NaNoWriMo.

Having heard good things (very good things along the lines of "NaNo tore out my soul, melted my brain, and broke my left thumb") about NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth, I skimmed a few older threads on the subject and then checked out the NaNo site. Very very extensively. Then with my mother's permission I signed up. It looks very interesting. I'm pretty sure there are at least two other people on here who do it...

Anyway, I'm practicing the "procrastinating" part for November by making random posts on Cricket instead of finishing my summer homework... the middle school teachers will just adore me, I'm sure.

Woohoo! I won't be alone! (74 days till Triple Aces...)

I think this year I'm going to outline vaguely in the form of "I think this is what's going to happen in this chapter" and steal the characters from the "So, um, did..." thread that has pretty much died because I don't know what's going to happen next. Which should be interesting, to say the least, especially given that several of my little chapter synopsis thingies are along the lines of "figure it out" or "avoid plot holes" and "will require some thought".

What're you doing?

Query: don't you have to be at least 13 years old? I looked at the site and that's what it said. Mary Liz, how did you get around that?? Because I am very interested in joining. Does it count if I will be turning 13 in the month itself? (I mean November, of course))

I'd count it, personally.

The age limit is a legal thing. I wouldn't worry about it so long as your parents are cool with you signing up for the regular site.

@ Clair: You're incredibly lucky. Incredibly. Lucky.

@ TNO (umlaut): I only have the most general idea... but I think that I'm going to use the character I made up for Megan's roleplay (Helena d'Mario) but not the rp's storyline (well, obviously) and then go from there. Other than that, I have no idea for the plot whatsoever.

Ah, but who needs a plot? All you need is a deadline and lots of caffeine/sugar. The dares thread is a good thing if you need a plot bunny (though it tends to be a bit raunchy...).

Also you should search me (it's just TNÖ) and add me as a buddy. *nodnod* Unless you're on the YWP...?

The writing co-op I'm in does a variation - WINNoWriMo, WINN being Writer's Institute of Northern Nevada, the co-op. The difference is that only the oldest kids and the parents who do it have to do the full fifty thou words - last year I, being in ninth grade, had to write only thirty-five thou. A lot easier. My book stinks, of course, but it's done. :D This year it'll be a lot harder - I might do the full fifty thou. Anywho, I hope you make it and have fun, Mary!

Do the whole 50k! It's only 1,667 words a day! DO EET! DO EET!

Being insane helps. A lot.

No, I'm definitely not on YWP. I have a terrible grudge against anything specifically for young children/simplified/abridged. That should explain my inborn hatred of GIC.

Regarding caffeine: Yes, I was reading everything, and they mentioned caffeine quite a bit... I don't drink soda or coffee or anything and was sort of like, Wait, is this a requirement? Then I remembered chocolate has caffeine, which basically solved all my problems. ;)

Two questions. A) how do you search names? and b) which forum is the dare thread on? ...It's a massive site. I was very overwhelmed.

Re: simplification: The only difference, really, between NaNo and YWP is that in YWP you can change your word count goal. I think they do that to keep from putting off younger kids who want to write a novel but are scared away by the 50k goal. Also because the NaNo forums can get pretty crass.

Also, this: "Especially common among shows intended for children. Kids can legitimately be said to be less knowledgeable than adults, though we all probably know a depressingly large number of exceptions, but this leads to shows that are condescending and didactic." (from the TV Tropes "Viewers are Morons" entry.)

Re: searching users: Click the "Authors" tab on the menu (it's between About and My NaNoWriMo) and at the top of the page there's a search box that you can use to search for users.

As to the dares thread, I usually find it by googling "NaNoWriMo dares" and clicking NaNoWriMo links. *shrug* The forums are basically impossible to navigate unless you know exactly where you're going.

Heeheehee! Well I guess you're set, TNO (umlaut). You're plenty insane! :D :D But then, I'm quite insane myself. Hmmm. Not really remembering the point of this post......... Oh, yes! Clair. You're SSSSSOOOOOOOOO lucky! I don't have too much summer homework, but it's on my 2nd least favorite subject. Blech! 14 pages! Just because I'm starting Algebra 1 (which, at my school, is technically 9th grade math). Blech! *sigh* Well, that's all.

Actually, I know all about how much being insane helps - I am. I try to disguise it around other people, but every now and then my true nature slips through. (Random fact: did you know that Ben Franklin in Alas, Babylon drinks a quart of milk a day?) I will try the full 50 thou next time, and I will make it, too. The quality will be about that of the water left over when a herd of elephants has camped in a water hole for a week, but it will exist. (My very similies show my insanity, for goodness sake. :D)

Depends. With the YWP you can change your wordcount goal, and it's less vulgar. On the other hand, if you sign up on the regular website I can buddy you.
