And who are you?"

"What's wrong?" the woman replied in a mocking tone. "What's wrong? As if you wouldn't know! I'm sure Mistress Von Crew's told you all about how lazy I am, and how low down! She doesn't think I'm fit for anything but cleaning, cooking, and more cleaning! And you!" she shouted, wagging a finger at Selry. "You come along and become her apprentice! Imagine, a mere village girl accomplishing what I've been trying to do for years!" At this, the woman made an odd noise that could have been a sob or a laugh, it was difficult to tell.

"Who is this woman?" Selry asked, looking at Maligna.

"As if you don't know who I am!" the woman retorted bitterly. "Don't try to pretend. You know I'm Lydda the housemaid! Although who knows? Mayhaps Maligna won't even find me suitable for that much longer," she said, with an angry glance at the witch.
