Installment 2

The hands of the clock in Rory Lapin’s seventh period science class seemed to be moving three times slower than usual. As she listened to her teacher drone on and on about bacteria, her mind was in the drama room, trying to picture every detail, from the late afternoon sunlight slanting in through the high windows to the battered piano in the corner and the rows of rickety folding chairs. Just as she had a clear image in her head and the science teacher reached a particularly boring bit about different types of fungi, the 3:00 bell rang. All traces of boredom and sleepiness gone, Rory practically leapt out of her chair and gathered up all her things. She skipped out of the classroom and up the stairs to the drama room itself, where she spent the next three-quarters of an hour stretched out on the ground, staring up at the ceiling and listening to Les Mis. She had just started crying over one of the songs, when the door opened and in stepped Lily and Maddie.

“OMG, are you okay?” said Lily, looking concernedly at the tears running down Rory’s flushed face.

“I’m fine, thanks,” replied Rory, sheepishly wiping her face. “It’s just Eponine’s Death.”

“Ah!” said Maddie, realization dawning on her. “All the best characters in Les Mis die. It’s so-”

But the rest never found out exactly what it was, because at that minute, the door opened for a third time. Quinn Barkley walked into the room, and, managing to find a Kleenex scrap in her pocket, sat down next to Maddie and started furiously studying her lines.

One by one, in walked Taylor Reed, Timothy Yu, and Eila Woodworth, each clutching a newly marked script and the latter glancing at Rory’s tear-stained cheeks and pausing to exclaim, “Have you been listening to Les Mis again, Rory?” before sitting down next to her friend.

The rest of the cast slowly trickled into the room. Olivia Ewilen, Emmeline Kelly, Kathlyn Rogers, Austin Radelerz (who stopped to flash a dazzling smile in Eila’s direction before taking his seat), Aliyah Carlson, and Laura Michaels.

Once more, the door flew open and their director, Miss Lisa Bowman, flanked by the Polish Kaminski siblings, stood on the threshold. She was a short yet somehow intimidating woman, and the sight caused Emmeline to emit a meek squeal, then blush profusely when she found the cast staring at her.

Pretending not to notice the sound, Miss Bowman strode confidently to the center of the room and began an enthusiastic speech.

“Hello, actors! For those of you that are new, I’m Miss Bowman, or Miss B if you prefer. I run the drama program here at RMS. Today we will run through all of the songs in the show, from the top. Tech crew, see Anelia as soon as I’m done speaking.” (The redheaded Kaminski girl, who was probably around 17, waved and smiled) “And I think that’s about it for now!”

The cast split into their respective groups, and soon Eila’s clear, sweet mezzo-soprano voice dueting with Timothy’s tenor and Lily’s soprano filled the room, punctuated with occasional bursts of laughter from the tech crew corner.

During a break between songs, Miss B. surveyed the scene, from the actors in front of the piano fumbling with their scripts to find the right page, to the ones sitting in the rows, silently mouthing their lines, to the table in the corner, where Peter, Anelia, and Rory were deep in a conversation about set building.

She could tell already that this would be a great show.

Hope you guys enjoyed! Installment 3 will be up… when? Well, I have voice tomorrow, plus studying for two quizzes, so… Thursday. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this chapter, and Spring, if you still want to draw, the charries, that would be awesome.

Bye guys!
